the train is slow as fuck and the price adds up when a bunch of people take the train. it makes more sense to carpool in a fuel efficient car and do it in one day. It's about a 13-15 hour drive if you just go straight up I-5.
brassknuckle06.8.07 - 2:37 pm

Slow as fuck = smell the roses. Good scenery between here and Portland, no?
Anyway, let's talk lodging. I am the total opposite of a comfort snob, but others may feel differently. Who's got leads? Low-key hotels? Motels (no lobby to have to take your bike through)? Party-oriented backpacker hostels who don't care if there are twenty of you coming in at 4 AM and you all have bikes?

I'm having surgery Monday and will be out of commission for 6 weeks as they will have to cut through a couple of muscles to get to the problem. If we can do this in late august, I'll drive. I can fit 3 more people in my car and I have a good friend in Eugene who is a cyclist who can introduce us to some riders up there. I've been waiting for someone to suggest this...
Let's spank this bitch!

I like the hostel idea, if it is all of us occupying a dorm. I have heard nightmere hostile stories, about the other travelers.
Smelling the rose on the train, I have taken that Coast Starlight many of times, and it don't smell nothing like floweres. 13-14 hours on ain't bad.
Believe it or not (quit read now Hobsmob) I perfer taking the greyhound that route, much quicker, but they are ass holes about bikes. Box it and pay extra. If there is a bus line that serve the immigrant community that goes up there like Transporte Intercalifornias, that would be great, they are way more laid back and let you throw your ride in the luggage compartment, no problem. They are 10% cheaper then Greyhound.
FYI (I said quit reading CHS) the Coaststar light train ride from Settle to Portland is cool. It is fine all the way to oakland. Oakland to Los Angeles is so much longer then a bus. 12 hours train vs 6 hours bus.

man, I've been planning to go to portland, I've got some free airline tickets I gotta use up, this might be a good time. just pay for boxin my bike, or stash it on a rack with one of you fools...

I have stayed in many a hostel, both here and abroad, and have never had any problems with other travelers. If we can get a dorm to ourselves (many hostels offer this), even that won't be a problem.
I was also thinking about Greyhound. Other options include renting a van (or vans) or chartering a bus (Green Tortoise?), and yes, carpooling.
All this will depend, of course, on how many brave, adventurous, sexy people want to come on this trip.
Let's whip this mule!

OK, does anybody have any objections to the weekend of August 17-19? Anybody have any better ideas for a date? Speak up now.
Let's have a virtual show of hands, also, of who is interested in doing this. No obligation, no salesman will call, just a show of interest. Then we can have an idea whether it is worth it to charter the Tortoise, ride the Amtrak, rent a van, carpool, hop a freight, or what.
Once the date is settled, I will post the ride/trip, which will make it official and thus inevitable. Then you guys who have friends in Portland can make some discreet inquiries about a possible friendly collision between our Zeppelin of Love and whatever metaphorical vehicle those guys up there have. IOW, if there are no events planned up there we can start one.

no offense but fuck a sunset junction. you are now absolutely required to pay $12-$15 to get in! just so I can walk through my own neighborhood! what do you really get? you get a massive sweatty wetty while walking through hordes of other people with swetty wetties. way over rated and just criminal to straight charge you to get in. as if they dont make enough from booth space rentals.
Roadblock06.11.07 - 1:18 pm
reply
I'll have to wait to see what my $$/work situation is like a little closer to the depart date.
here are some estimated travel expenses:
Amtrak is $89 each-way and the ride is 29.5 hours.
If the bike storage is anything like taking Amtrak South ... it is super easy!
-------------------------------
The trip by van would be 14+ hours if we drove straight through.
I'm guessing van would cost $80+ a day, could seat 5 + bikes and and the gas might be around $350-$400?
another option is to get a van that can hold 7+ passengers and tow a trailer for the bikes.
A trailer will reduce speed and milage but can securely hold the bikes and costs only $10-$20 a day extra. A trailer could also carry bikes for others traveling by light car or plane.
either way I think $100 - $150 per person if well spent would cover the travel costs of a shared van/ trailer plan.

