The Passage of a Few People Through a Rather Brief Moment in Time #386: Megalomania
One or more persons during a certain period drop their usual motives for movement and action, their relations,
their work and leisure activities, and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the
encounters they find there.
Its a bike ride.
Started by user nathansnider and user theroyalacademy.
It meets every Wednesday at 8:30pm at California Donuts #21.
We ride at 9pm.
On the eighth year of this bike ride, you might expect:
- more inconvenient passageways
- more full moon picnics
- perhaps more "cover" versions of other peoples rides, performed with amateurish enthusiasm
- certainly more amateurish enthusiasm
- pool halls
- bowling alleys
- dance parties
- imaginary histories
- scavenging for fun and sustenance
- more geocaching
- more oblique strategies
- more Oulipian constraints
- traffic median tea parties
- A medium pace (maybe not for beginners; certainly not a hustle)
- Were not in a rush; we dont need to run every light.
- Maybe some distance;maybe some hills
- Victory donuts!
**NOTE: It is currently raining, and the forecast calls for rain throughout the evening. If there is more than a
light drizzle at 9pm, we will revert to our usual backup plan of bowling at Shatto Lanes. However, it looks like
we may get a break in the rain for just long enough to have a pleasant evening bicycle ride.**
Dream big, they say. Fake it till you make it. Dont let the haters get you down. This can all be good advice of
course, up to a point. It all depends on what sort of big dreams you have, how many people you have to "fake
it" to, and whether the haters actually have some really good points.
The conundrum here is that the biggest dreamers can have the most damaging ideas and the least
ability/desire to assess their merit. And though Los Angeles certainly has no monopoly on this kind of
grandiosity, it does have its own ways of cultivating and institutionalizing it, some of which we will explore
tonight, on bicycles.
(about 20 miles; paved; maybe a couple small hills)
