The Passage of a Few People Through a Rather Brief Moment in Time #284: Let the Eagle Soar
01.28.15
One or more persons during a certain period drop their usual motives for movement and action, their relations,
their work and leisure activities, and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the
encounters they find there.
It's a bike ride.
Started by user nathansnider and user theroyalacademy.
It meets every Wednesday at 8:30pm at California Donuts #21.
We ride at 9pm.
On the sixth year of this bike ride, you might expect:
- more inconvenient passageways
- more full moon picnics
- perhaps more "cover" versions of other people's rides, performed with amateurish enthusiasm
- certainly more amateurish enthusiasm
- disorientation
- reorientation
- pool halls
- bowling alleys
- dance parties
- karaoke
- imaginary histories
- scavenging for fun and sustenance
- more geocaching
- more oblique strategies
- more Oulipian constraints
- traffic median tea parties
Furthermore:
- A medium pace (maybe not for beginners; certainly not a hustle)
- We're not in a rush; we don't need to run every light.
- Maybe some distance;maybe some hills
- Victory donuts!

This week:
Let the Eagle Soar
So maybe you are just trying to entertain the crowd. Maybe you are hoping to branch out a bit creatively,
standing up there on stage, offering your musical creation to a captive audience under unflattering lights.
Maybe you even achieve a certain kind of sweaty grace, but then maybe, well, maybe you don't. You know they will clap, of course, but are they clapping because
they liked your song, or are they clapping because it's finally over? That, you will never know. You know only
what you can hear with your own ears: the air conditioning, the creaking of the stage, some hushed whispers,
and then, finally, your own voice.
Now, you could do that, up there in front of the lights and the crowd and the cameras and all that, not knowing
what comes next. Nobody is stopping you. However, we firmly believe that this kind of uncertainty is best
experienced outside, at night, on bikes. The choice is yours.
(about 26 miles; kind of hilly; one short, steep-ish hike; five or six stairways; probably too much vibrato)
***ALSO: please note that there is no ride next Wednesday. We are continuing (and concluding) our series of
once-monthly, weekend daytime rides, so next week we will be meeting on Saturday morning at Union
Station.***Station.***
