Robotic Automobiles

Since there is many public transit(philes)' on here. I am curious about what many of you think Robotic Automobiles will do for for public transportation or transportation in general?
Other thoughts. What do you think of Robotic Cars? Do you fear or welcome the safety aspect, do you think it is a good or bad idea? Does this just proliferate the car culture, or create a space where people can be in their chip body(existing in a electronic forum) while transporting themselves?
Link any articles you feel are worth reading on to this thread.

it's going to be ridiculous but hopefully the cars will slow roll and time the lights.

I'm sure a computer ran automobile could be programmed to run as it is programmed, to slow roll and time the lights.
Do you think laws will or should be implemented to do such things you mentioned?
Can these cars be set to only travel at a certain speed on certain roads.
If these car's computers are speaking with the computer that run the city traffic lights could it not be sat up to run traffic more efficiently.
Would it come a point where having a car that the occupant operate the vehicle would be a danger to road full of mostly computer automated cars?
Why do you say it is going to be ridiculous?

I'm sure there will be intended consequences (as there always are), but I will welcome our robot overlords when they take over the driving. At least they'll be able to do it in an efficient, logical and non-aggressive manner. Too many people lose their humanity when they get behind the wheel of a car.

It will be ridiculous just for that last part you wrote. The transition from human driven to non human driven is going to be interesting... Law abiding robots along side the speeders and drunks....

Maybe, but it's going to make the speeders and aggro drivers stand out more. As it is now, almost everyone is speeding, even if they're just trying to stay out of the way. A robotic driver isn't going to be intimidated by some human in a car tailgating and honking.

I'm still waiting for the sterile Le Courbusierian towers and the panoptical surveillance state! Oh, wait, we did get those
The defenders of sprawl are hyping up the robocars hardcore. It's all they've got, at this point. So, no matter how inane, dangerous, and destructive a robocar infrastructure would be--and it would make the late twentieth century built landscape, with its strip malls and six-lane arterials, look like an Arcadian paradise by comparison--you can fully expect to read a whole lot of breathless praise for the driverless ambulopod from Joel Kotkin wannabes like
this guy. And, of course, from "futurists," i.e. the same agorophobic ninnies who were so excited about the Internet 20 years ago because they thought it was going to make physical Main Streets obsolete...

It is literally not possible to take enough recreational drugs to make that fucking movie tolerable. I suffered through it once, back when you had to rent movies at the video store and if you didn't like the one you rented you watched it anyway, because what else were you gonna do? Log on to http://www.midnightridazz.com/forums.php on the World Wide Web that didn't exist yet?

It really is about the worst movie ever made. And incredibly violent too. But also the best movie ever made because of who made who.
