The Passage of a Few People Through a Rather Brief Moment in Time #338 - Winter Wonderland

One or more persons during a certain period drop their usual motives
for movement and action, their relations, their work and leisure activities,
and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the
encounters they find there.

It's a bike ride.

Started by user nathansnider and user theroyalacademy.

It meets every Wednesday at 8:30pm
at California Donuts #21.
We ride at 9pm.
While we endeavor to return before the last red line trains (around midnight),
it is generally not possible. Please plan accordingly.

On this bike ride, you might expect:
- inconvenient passageways
- oblique strategies
- Oulipian constraints
- disorientation
- reorientation
- "cover" versions of other people's rides, performed with amateurish enthusiasm
- amateurish enthusiasm
- playgrounds, pool halls, bowling alleys, karaoke
- geocaching
- full moon picnics
- traffic median tea parties
- rivers that no longer exist
- smell tourism
- Couchwick v2.0

Furthermore:
- usually 20-35 miles
- usually some hills
- a medium pace (probably not for beginners; certainly not a hustle)
- few stops, short stops
- but we're not in a rush; we don't need to run every light
- victory donuts!

This week:

Winter Wonderland


The theme of this week's ride probably conjures up an image of a white and blue landscape, with pine trees weighed down by snow, a glassy layer of ice on the pond, lines of smoke extending from fireplaces, perhaps a reindeer or a snowman or something. Bing Crosby is the soundtrack. Or Idina Menzel. And that's all fine and good, as it goes, but let's face it: that's not our winter here in Los Angeles. At all. No, the wonderful thing about our winter is its likelihood of being balmy and clear. Maybe even too warm during the day — but quite lovely for a long, late nighttime bike ride!

So this week we luxuriate in our own wintery wonderland with what will indeed likely be a rather late night. We've got hills and off-roading and views and balminess aplenty. Bring your low gears and your high spirits!

(Solid 3-donut-rated ride; ~30 miles; lots of climbing; lots of off-roading; plus a Metro ride to North Hollywood at the start)

+ Please arrive at the meet up with a Tap card with fare on it already in hand, so we don't have to wait for you to buy a card.

++ If you want to meet us at North Hollywood station, you should get there by 9:40. If we make the earlier train — and if the trains are running on time — we should arrive there at that time. If we catch a later train, it could be more like 10. Either way, we are not waiting at North Hollywood. The ride will end at the California Donuts.
