The Passage of a Few People Through a Rather Brief Moment in Time #381 - The Backyard’s Backyard

12.10.16

One or more persons during a certain period drop their usual motives
for movement and action, their relations, their work and leisure activities,
and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the
encounters they find there.

It’s a bike ride.

Started by user nathansnider and user theroyalacademy.

It meets every Wednesday at 8:30pm
at California Donuts #21.
We ride at 9pm.
While we endeavor to return before the last red line trains (around midnight),
it is generally not possible. Please plan accordingly.

This week we meet on Saturday morning at 8:10am at Union Station.
See full description below.

On this bike ride, you might expect:
- inconvenient passageways
- oblique strategies
- Oulipian constraints
- disorientation
- reorientation
- “cover” versions of other people’s rides, performed with amateurish enthusiasm
- amateurish enthusiasm
- playgrounds, pool halls, bowling alleys, karaoke
- geocaching
- full moon picnics
- traffic median tea parties
- rivers that no longer exist
- smell tourism
- Couchwick v2.0

Furthermore:
- usually 20-35 miles
- usually some hills
- a medium pace (probably not for beginners; certainly not a hustle)
- few stops, short stops
- but we’re not in a rush; we don’t need to run every light
- victory donuts!

This week:

The Backyard’s Backyard

The backyard holds a special place in the suburban American mythos. It is the place where balls are tossed, BBQs are held, dogs run free. It is the nuclear family’s dominion, its own green patch of Earth. If the detached, single-family house is where the American Dream lives, the backyard is where it plays.

But, in many places, behind the carefully controlled backyard of individual homes lies another, further-back yard, a wilder yard, one less maintained. While sometimes specifically designated as park land, these spaces just as often trace routes of municipal infrastructure, like drainage or gas and power lines. Here, the dreamer’s Dream becomes less programmed, less distinct, but also in a way more free.

This week, we venture out into some of those yards further afield. We travel their edges, where sturdy fences and manicured hedges mark their limits, and push also deeper, following the lines of trails and the lines of desire.

(~35-40 miles; much of it on trails; many hills)

IMPORTANT DETAILS:

- As noted above, we will be meeting on SATURDAY this week AT UNION STATION at 8:10 IN THE MORNING and catching the 8:40am Orange County Metrolink train to Irvine. We’ll gather in the corridor with the ramps to the tracks and head up to the train together shortly before it departs. PLEASE BE ON TIME and purchase your ticket before you meet up with us. Weekend day passes are $10. If you miss the train, you are out of luck!

- In the past, it has not been uncommon for many of the ticket machines to be out of order, resulting in ridiculously long queues. Do not expect to show up at the station 5 minutes before the train and be able to make it on.

- The ride is starting at the Irvine Metrolink station, so if you want to meet us there, our train will arrive around 9:45am. Be there on time; we will not be waiting. Also note that the ride is ending at the Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo Metrolink station, so if you need to return to Irvine afterward, you will either need to ride there (8.5 miles), or take the Metrolink one stop ($4.50).

- We will stop for lunch pretty early in the day (or at least to pick up food to eat later, depending on exactly how early we make it there). There’s a strip mall with many options from which we can choose as well as a grocery store. You might not need a lock unless you want to go do your own thing.

- Given the amount of off-roading and hills, if you have a choice, you should probably opt for a fatter-tired, lower-geared bike. There will be a few short stretches of hiking too.

- We will be catching the 6:19pm train from Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo, arriving back at Union Station around 8pm.

- Bring all the things that you will need for an all-day bike ride that may extend into the twilight hours: water; lights; snacks; sunscreen; extra layers of clothing; etc.

- This is the second in our series of four once-monthly, weekend, daytime rides this fall/winter. The remaining two will be on January 7 and February 4 .
