The Passage of a Few People Through a Rather Brief Moment in Time #271 - Hunting Season

10.15.14

One or more persons during a certain period drop their usual motives
for movement and action, their relations, their work and leisure activities,
and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the
encounters they find there.

It's a bike ride.

Started by user nathansnider and user theroyalacademy.

It meets every Wednesday at 8:30pm
at California Donuts #21.
We ride at 9pm.
We'll endeavor to return before the last red line trains (around midnight),
but often it is not possible.

On this bike ride, you might expect:
- inconvenient passageways
- oblique strategies
- Oulipian constraints
- disorientation
- reorientation
- "cover" versions of other people's rides, performed with amateurish enthusiasm
- amateurish enthusiasm
- pool halls
- bowling alleys
- karaoke
- geocaching
- full moon picnics
- traffic median tea parties
- rivers that no longer exist
- smell tourism
- Couchwick v2.0

Furthermore:
- usually 20-35 miles
- usually some hills
- a medium pace (probably not for beginners; certainly not a hustle)
- few stops, short stops
- but we're not in a rush; we don't need to run every light
- victory donuts!

This week:

Hunting Season

The overcast mornings, the slight (very slight!) chill in the air -- yes, it's beginning
to feel like autumn in Los Angeles. And while that might make you think of an
onslaught of pumpkin-flavored goodies, for us it means just one thing: hunting
season! You know us for our cycling adventures, but what we really consider
ourselves, first and foremost, are Sportsmen (no, not really, but play along with
us here). Knickers and helmets are fine and good, but never do we feel more
comfortable than when we swath ourselves in camouflage and grab our arrows
and bows (because, obviously, we're bow hunters, right?).

And, sure, we live in the Big City, but it is a city surrounded and punctuated by
nature. And as we encroach ever more on that nature (and as it is, additionally,
choked by drought), said nature will encroach ever more upon us. Indeed,
the number of different creatures, great and small, seen while scouting this route
was truly amazing. In parks, along rivers, chilling in front yards: creatures! Just
waiting to be shot!

Okay, okay, no shooting (please, NO SHOOTING) will happen on this ride.
We'll just behold nature; we'll "appreciate" it. We'll be awed by its beauty and
majesty and quiet/scurrying dignity. So grab your bikes and orange vests and
let's "hunt" a little nature!

(Bring your TAP card because we'll be taking the Metro again; thereafter
~25 miles; one decent hill; some off-roading; this message should not be
construed as a promise of any actual sightings of creatures, great or small;
commune with nature at your own risk)

**REMINDER** Our new policy of leaving on-time, at 9pm sharp, remains
in place. Please show up by 9pm, ready to ride!

All cities are geological;
you cannot take three steps
without encountering ghosts
bearing all the prestige of their legends.
