The Passage of a Few People Through a Rather Brief Moment in Time #388 - Reliquaries and Rites of Way

02.4.17

One or more persons during a certain period drop their usual motives
for movement and action, their relations, their work and leisure activities,
and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the
encounters they find there.

It’s a bike ride.

Organized by user nathansnider and user theroyalacademy.

It meets every Wednesday at 8:30pm
at California Donuts #21.
We ride at 9pm.
While we endeavor to return before the last red line trains (around midnight),
it is generally not possible. Please plan accordingly.

This week we ride on Saturday. See details below.

On this bike ride, you might expect:
- inconvenient passageways
- oblique strategies
- Oulipian constraints
- disorientation
- reorientation
- “cover” versions of other people’s rides, performed with amateurish enthusiasm
- amateurish enthusiasm
- playgrounds, pool halls, bowling alleys, karaoke
- geocaching
- full moon picnics
- traffic median tea parties
- rivers that no longer exist
- smell tourism
- Couchwick v2.0

Furthermore:
- usually 20-35 miles
- usually some hills
- a medium pace (probably not for beginners; certainly not a hustle)
- few stops, short stops
- but we’re not in a rush; we don’t need to run every light
- victory donuts!

This week:

Reliquaries and Rites of Way

Meet at Union Station at 8:15am
Antelope Valley Metrolink train to Newhall departs at 8:45am
Ride ends at North Hollywood Metro station

There are many ways to approach a bike ride: as a social event or an athletic endeavor; as a political statement or an environmental act; or, sometimes, as a simple economic necessity. This week’s ride encompasses several of those, surely, but above all else we might look at it as a kind of pilgrimage.

Mind you, there is nothing particularly spiritual about the route (depending upon your theological reading of the Valley). But to be a pilgrim is more than simply to make a spiritual journey; it is also to put faith in the power of places and objects. While a far cry from the empiricist method of trusting only the observable, it does recognize the importance of presence: to form a physical relationship between oneself and a place or thing through proximity similarly creates a relationship of a different sort. One feels connected. Understanding might not yet be attained, but one is more likely to further seek it.

So this week we once again perform our rite of Passage. We visit some relics and traverse some routes. We rise above and seek perspective.

(~40-45 miles; ~1/4 off-road; one big hill and a few smaller ones)

IMPORTANT DETAILS:

- As noted above, we will be meeting on SATURDAY this week AT UNION STATION at 8:15 IN THE MORNING and catching the 8:45am Antelope Valley Metrolink train to Newhall. We’ll gather in the corridor with the ramps to the tracks and head up to the train together shortly before it departs. PLEASE BE ON TIME and purchase your ticket before you meet up with us (we will be riding to the North Hollywood Metro station, so you can buy a one-way Metrolink ticket). If you miss the train, you are out of luck!

- In the past, it has not been uncommon for many of the ticket machines to be out of order, resulting in ridiculously long queues. Do not expect to show up at the station 5 minutes before the train and be able to make it on.

- The ride is starting at the Newhall Metrolink station but is ending in North Hollywood, so if you need to drive to the start it probably is easiest to drive to Union Station and take the Metro back there at the end of the ride. (You could instead take the Metrolink to Newhall from Glendale at the end, but Metrolink schedules aren’t always super convenient.)

- Given the amount of off-roading and hills, if you have a choice, you should probably opt for a fatter-tired, lower-geared bike. There will be a few short stretches of hiking too. It looks like there is a slight chance of rain, but that should mostly be over on Friday. Nonetheless, it is not unlikely that the off-road climbing part of the ride will remain somewhat muddy on Saturday. Be prepared.

- We will stop for lunch after most of the climbing is over — probably around 1pm, likely at an In-n-Out, but there is also a grocery store and other restaurant options nearby.

- Estimated time of arrival at North Hollywood is 4-5pm.

- Bring all the things that you will need for an all-day bike ride that perhaps may extend into the twilight hours: water; lights; snacks; sunscreen; extra layers of clothing; etc.

- This is the last of our series of four once-monthly, weekend, daytime rides this fall/winter. However, as some of you know, I had planned an even more ambitious route I thought we might do this month. We’ll do that as a bonus weekend ride once the days get a bit longer and the weather more predictable.