trickmilla06.11.07 - 1:36 pm

Totally off topic, but sunset junction is a pile off shit. I always thought it was state law that you couldn't charge admission to a public street, hence the "suggested donation". I'm not 100% sure this is true, but it does seem to make sense. In years past i would pay whatever i had on hand ($0-$5) to get in and they always let me in. I never minded giving what i had, but I really don't think sunset junction is worth more than a few bucks. Last year, they were refusing to let me in when i had only a couple of bucks on me, so i resorted to sneaking in (which is incredibly easy to do there). I've heard Garcetti's office issued permits last year that allowed them to charge admission, but i never cared enough to look into it. I do remember there was an LA Weekly article a couple years back where the LAPD threatened to pull the alcohol permits if they didn't start posting "suggested donation" signs.
In any case it's not worth passing up a trip to portland to go to Sunset Junction.

OK, we have got a couple of votes for the train and a couple for renting a van or trailer. As time grinds on and we get a better idea of how many people are actually going to do this ridiculous thing, we can also look into the possibility of
chartering a bus. Who knows? It might work.
I would sure like to do the train, but I am aware that this would add to the in-transit time on both ends of the trip. It would also be nice if everybody could go the same way, just for the sake of conviviality, solidarity, a shared experience, and all of that shit. But that's another one that may have to bend to the realities of people's work schedules, finances, whip-cracking life partners or spouses, etc.
Portland Ridazz, oh yeah they ain't ashamed
Ridin' in the summer rain, and feelin' no pain
Swarmin' the Cascades like some sexy bees
Lookin' real smart in their dungarees
My my, poke you in the eye

Great lyrics PC, now let see you lay some music for it.
I agree, Sunset Junction is no great lose.
The Train is alright, the first couple of times, but I have take that Coast Starlight too many times already in my life. It nothing I look forward to again. I don't know how much they pack that train these days. In the past, you where able to have two seats to yourself and it made it more comfortable, last couple of times I road it, they had the thing full of people. Driving is so much quicker, the bus is really not all that bad, expect for the Greyhound employees attiude towards you.
Joe Borfo, you track record says you should just put yourself in the uncertain catorgory.
I would really consider, travel time in all of this. Are we leaving thursday and arriving home monday night, tuesday morning?
If we leave friday and arrive Saturday, then do we leave Sunday for Monday return, that in reality is one day in Portland, not really worth the travel to go for just one day.
Lets think about this.

conservative cost of renting a 15 person cargo van between 12 people with only one driver. I called avon and got a rate of $90 a day, with 150 free miles .24 cents extra per mile.
say four days at $360 plus $64 collusion insurance, must have liablity yourself, insurance coalision is 16 extra a day. = $420
an extra 1400 miles = $336
plus tax $63
rental rough estimate $819
gas for 2000 miles at 8gpm should be about $850
that is $1670 divided by 12 people= $140 per person
that is not including a u-haul trailer for the bikes.
This is a rough esitmate.
I'll get the trailer info later, got go, TOO HIP

If we were to do the train (or driving for that matter), I was thinking leave LA on Thursday morning > arrive in Portland Friday afternoon > Leave Portland Sunday afternoon > arrive back in LA Monday night.
Or, if being in Portland for Zoobomb is a priority for a significant portion of the crew, leave Monday morning and get back to LA on Tuesday night.
That would be a pretty long weekend, but isn't it worth it? We're going to go all that way, we might as well spend some quality time up there. In fact, I'm all for making it even longer if people want to and are able to.
In terms of cost, going by the figures presented by our accountant Sexy David, I think the Coast Starlight and the rental trailer will end up penciling out about the same. Round trip on the Starlight with the V185 promo code is about $160. So there are pros and cons to both approaches:
Driving Pros:
Get there quicker
Flexibility--leave when we want, stop whenever and wherever
Driving Cons:
Somebody has to drive the fucking thing
Finding a place to park the fucking thing
Picking up and returning the fucking thing
Freeway tedium
Liability
Whole lotta hydrocarbons
Train Pros:
Scenic
Kick back and let the engineer drive, sleep when you're tired
More environmentally sound
Train Cons:
Takes longer
Is it really OK to bring bikes unboxed?
Sexy might start killing people if he doesn't get two seats to himself (this may apply to driving as well)

