The Passage of a Few People Through a Rather Brief Moment in Time #298 - Scout's Honor

One or more persons during a certain period drop their usual motives
for movement and action, their relations, their work and leisure activities,
and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the
encounters they find there.

It's a bike ride.

Started by user nathansnider and user theroyalacademy.

It meets every Wednesday at 8:30pm
at California Donuts #21.
We ride at 9pm.
We endeavor to return before the last red line trains (around midnight),
but it is generally not possible. Please plan accordingly.

On this bike ride, you might expect:
- inconvenient passageways
- oblique strategies
- Oulipian constraints
- disorientation
- reorientation
- "cover" versions of other people's rides, performed with amateurish enthusiasm
- amateurish enthusiasm
- pool halls
- bowling alleys
- karaoke
- geocaching
- full moon picnics
- traffic median tea parties
- rivers that no longer exist
- smell tourism
- Couchwick v2.0

Furthermore:
- usually 20-35 miles
- usually some hills
- a medium pace (probably not for beginners; certainly not a hustle)
- few stops, short stops
- but we're not in a rush; we don't need to run every light
- victory donuts!

This week:

Scout's Honor


We have, perhaps, somewhat of a reputation for understatement. We say "a few
hills" or "some off-roading" and it turns out there are many, big hills or is
a lot of off-roading. We see it as more a matter of perspective, but we are
also aware that some people see it as a matter of outright lying. So let's split the
difference and call it "understatement." Fine.

Every once in a while, though, we cut through the willful obfuscation (if that is what
you want to call it) and tell it like it is. This is one of those times: on this ride there
is a hill. A big hill. A big hill that will, as we near the top, become a hike. Because it
is steep. And the terrain is not so great. Because, oh yeah, there is off-roading. A
good deal of it. Some on the uphill (see a few sentences ago, re: hiking), but mostly
on the downhill. There is a lot of off-road downhill.

And so, if you're not into those sorts of things, this might not be the ride for you.
However, if you are, you are in luck -- it will be awesome. Scout's honor.

+++ Note: We will start by taking the Metro to NoHo. Please bring a Tap card with
at least $1.75 on it to the start, if you can, to save time at the station. Or meet us at
NoHo around 9:30 (we may be later but we won't wait around).
