MR Club Promoters
Thread started by

so what's with the new trend of rides going to los globos/other clubs?
the owners of that craphole see a target market/profitable scene and are more than happy to exploit it. instead of rides exploring a new corner of town or supporting a community space, we're paying for overpriced drinks at a shitty establishment. i love bars, i love hanging out with my friends, and i love music. but even among bars/clubs, globos isn't good for any of those things.
it's cool if people are apiring djs/club promoters/party boyz, but are you willing to exploit your friends to make it happen?
make your own scene. don't monetize ours.

turning me into a little drama whore. when does this ride start?
, I respect your comment, but dont agree with you . . SIMPLY because you have been to most of our rides where we have used the midnightridazz logos and as we recall, you were raggin with the best of us. We are not capitalizing on the LOGO just letting everyone know we are bike friendly. We ride bikes every day and yes produce events. Everyone seems to enjoy our events and we are bringing to the cycling community. So if this really bothers you, then dont come and please its a small community. lets support one another, grow up and not hate! you along with everyone else enjoyed our party. Why do you have to HATE! Have a good day. BTW

I've seen the fliers... there's always that pressure that happens when you see a big crowd of people to find ways to monetize it. the good news is that this scene isnt really susceptible to monetizing by it's nature. we're a bunch of bike bumzz. we can be in a parking lot and have more fun than being cooped up in a club that you have to pay for, pay extra for drinks and still not get laid.

here's a tactic for you.
If you don't like where a ride is stopping, do go on the ride or don't stop there.
I've ditched dozens of rides in the first 30 mins because I wasn't feeling it that night.
Rides are always free, as in, you are free to do some other shit if your not feeling it.
There is usually 3 other rides to choose from an any given night.
Certainly they are not going to Los Globos.
Speaking of.
I'll never hate on an Artist for trying to get their FRIENDS who ride bikes to bring more friends to come out and see them perform. Don't we want groups of people bike-pooling to cultural events and supporting artists in our extended Fam?

There have been plenty of events that we have been led to that don't blow and everyone has a great time. Events where we weren't lied to and weren't looked at as potential dollar signs.
You've personally taken Ridazz to events and we have had a great time. Ridazz were treated like guests instead of bike scum.
People are talking about this event because we gave it a chance and it was flawed, to say the least. We were promised cheap drinks, got there, drinks were $7 at least. (I argued with the bar tender and got a $4 shot of whisky) We were told the event was going on until 4am. It ended at 1:30 (Don't tell a bike ride from the west side to ride over there and say it'll go on late and not deliver. That's not ok.) They were trying to tell us we weren't aloud to lock our bikes outside and HAD to use their bike valet. (Seeing a security guard trying to figure out a response to "tow it" is fun though.)
Maybe you should link up with these kids, Trickmillz, and show em how it's done!

Sounds more like and issue with one night one promoter.
Not the concepts of inviting people to come out on bikes.
I've blasted my ears over the years so I try and make it worth my while.
There are ample opportunities to blast ones eardrums and buy expensive drinks in this town. I try to pick those opportunities carefully.
There is lots of free outdoor entertainment in this town.
Clubs are neither. Ever.
They are expensive to own and run ... but if the right thing is coming through the sound system there is nothing like it.
We are all walking dollar signs.
Wether its to house of spirits, viacom, or some junkie trying to sell us a hot bike.
Its amazing the people here are so generous with their space.
That we can have parties where people donate their living space, their sound equipment, their talent, to host and entertain us.
But if being an artist, dj, musician, entertainer, whatever, is to be sustainable, then there has to be some way for artists and the people who host and promote them to make money too.
Usually that means some owner of something is making a big chunk of the cash.
But isn't that always the case?
Its not like PBR is being brewed by some gutter punks that live under a bridge.

I dont think anyone is complaining about artists that invite their friends to see them play... I think this is just simply about usage of the logo to promote a club... and a crappy club at that.
maybe the solution is what is always seemed to be.... find a job that you dig and work there and make yo cheese... then in the evening, put on your cape (ridazz patch) and mask (smile) and roll out with friends and fellow FUNthusiasts in the streets adventuring about the earth, not worried about money or venues or obligations...
I fucking LOVE that I can go on a ride and the DJ is travelling along with US. The food is travelling along with US and WE are adventuring and creating our own clubs out of long forgotten or under utilized public spaces.

i'm all for supporting friends artistic endeavors. and i've done tons of it and think everyone should. (even if the mickeys grenades at barcade are kinda expensive <3)
it just becomes a blurry line when it starts to feel like a club or venue sees the money in a such a large group and encourages our friends that happen to be djs, or are just looking to put on a fun/charitable event ,to bring it to them. i feel like they're being taken advantage of just as much as we are.
the idea of diy/communal/not for profit events vs. commercial business, target marketing, and exploitation combined with friends pursuing their art or ambitions creates a bit of a blurry mess.
everyone should act according to their own comfort level and ideals, but i get mighty defensive and uncomfortable when something so grassroots that has always been based on unimaginable fun completely outside the mainstream starts to drift into the paradigm of hollywood clubs and their chain of exploitation (owners-> promoters-> performers-> patrons).