A bus is actually more enviormentally sound then train for that matter. I don't think our van would be worse then a bus , not sure.
The train was never on schedule from oakland on to LA when I took it.
Take that in consideration, It always took longer then scheduled.
Parking the Van I doubt is going to be a problem. Remeber we have bikes and can park it wherever there is more space available.
I am, all for a longer time, if that works for people.
sexy06.12.07 - 1:33 pm

Yes! One vote for a longer time!
When I say environmentally sound, I'm talking about generating a vehicle trip versus getting on a scheduled train or bus that was going to make the trip whether or not we were on it.

Then I realized that there will probably be enough of us to put on our own freaky ride and invite all the Mystery people and other Portlandians to come along, and I got excited again.

Another idea: The Hoobomb Ride. In this ride, we all procure little kids' bikes and then gather in the middle of a level road. When the signal is given, we all mount the bikes, put our feet on the pedals, and immediately proceed to fall over. Then we throw the bikes into a big pile and start the after party.

I'm so glad I caught this thread. Portland was my last home and I've been trying to scheme a way to get back up there with my bike for some months now. I'm totally in. Are we for sure leaving on Thursday and returning on Monday? I want to get the days off work ASAP so I know for sure I can come.
This is such a good idea. Before I moved to LA people gave me so much shit about coming to car-central cityscape LA. Most people up there really have no idea what is going on down here. This is the perfect opportunity to show P-Town what LA has to offer!!

Not absolutely for-sure-for-sure on that yet. But it looks like we will definitely be staying at least that long. In other words, if there are any changes they will be to make the trip longer, not shorter.

Assuming I have some scratch at the time, I am totally down for this. I think I'd prefer taking a bus/train to a van, but I don't really care. I am down to camp, couch surf, motel, squat, whatever. If I can afford to go, I can stay as long as people want basically. The longer the better really. What I'm saying is I'm down for whatever.

I am going to contact Green Tortoise about a charter, however, keep in mind that there are probably DOT regulations that would prevent them from being able to drive us straight up there without stopping. This is where Amtrak and Greyhound have the definite advantage. Although, Greyhound has the significant disadvantage of being profoundly, soul-crushingly depressing.

Yeah, I think the only way I'm going to be able to do this crazy thing is if I fly, I have some tickets I have to use before the end of the year, and, well, this seems like the best thing to use them on, I just have to figure out how I'm going to get my bike there. If it turns out that the train tix (or whatever method decided upon) roundtrip are cheaper than the 100 it's going to cost me to fly my bike both ways, I'll gladly join you foos on whatever form of transport you decide on.

If you do decide to fly, there are some interesting and clever how-tos out there on the interwebs regarding ways to avoid the ridiculous airline bike fees (usually by partially dismantling the bike and stowing it in ordinary luggage or non-bike-shaped bags).
PC06.27.07 - 3:44 am

well, southwest (who I have my free tix through) doesn't have a "bike fee" it just goes as oversized luggage, as long as it's boxed, and being that a fixed gear is probably what I will be riding, reassembly will only take me a few minutes.

