Thread Box:
The Passage of a Few People Through a Rather Brief Moment in Time: Thread Number Four
Thread started by theroyalacademy at 09.13.14 - 6:28 pm

One or more persons during a certain period drop their usual motives for movement and action, their relations, their work and leisure activities, and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the encounters they find there.

It's a bike ride.
Started by user nathansnider and user theroyalacademy.

It meets every Wednesday at 8:30pm
at California Donuts #21.
We ride at 9pm.
We sometimes get back pretty late.

This is the discussion thread for as of 13 September, 2014.
The older threads all got too long.
This thread is nice and short (for now).
And, even though I have nothing new to post today, I have been meaning to make a new thread for a while. So here it is. A new, short thread.

If you would like to see the old, long threads, go:
here
or
back here
or
way back here.
But please don't post to those threads anymore.
Consider them "archival."
Post here.
Only here.
Please.
Thanks.

Alright! Let's see if we can break this thing in... by, uh, posting the route from last week? Yeah, that'll do:

And here are some links about how the LA County Poor Farm/Rancho Los Amigos came to be, some of the history and sordid bits, and the even more sordid bits about the place. Sadly, there don't seem to be any photos of what the farm looked like while it was in operation, but there are a few photos of what the south campus buildings look like inside today: here and here.

Hi. Yeah, you should be fine tonight. Nothing too crazy. Just be prepared for a (downhill) road that gets a bit gravelly. Depending on your comfort level with that, at worst, you might end up walking a bit.

Yes, we're exiting at Acton.

I think you'll be safe getting on in Sylmar. I've never seen the Metrolink fill up with bikes (I mean, maybe it would fill up on Ciclavia?). So I found out that my bike will take a 32c tire in the front . I tired it on m rear and it fits there also. On recommendation I bought a Vittoria Randonneur II Tire 700x32. Now it is time to purchase a second tire. Any suggestion? Do you like the gatorskin better? I was thinking of just getting the same to have a match. Never rode on such fat tires on a road bike. 25 is the largest.

Hells yeah, fatter the better. I've rode the randoneur (sic) tire myself and loved it. Get a match set! If you want flat protection, I think the armadillos are better than the gatorskin, better sidewalls.

Left Chinatown, S.F. on the 10th, cycling home. Weather and scenery spectacular, just a few minutes of sprinkles, which was kind of refreshing. Favorite sections have been the coastal bike paths around Half Moon Bay, rolling up to the Santa Cruz wharf amid sparkling sunshine and beach scents, being gifted a carton of strawberries at a massive strawberry farm near Castroville, 17 Mile Drive near Carmel, and coasting 2600’ down Nancimiento-Ferguson Road from the coastal range to SR-1 at Lucia. Right now in Morro Bay, enjoying a day off. Met a Frenchman who’s been cycling the world for 3 years. Next stops Orcutt, Solvang, Santa Barbara. Here’s a shot from Nancimiento-Ferguson Road, peering down towards SR-1 after descending through clouds.

Thanks to everyone that sprawled out with us last night! This was our route (lighter line is the Gold Line; darker was riding):

Also, my assertion that San Gabriel Village might've been along a Red Car route was a bit of a Roger Rabbit moment, as far as historical accuracy goes, unfortunately. Not at all the case (they ran nearby along Huntington Dr., Las Tunas, and the current alignment of the 10). Tried to quickly dig up some historical info on the San Gabriel Village neighborhood and came up empty. Anyone else able to shed some light?

Solo cycled some rural areas of northern Thailand last week, it was excellent. Most of the bigger roads have wide shoulders that are mostly used by motorbikes but cyclists fit right in, and when Thai drivers pass they allow plenty of space. Found lots of scenic back roads that were nearly empty of cars. Bought a cheap Samsung mobile and Google Maps kept me on the right track.

OK, that is the image I tried to post last week. Thanks Nathan for explaining image coding for this site. Other stretches were far more scenic -- I was having too much fun to stop for photos but that’s what a typical little road in northern Thailand looks like.

In Chiang Mai I did an easy 25KM route with the Sunday Cycling Club. They do a very relaxed pace compared to Passage, or nearly any other Stateside group. Mid ride we stopped at a park for an hour to observe ferns, then rode 10 minutes and did a 1 hour lunch stop. This ride was more social than cycling, though they do more ambitions rides, and some with a historical theme. They didn’t run any red lights at all. Hopefully the photo will also display...

Not Thai-related, but check out this Backwards Brain Bicycle — the handlebars turn backwards. The guy who made the video spent 8 months learning to ride it but after he finally succeeded, he fell down every time he tried to ride a normal bike. I thought the video was hilarious but he also draws some interesting conclusions about how subconscious biases make it harder to learn. Smarter Every Day has a whole series of amazing stuff on science and nature.

"I read a study that measured the efficiency of locomotion for various species. The condor used the least energy to move a kilometer. Humans came in with a rather unimpressive showing about a third of the way down the list … But then someone at Scientific American had the insight to test the efficiency of locomotion for a man on a bicycle. And a man on a bicycle blew the condor away."

Last night several of us puzzled over all the loud jets passing over the park, at what seemed like a fairly low altitude. I was curious and did a little research. All those flights were incoming from the north and the west, making their final U turn before joining the westbound glide path down into LAX. I read that they increase power while making the turn and I think they are typically at 3000 feet or less, so from the park at about 420 feet, they are not very far overhead. I marked this flight path image to show the location of the park. If this works.

Hey, everybody, just thought I'd acknowledge that we're obviously not really posting each week's ride here any more. There was never any discussion or decision; it just sorta stopped happening. We held out longer than most, but it just really does feel a bit, let's say, "quiet" around here these days and the extra effort has not felt worth it lately.

But we're still doing the ride each week. And you can find out about upcoming ones by joining our mailing list, here:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/the-passage-announcements

(Indeed, you don't even have to join the list; you can simply view each week's post at that link.)

And maybe at some point we'll take the time to post here again too. Who knows? We are predictably unpredictable.

Ride on!

For anyone who's not on the mailing list or otherwise missed the announcement:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/the-passage-announcements/bsqntJZw4Uo

There's no Passage tonight, no Passage next Wednesday (that one is on Saturday instead) and after next June, no more Passage. We're letting y'all know now in case you've been wanting to make it out on the ride (whether for the first time or just more often).

25 rides to go!