Its up to every artist and every patron to decide what's OK for them, what's mutually beneficial, and what's "exploitation".
Exploitation implies a dominating power structure that victimizes people without another choice.
And I think by any measure, people who love music and ride bikes in LA have plenty of choices.
I don't go out that much. But if something good is playing at the Echo, I am all to happy to hand over my money to them, If I have it. Its the best sound in LA and I have had my mind blown there many of times.
I've also had my mind blown at the Smell at a fraction of the price.
Lets face it.
We ARE dollar signs to every business that sees us coming.
Just like everybody else.
We keep shit pretty DIY around here.
There is general repulsion to crass commercialism that has had most flirtations of with trying to commodify this culture fleeting and unsustainable.
I've never understood the paranoia about "selling out" or "exploitation" as ridazz as a whole have a really good bullshit detector.

it's not that we don't have choices and i'm all for supporting art in all it's forms and the avenues that spread it to the masses (i'm typing this from my desk at an independent book publisher right now). i just get my undies a little twisted when i feel like things might be heading in the direction of limited choices and exploitation.
it's been an extremely slow transition (thankfully), but as a whole we've been much more receptive to commercialization and the dark alleys it can lead down as time goes on. it feels like a shift from counter-culture (actively rallying against the cultural and societal norms) to a sub culture existing and participating within them.
it's natural and not necessarily bad (the best venues, the best galleries, the best record labels, the best publishers, and on and on are the ones that started in a bedroom and grew to a size where they could influence more people and spread good art to wider audiences) and i forever hope that's the road we take with cycling and using public space and supporting good causes and creative outputs.
but that's getting too broad. let's just have our parties in cooler places than los putos and maintain control of who we are and what we do.

Well...the thing is that people's personal bullshit detectors, like the spam detectors on email servers, need occasional updating with new information about the various forms that the bullshit takes. In both cases this is done by sharing that information widely and noting patterns. That's what people are doing here. Disscussing stuff. On a discussion forum. For everybody's benefit. It's OK.

I just saw this, so excuse me for chiming in so late in the conversation.
I'm one of the organizers in question here.
It's simple yet weird, 9 out out of 10 friends who attend our rides really like what we do and always ask "WHAT NEXT". The other "1%" criticize us on line, but don't talk to us about it in person and have not presented any validity as to how we are capitalizing or exploiting our cycling community as indicated in this thread! Before starting these rides I actually took the time to consult other ride leaders about their thoughts on these rides and everyone one of them was in favor of adding something new to a ride. "A party destination, just like a movie ride or a picnic ride or brunch or pizza ride".
SO LETS BE CLEAR HERE: It's simple:
These rides are all about FUN and meting people and discovering new experiences!
I LOVE RIDING MY BIKE, BECAUSE EVERY DAY I EXPERIENCE AND DISCOVER SOMETHING NEW ABOUT THE CITY I RIDE IN. Isn't that what life is all about?
I've been a cyclist for many years. I collect bikes, promote cycling and ride every day. Not because I have to, but because i want to. The events I've recently created are no different from other events I've attended in the last 5 years prior to mine.
The event I have this Saturday is a BENEFIT ride for HURRICANE SANDY and a Thanks Giving Food DRIVE. No benefit to us! (READ THE INVITATION!!!!!!)
Our previous Castle ride ended up in a HOLLYWOOD HILLS castle location we rented out of our own money. We DID NOT CHARGE for the post ride event entrance although we are called the 99 cents ride and sold beer ONE: to avoid trouble with the neighbors. TWO: to to cover the rental cost of the location and equipment for the party.
IN FACT: I did not see my contributions back and left home that night very content knowing everyone had a safe and good time.
Our Halloween Ride two weeks ago was also FREE! We made no money!
In fact we gave away free shots and beers as prizes for our costume contest and apple bobbing contests at no cost to riders.
I chose Los Globos, because I have access to it. While I work here producing concerts and events many of my cycling friends come to my events and have suggested countless times that I lead a ride here. SO I DID! While I wish I could give away free booze all the time, I do not own the business so all I can do is provide a place. People have a right to choose where they want to go. Sometimes people want to explore and discover new places and friends. There is nothing wrong with that. THIS IS NOT A BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY NOR IS IT AN ABUSE OF A CULTURE IVE BEEN A PART OF FOR SEVERAL YEARS NOW.
My events simply provide something new to the end of each ride other than ending up at a park at the end of the night or parking lot trying to figure out where the nearest liquor store is. (Not that I've ever minded)
The name 99 Cents ride came about, because we meet across the 99 cents store on Sunset Blvd and were going to be giving away random 99 cents goodies to our riders. When we decided that we did not want our rides to always end up at dark alleys or parks in the middle of the night we decided to incorporate our entertainment connections to add something new the the experience. So far NO ONE IS COMPLAINING! When we ask for an optional 99 cents donation its only to pay for our DJS time and contributions.
I respect that cyclists come together in preservation and protection of our small community, I'm all about it! but dont be fooled, With these bike events I've managed to encourage more riders who were skeptical about riding at night and have been talking to more businesses about making their establishments more bike friendly.
My events are no different than the other events on this blog, perhaps just a little more organized. There is an event coming up to support the NEW FORT. Why has no one commented on that? It's exactly the same thing, except that they are charging $10 to finance the FORT project and we only ask for 99 cents donations to cover event costs.
and once again, people have the right to make their own decisions. I personally will be there in support and will not try to influence how people should feel about that project.
In regards to DJ WALLY and the other cyclists who provide music, I actually commend them very much, because once again they provide that extra spice to our rides with good tunes and ambience.
So to clarify, we are all about fun on two wheels and life.
If anyone has any further comments I can be reached at mr.aneuno@gmail.com