Roadblock06.27.07 - 3:44 pm
reply
The only potential problems with the hippie bus (Green Tortoise) are:
1) that the bus only has one driver, and that driver is probably subject to DOT regs regarding how long he can drive without an eight hour sleep break. So driving all the way up in one shot may be impossible. (Greyhound can do it because they're a huge company with multiple depots where drivers can swap out; and of course Amtrak has scheduled crew changes.)
2) possibly because of 1), I've heard that the Tortoise doesn't really specialize in trips where they shuttle you from point A to point B, wait a few days, and then shuttle you back. But this could all be bunkum for all I know.
One thing I was thinking of was to inquire as to whether the Tortoise might want to do a trip where we go up to Portland and "camp" in the bus every night (the buses have little individual beds for each traveler). There would still be the only-one-driver problem, though, probably.
We will find out all of this for sure, very soon. Meanwhile, keep the train in mind. And like I said, resign yourselves to the fact that we're going a long way and it may take a relatively long time. Adjust attitudes accordingly, and
relax and enjoy it. Trips always go better that way.

Trip to Portland August 17-19th
Who - Anyone who likes bikes
What - A trip to Portland to meet and explore the bicycle community, to do a Midnight Ridazz ride, to camp, and to have fun.
When - AUGUST 17-19 , 2007
Where - Portland, Oregon
Why - Portland has a huge bicycle community. The streets are very bike friendly. Let's show Portland that L.A. has Ridazz too.
How- Amtrak, or Chartered-Bus is being discussed. Camping and hostels arrangements are being discussed. See message board.

One more thing. I can rent and drive a 15 passenger van, a U-haul trailer hitched for the bicycles, and I can drive it. All that I ask is that people chip in for the price at the end. If we have more than 15 peeps, then we can arrange for another vehicle to follow, caravan style.
This is just an option. I am of course willing to Amtrak or Charter-Bus.

They hold about thirty people, and just from eyeballing them they look like they'd be legal to drive with a class C license. Maybe something to keep in mind if we ultimately get more than fifteen people. Or as an alternative to van-plus-trailer: people in the front rows; bikes, luggage, tools and shit in the back rows?

I've got a hybrid that can carry 4 passengers fairly comfortably. And a decent bike rack that can hold 3 bikes max. And two bikes can be broken down into the trunk. Not much room for extra luggage though.
Perhaps I could borrow my mom's minivan than can seat 6 people, I'll try to ask and see in advance. Still, the bike storage space is an issue. It has no racks.
So, If Sexy wanted to drive my hybrid, and If I can drive the minivan that covers 12 people. Also, if anybody else has a pickup truck that can haul the rest of the bikes and a couple more heads, that might be all that we will need, depending on the final head count. No rental fees, just Gas Money and Hand Jobs.

Camping is fun, but the thing is that everybody would have to bring sleeping bags and shit, which means that much more luggage in addition to the bikes.

RV?! You can't fit more than 5 passengers in an RV, Laharr.

Wouldn't it make sense to take advantage of this? Also, wouldn't you rather wake up every morning already in the central city than to have to keep going back and forth between the city and the campsite?
Thirty sleeping bags or air mattresses = a lot of cubic feet of storage space. Plus it's one more thing to have to bring with you from your house to wherever the van is and back.

I don't think extra stuff like sleeping bags and shit will be a problem. Bikes arn't too efficent on space, ( a lot of space in the main triangle to stuff stuff)
Whatever the choice is for transportation, and lodging, the space needs to be booked/reserved soon before someone else does.

I drive a rig for SWIFT and we have a terminal in Troutdale.
Is there a direct riding route to get from there to Portland, or is the public transit system the same one utilized in the inner-city area?
This is all complacent on myself actually being in the area at the time. Last time I was in the area, I dropped off one load, then I was assigned another within two minutes of finishing the previous.
I'm not going to let that happen again.

