The Passage of a Few People Through a Rather Brief Moment in Time #375 - Grade F Book Report

10.26.16

One or more persons during a certain period drop their usual motives
for movement and action, their relations, their work and leisure activities,
and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the
encounters they find there.

It's a bike ride.

Started by user nathansnider and user theroyalacademy.

It meets every Wednesday at 8:30pm
at California Donuts #21.
We ride at 9pm.
While we endeavor to return before the last red line trains (around midnight),
it is generally not possible. Please plan accordingly.

On this bike ride, you might expect:
- inconvenient passageways
- oblique strategies
- Oulipian constraints
- disorientation
- reorientation
- "cover" versions of other people's rides, performed with amateurish enthusiasm
- amateurish enthusiasm
- playgrounds, pool halls, bowling alleys, karaoke
- geocaching
- full moon picnics
- traffic median tea parties
- rivers that no longer exist
- smell tourism
- Couchwick v2.0

Furthermore:
- usually 20-35 miles
- usually some hills
- a medium pace (probably not for beginners; certainly not a hustle)
- few stops, short stops
- but we're not in a rush; we don't need to run every light
- victory donuts!

This week:

Grade F Book Report


Like a number of our rides over the years, this week's route is based on a book. Unlike those other rides, however, we didn't actually bother to read this book*. And, though one is purportedly in production, there isn't even a film adaptation we could've watched yet. Oh well. As a book report, this route will almost certainly fail.

However, by many accounts, the premise of said book is the best part of it anyway. And we have read the premise. The ride is really more of a loose interpretation of that — more of a blurb report than a book report, you see. And, as such, we expect it to get high marks!

WINTER WEEKEND RIDES START NEXT WEEK

We will skip next Wednesday (again: no ride next Wednesday, 11/2) and, instead, ride on Saturday, 11/5.

This will be the first of our series of monthly weekend, daytime rides this November through February. Full details are forthcoming, but we typically take the Metrolink or Metro in the morning (meeting place varying from week to week depending on method of travel, but often Union Station) and ride in a location too distant for us to cover on a typical Wednesday ride. And then, depending on the location, we either hop back on the train to return or simply ride back to Koreatown. It is generally an all-day affair.

The other dates for weekend rides will be Dec. 10, Jan. 7, and Feb. 4.
