The Passage of a Few People Through a Rather Brief Moment in Time #324 - Getting Your Lines Crossed

11.7.15

One or more persons during a certain period drop their usual motives
for movement and action, their relations, their work and leisure activities,
and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the
encounters they find there.

It's a bike ride.

Started by user nathansnider and user theroyalacademy.

It meets every Wednesday at 8:30pm
at California Donuts #21.
We ride at 9pm.
While we endeavor to return before the last red line trains (around midnight),
it is generally not possible. Please plan accordingly.

This week we will meet on Saturday morning at 9am at CA Donuts
and ride at 9:30am.

See below for more details.

On this bike ride, you might expect:
- inconvenient passageways
- oblique strategies
- Oulipian constraints
- disorientation
- reorientation
- "cover" versions of other people's rides, performed with amateurish enthusiasm
- amateurish enthusiasm
- playgrounds, pool halls, bowling alleys, karaoke
- geocaching
- full moon picnics
- traffic median tea parties
- rivers that no longer exist
- smell tourism
- Couchwick v2.0

Furthermore:
- usually 20-35 miles
- usually some hills
- a medium pace (probably not for beginners; certainly not a hustle)
- few stops, short stops
- but we're not in a rush; we don't need to run every light
- victory donuts!

This week:

Getting Your Lines Crossed

To see the city as one single mass delimited by one single border, one definitive encircling line, is to see space as a political construct, as it has been officially mapped out by one power at one point in the past. But the city is more appropriately viewed as a nearly infinite series of interlocking vectors -- of people, of products, of information, of energy, of resources -- flowing in and out and amongst and around. Each bike route then, in carving out its own vector, inevitably crosses myriad others: streets, rivers, transit lines, communication lines, commuters’ routes, animals’ paths, storm drains, sewers, television transmissions, cellular phone signals, and so on. In light of this multiplicity and porosity, it becomes less important which paths we do or do not cross -- for we are constantly making crossings -- and more about which ones we choose to see, to focus upon. This week, we will direct our attention, and our route, towards the crossing (and connecting) of points on three very separate lines: one primarily hydrological, one historical, and one technological.

IMPORTANT DETAILS:

- There is no ride this Wednesday, November 4th

- As noted above, we will be meeting on SATURDAY this week, at the donut shop as usual, and LEAVING AT 9:30 IN THE MORNING. We will head to Wilshire/Vermont and take the Metro Red Line to North Hollywood Station.

- Please purchase a tap card (with at least one fare's worth of stored value) BEFORE you meet up with us.

- If you are running a little late, meet us on the platform at Wilshire/Vermont. If you want to meet us at North Hollywood Station, be there by 10am; we should arrive shortly thereafter. We will not be waiting around for people at either location (or the donut shop for that matter; be on time or miss the ride).

- The route is about 65 miles, several of which are off-road. There is one very large hill (and a few smaller ones).

- Because of the increased distance, we will likely be riding slightly faster than usual. Plus, given the addition of off-roading and hill climbing, if you have never done a 60+-mile ride before, this is probably not a good one with which to start. Please be realistic about whether this is something you can/want to do. (Also: not a ride for single speed or fixed bikes; you'll want gears, and good brakes.)

- Depending on timing, we will either stop at a grocery store to pick up lunch and then carry our food a short distance to where we'll eat, or else we'll stop at a later grocery store and eat there. You don't really need to bring a lock; someone can watch bikes while others go inside the store.

- You should bring water, bring snacks, bring sunscreen, and -- in case things really sprawl out -- bring an extra layer of clothing and lights.

- We will riding back to the donut shop.

- This is the first of four planned once-monthly, weekend, daytime rides this fall/winter. The others will be on Dec. 5, Jan. 9, and February 6.