I should've added that I wanted to ride down to there from the Troutdale terminal.
As already known, a tractor rig is as big as a tank.
No chance I'm going to get screamed at for parking in the city.
So, if someone could give me some info as to getting there via bike route or public transit, then that would be extremely helpful.
BTW, the terminal is located right next to the Troutdale Muni Airport, which could be seen off the 80.
I'm also out of SoCal and my first mass ride was the Vegas run on the Fri the 13th.

Marino has been doing the work researching. It turns out we can only rent 12 seat vans to go to Portland. The current confirmed list is covered for transport once he and I book these vans.
I suggest we ask "Maybe" List, to give a definate yes or no by next week? Perhaps those on the maybe list can arrange their own rental/carpool? I will be glad to help once we discover there is a need for another vehicle, however we have to get things booked or it may not be available later on.

-Van rental reservation
-Camping spot(s) reservation

sexy07.20.07 - 10:55 am
reply
Shipping bikes would be way more expensive than uhaul trailer. I deal with UPS daily, I should know. Plus I used to work in UPS. You DONT want to ship your bike that way...
Why I have diapers should not be a question for Borfo. I have a ton.
The real question is. Does anyone have a truck with a trailer hitch? We will need to do this because most of the rental van companies wont let us haul a trailer. All we need is one person to volunteer thier car/van/truck with a triler hitch so that we can attach the bike trailer to it. The cost of the rental and gas will be covered in the per person price.
Come on. Somebody help us.
Our last resort would just be to put trailer hitches on the vans behind the van rental company's back.... ? eh?
Joe Borfo07.20.07 - 12:15 pm
reply
I'm actually shipping my bike up there, which according to a buddy will cost me around $50 (unless you guys have room for one extra bike in the trailer). There may be a way to pack all the bikes together and ship them, but my guess is it's still going to be pricey and take a week. Most people prob don't want to be without their bikes for that long. If you do decide to go that route, don't forget that i will be in Portland all week so I can probably take care of shipping everything back to LA.
The other side of it is, the truck hauling the trailer will take longer to get to Portland (has to drive slower). The cost of gas will be a lot and there is also the cost of the uhaul trailer rental. I really don't know which will be cheaper.
Anyone?
brassknuckle07.20.07 - 12:24 pm
reply
One other thing, I spoke to one of the Shadow Battalion guys who recently moved up to Portland. He's getting people together to ride with us up there and he's also looking into camping situations. He said they'll probably just camp with us if that's the route we go.
brassknuckle07.20.07 - 12:27 pm

What about renting a U-Haul moving type van? You all could sit in back along with your bikes, should hold at least 15 people? Not too many windows though, and maybe hot, no ventilation, but if you travel at night, there's not too much you can see anyway in the darkness...just a thought. One good sized van could hold all thirty bikes.

Wow PC, I'm really honored that you are going to have a ride named after me. Works great with all you naysayers going up to Portland, to whine about the hippies. I'll find it interesting to see if you still can handle rolling around in your diapers. It like riding a bike, you never forget, but by the list of people going to Portland, its looks as if most of you will all have to learn to ride a bicycle the first time. Riding around in diapers should be perfect for all of you, since you are all full of shit already. Placid Casual. is that the pet name your lover gave to you after he/she left in disguist with your ductile performance in bed?
Somebody get a pacifier for Gimpy Joe Borfo. I think he is still lashing out about the pain from his jacked-up ankle, that causes him to ride like a penguine.
Maybe I should I go up to Portland to be part of this ride. Oh no, I'm not going with the likes of all of you. I would end up in the insane asylunm after driving with "the cyclist" who complain about all the drivers around town driving too fast and then your lead foot driving, risking the life of the worthless (those going from LA) and the worthy (all the innocent bystanders on the road being victimized by your too fast and lack of cordination non-driving skills. Just because you ride a bike sometimes (alot of you are velorutionary posser), don't think the rules of the road don't apply to you. If the speed limit says 70mph, that applies to the left lane also. Don't tail gate my driver if he is in the "fastlane" traveling at the fastest speed that laws allows.
Another thing. The way you all ride bicycle, no you don't have a right to the lane, your all just too dangerous to be on the road, even in a bicycle lane. Better yet, you should all stay home and play with your legos. You can build things, and then tear it down, like you are tearing down society

