The Passage of a Few People Through a Rather Brief Moment in Time #333 - Porosity

01.9.16

One or more persons during a certain period drop their usual motives
for movement and action, their relations, their work and leisure activities,
and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the
encounters they find there.

It's a bike ride.

Started by user nathansnider and user theroyalacademy.

It meets every Wednesday at 8:30pm
at California Donuts #21.
We ride at 9pm.
While we endeavor to return before the last red line trains (around midnight),
it is generally not possible. Please plan accordingly.

This week we will meet at 8:20am on Saturday at Union Station.
See below for more details.

On this bike ride, you might expect:
- inconvenient passageways
- oblique strategies
- Oulipian constraints
- disorientation
- reorientation
- "cover" versions of other people's rides, performed with amateurish enthusiasm
- amateurish enthusiasm
- playgrounds, pool halls, bowling alleys, karaoke
- geocaching
- full moon picnics
- traffic median tea parties
- rivers that no longer exist
- smell tourism
- Couchwick v2.0

Furthermore:
- usually 20-35 miles
- usually some hills
- a medium pace (probably not for beginners; certainly not a hustle)
- few stops, short stops
- but we're not in a rush; we don't need to run every light
- victory donuts!

This week:

Porosity

Each week on The Passage, we attempt (amongst other things) to tease out the subtle gaps in the city. Unsanctioned holes in barriers, nonsensical connections, and the always popular inconvenient passageways: these are, as they say, our bread and our butter. Any city is full of such fissures and yet Los Angeles, being so big, so spread out, it seems to be especially riddled with them.

When one thinks of Orange County, however, one is more likely to think of things being a bit more controlled down there: planned communities, gated communities, decidedly non-porous communities. But, really, nothing could be further from the truth. As an exurban outgrowth of Los Angeles, Orange County is itself especially sprawling and open — a loose weave. First, with even less need to build with density, built right into the plan are a large amount of open spaces: parks and trails and so forth. But even within the more seemingly controlled, tight spaces one can find plenty of gaps: open spaces of a different sort, closed off generally not by any physical barrier but rather by their relative invisibility within the context of such environs.

For this week’s ride, then, we take advantage of those both planned and unplanned spaces (or, at least, not planned for human traffic) to travel a relatively long distance while only very rarely using a road open to car traffic. We will navigate around, between, and (weather permitting) under the controlled spaces of Orange County to find spaces of our own.

IMPORTANT DETAILS:

- As noted above, we will be meeting this week on Saturday AT UNION STATION at 8:20 IN THE MORNING. We’ll be taking the 8:50am Orange County Line Metrolink to Irvine. We'll gather in the corridor with the ramps to the tracks and head up to the train together shortly before it departs. PLEASE BE ON TIME and purchase your ticket before you meet up with us. Weekend day passes are $10. If you miss the train, you are out of luck!

- It is not uncommon for many of the ticket machines to be out of order, resulting in ridiculously long queues. Do not expect to show up at the station 5 minutes before the departure time and be able to make it onto the train.

- The ride is starting at the Irvine Metrolink station, so if you want to meet us there, our train will arrive around 9:50am. Be there on time; we will not be waiting. Also note that the ride is ending at the San Juan Capistrano station, so if you need to return to Irvine afterward, you will either need to ride there (about 15 miles), or take the Metrolink two stops back.

- The route is only 25 miles, but it is almost entirely off-road. Mostly, this will mean unpaved trails, but there are also some paved bike trails, as well as other inconvenient passageways of varying inconvenience. There will definitely be some hiking involved too.

- We will stop for lunch (bring a lock) — and likely dinner too, given that the trains back are 4 hours apart and it is almost guaranteed we will miss the earlier train (we’re really only taking the earlier morning train so we can try to beat the rain). So expect to be taking the 6pm train back, returning us to Union Station around 7:45pm. Yeah, it’s a long day.

- Bring water; bring snacks; bring sunscreen; bring extra layers of clothing. Be prepared for the possibility of rain (or at least mud from prior rain).

- This is the third of four planned once-monthly, weekend, daytime rides this fall/winter. The final ride will be on February 6.
