The Passage of a Few People Through a Rather Brief Moment in Time #323 - P+7

10.28.15

One or more persons during a certain period drop their usual motives
for movement and action, their relations, their work and leisure activities,
and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the
encounters they find there.

It's a bike ride.

Started by user nathansnider and user theroyalacademy.

It meets every Wednesday at 8:30pm
at California Donuts #21.
We ride at 9pm.
While we endeavor to return before the last red line trains (around midnight),
it is generally not possible. Please plan accordingly.

On this bike ride, you might expect:
- inconvenient passageways
- oblique strategies
- Oulipian constraints
- disorientation
- reorientation
- "cover" versions of other people's rides, performed with amateurish enthusiasm
- amateurish enthusiasm
- playgrounds, pool halls, bowling alleys, karaoke
- geocaching
- full moon picnics
- traffic median tea parties
- rivers that no longer exist
- smell tourism
- Couchwick v2.0

Furthermore:
- usually 20-35 miles
- usually some hills
- a medium pace (probably not for beginners; certainly not a hustle)
- few stops, short stops
- but we're not in a rush; we don't need to run every light
- victory donuts!

This week:

P+7

Often our routes can seem a bit arbitrary. Why this way and not another? Why now and not last week or next? So sometimes we need to look to external signposts and events for guidance, to align our wanderings with the larger cycles of the universe. This week, for example, we find the ride falls within close proximity to one of our favorite fall holidays. And so who are we not to celebrate?

But, okay, since said holiday does not actually fall on a Wednesday this year, it seems necessary to recalibrate a bit. So we will be applying an Oulipian constraint to shift our cycling ever so slightly back into alignment with those universal cycles. It is all very mathematical and precise, we assure you.

So, without further ado, happy October 27th, everybody!

(~25-30 miles; mostly flat)

+++ ALSO +++

Please note: there will be NO RIDE NEXT WEDNESDAY. Next week’s ride will be on Saturday, November 7th.

Because:

Remember how we’ve done some weekend rides each of the past couple years? Fun, right? Well, we’re doing it again this fall/winter. And since it worked out relatively well the way we did it last year, that’s how we’ll be doing it again this one. To wit: for the next four months, we’ll be skipping the first Wednesday of each month and, instead, riding the following Saturdays. That means there will NOT be rides on 11/4, 12/2, 1/6, or 2/3, but there WILL be daytime rides instead on 11/7, 12/5, 1/9, 2/6.

The thing that will be different this year is that we won’t always be meeting at Union Station and taking Metrolink trains. Sometimes we will, but sometimes regular old Metro will suffice to get us out to where we need to go. But, don’t worry, we’ll still be going places we haven’t gone before, doing rides that are probably a little longer and/or more ambitious than what we can normally do on a Wednesday evening. Honestly, we’re still figuring out what exactly the plan is, but we’re sure it will be an adventure (or, rather, four).

Stay tuned for more information!