Fun is fine.
Here are the guidelines of MR, as stated above in the About the Ridazz section:
What Midnight Ridazz is NOT:
-Mean Spirited
-Political
-Commercialized
-Non-inclusive
-Abrasive
-Protest
You probably shouldn't be using the MR logo if you're asking for money, REGARDLESS of how you rationalize it.
"My events are no different than the other events on this blog, perhaps just a little more organized. There is an event coming up to support the NEW FORT. Why has no one commented on that? It's exactly the same thing, except that they are charging $10 to finance the FORT project and we only ask for 99 cents donations to cover event costs."
Probably because the The Fort is a FMLY project not an MR project, and because they're not using the MR logo. (They haven't posted up on the MR calendar page either.)
"So to clarify, we are all about fun on two wheels and life."
So are we, But I think a lot of us would like to see people asking for money on rides NOT HAPPEN, especially if you're going to be posting up here and/or using the MR logo.
This doesn't mean that you can't run your own rides and ask for money, just please don't affiliate yourself with MR, because MR is NOT COMMERCIALIZED. Taking something a lot of people have worked very hard to keep non-commercial and using it to ask for money for your own project, isn't cool.
Again, if you want to organize your own rides and bring them back to particular venues and ask for cash, nobody's trying to stop you, just please don't use the MR logo while you do it.

suck it. it really sucks july brought our disagreement public and it really hurt my feelings. i reacted instantly. i learned a lot from it. still, it's nobody's business.
i do realize i've had 4 arguments in one post. i also realize i never told a lie and know what my intentions are, and I think the people I care about will see that as well. but trust me I'm done fighting for a scene that doesn't even give a shit about itself. I am the loudest noise in this MR logo thing and I don't even give a shit. I was just curious. can you say "fuck it?"
I'm no fighter, just lover. i believe in the collective conscious and our every thought, action, gossip, feeling contributes to the positivity and negativity of the world, and our future.
i'm still learning right vs. wrong and good vs. evil and am having a hard time figuring out the balance between speaking up when evil is being done, and not interfering in the fate of the universe.
you should know when i'm trolling.
asshole.

Also, glad someone finally brought up the topic of club promotion. It was bugging me and people made sure to let me know because people LOVED the rides everything was cool. I completely agree with Rosie that the one ride the Westside came to was a shit show and it really bugged me.
But if Roadblock is cool, then I suppose it doesn't matter but "People like them" isn't a proper response to a question of ethics. However, the Clubs have genuinely been very cool with us, especially Los Globos, it has generally been a good time since that one ride. However I don't approve of anyone within the community making money off of using the community name. Thats a personal opinion.

"the owners of that craphole see a target market/profitable scene and are more than happy to exploit it..."
As far as Los Globos from my perspective, I tend to see a target soundsystem market and a profitable danceparty (currency = full bass frequencies) rather than them exploiting us for a few bucks (the glass is more than half full imo). They have the best [stationary] soundsystem money can buy. Literally. (funktion one)
That has to count for something!
