The Passage of a Few People Through a Rather Brief Moment in Time #300 - Divine Rods

05.23.15

One or more persons during a certain period drop their usual motives
for movement and action, their relations, their work and leisure activities,
and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the
encounters they find there.

It's a bike ride.

Started by user nathansnider and user theroyalacademy.

It meets every Wednesday at 8:30pm
at California Donuts #21.
We ride at 9pm.
We endeavor to return before the last red line trains (around midnight),
but it is generally not possible. Please plan accordingly.

This week we meet at California Donuts #21
on Saturday morning,
departing promptly at 9am

On this bike ride, you might expect:
- inconvenient passageways
- oblique strategies
- Oulipian constraints
- disorientation
- reorientation
- "cover" versions of other people's rides, performed with amateurish enthusiasm
- amateurish enthusiasm
- pool halls
- bowling alleys
- karaoke
- geocaching
- full moon picnics
- traffic median tea parties
- rivers that no longer exist
- smell tourism
- Couchwick v2.0

Furthermore:
- usually 20-35 miles
- usually some hills
- a medium pace (probably not for beginners; certainly not a hustle)
- few stops, short stops
- but we're not in a rush; we don't need to run every light
- victory donuts!

This week:

Divine Rods

For our 100th route, we rode a century, 100 miles.

That made sense.

When #200 rolled around, people asked if we were going to do 200 miles. Haha.
No. That’s too much riding all at once. Especially the way we do it, with the
inconvenience and whatnot. So we did a series of weekend rides to celebrate 200.

Well, here we are at 300 and no one has wondered if we’re going to ride 300 miles.
Because, well, that is just sort of outside the limits of sanity, right? (If you ask us,
200 miles in one shot is outside those same limits, but…).

There was, however, a nice symmetry to the whole 100 rides/100 miles thing.
Wouldn’t it be nice if there was something we could tackle that would be 300 of
something? Thus, many hours were spent sitting around the conference table at
Passage HQ, deep in thought and discussion, trying to devise the perfect route
to commemorate 300 rides, something that would be both monumental and
numerically significant.

Or, actually, that didn’t happen at all. And there is no conference table. Nor
Passage HQ. But there was an idea: Maybe we should finally do a ride up
Mt. Wilson? We’ve been casually discussing it for years and it seems like an idea
whose time has come.

And, as a bonus, we can post-rationalize it as roughly (VERY roughly) 300 rods
in prominence!

Okay, okay, it doesn’t have quite the symmetry of #100 (rods are, after all,
generally a measure of distance, not elevation), but we promise it will be fun.
If your idea of fun is climbing a big mountain. Off-road. Because – unlike 200
miles in a day – that is OUR idea of fun. And, while the way up will be fairly direct
(though not uneventful), the way down will meander and explore and do as much
of all we normally do as necessary (and more!), given the constraints of time
and legs.

So, the details:

- As stated above, we will depart California Donuts at 9am (in the morning)
- Since this ride is more about the rods up than the miles out, we will catch the
Metro shortly thereafter (please come with a valid Metro card already in hand,
with at least $1.75 on it, so we don’t have to wait for everyone to buy one)
- We will arrive at Allen Station at approximately 10–10:15am (feel free to meet
us at Allen, but be on time – we won’t be waiting there)
- We’ll climb a big hill (er, mountain)
- Afterwards, we’ll either ride back to the donut shop or hop back on Metro,
as time/legs warrant

- The route length is indeed variable; ~50 miles if we ride back to the donut shop
- There is over 5,000 ft of climbing
- There is over 5,000 ft of climbing
- Much of it is off-road, including some rough parts, both up- and downhill.
- You will want, at minimum, a cross/touring bike with thick tires; a mountain
bike is recommended (road bikes are probably not suitable; forget about
fixed/single-speed)
- Please make sure your bike is in good, working order beforehand and bring
spare tubes that are the proper size, in case of flats
- There may be some short hiking sections

- We’ll eat lunch at the top. There is a restaurant, but you should bring snacks
for the way up as it might take us all a while to get up there, depending on
everyone’s fitness.
- Bring plenty of water (at very least 2 bottles, probably more)
- Bring sunscreen
- Bring extra layers of clothing as it may be quite cool at the top
- Bring lights, just in case we end up out after dark (not expected, but possible)