Attention:
We made a rough miscalculation on the van rental price.
The price per person will now be $255
VAN COSTS - weekly rental
Rental - Base Rate
$599.99
Insurance ($32.45/day x 7 days)
$227.15
Cost per mile over 1050 miles ($0.25)
$237.50
Surcharge (13.6102%)
$113.98
Tax (8.25%)
$78.50
MPG
10
Miles
2000
Gas price / gallon
$3.30
Total Gas Cost
$660.00
For two vans, the cost is $3834.24. That is working out to about $255 a person.
This is the best we can do. Price-wise, this is still the best option of all the different transportation methods that we've considered. We will be doing a collection. Details will be posted soon. Come on folks. We can do this. Portland!
Joe Borfo07.23.07 - 1:05 pm

correction: the final price is actually dropping because more people are joining up. approximately 6 more spaces left in the van. hurry up!... because we are going to cap this soon so that we can get things rolling!

So tell me to fuck off for throwing this monkey wrench in this at this time.
With the price of the Van(s) being what they are and the cost for gas, would it be cheaper, to say, take cars. Do people have cars that will go 2000 miles and are they willing to take them? What kind of mileage do you get, how many people can you fit in them? At cost of $169 - $250, would it be cheaper to ride in cars with bike racks on the back, say three people per car. If somebody has a gas guzzling truck and it cost more, could we include that in everybodies cost, to carry more bicycles and maybe have one less car. (did I just say "one less car")
A friend of mine is having a hard time committing due to finicial restraints. If we drove there car we, equated the cost to be about $120 per person, just us two, if there was a third it would be $80-$90.
I don't mean any disrespect for posting this to Brassfuckles, Marino or drunk Borfo. I know you all have been working especially hard to put this together. I'm just thinking outside of the box we have created. This is if people can use their cars.
There is also the issue of having all these people in enclose space of a van, in which there might be no windows. I know for myself, It is going to be a bit difficult to be in the back of the van. If we will be taking a van. I will be pleading to sit in the front. Most of us are big drinkers. I know for myself that my drinking, makes me more closterphobic.
I talk with borfo, and he would be willing to take his car.
If you think this is a possible alternative. Realistically, take note what kind of kind of mileage you will be getting if you are offering up your vechicle, and caluculate the cost at say 3.30 a gallon for gas.
There is also always the train for those who where interested in that.
This is all a suggestion.
Yeah, fuck you too.

Kind of wish I was an owner-operator with a Peterbilt.

As a company driver, I gotta stick to the rules.
Not to mention the commercial vehicle enforcement getting all up in your face should a truck inspection happen.
On to the issue at hand.
I'm still wondering if I'm going to be the sole IE-guy there.

You talking about a place to meet on the way, for photo shoots and lunch and shit, or a place to meet when we're all tearfully reunited in Portland?
If you mean the former, well, if it weren't so far out of the way I'd say we stop in San Francisco somewhere for a proper lunch and some caffeine. But that ain't gonna happen. Anybody know a cool spot in Sacramento?
If the latter, well...I'm still not even clear on what time we're going to hit Portland. If we get there at 1 or 2 AM, we'll have to find a place to hunker down for the night or impose upon our hosts; if we end up camping somewhere for the first night and get there in the morning, then I dunno...get breakfast and dick around downtown until it's time to meet up with the airborne squadron (Fuzzbeast,
et al). At which point we should perhaps go and find out whether that Lucky Lab place actually has any Bike Route Rye on tap...
Or were you talking about something else?

I'm basically still on the way up there.
Essentially, I'm enroute to No-Cal today to pick up a load going into Portland. It's like a "baby-steps" thing and I'm getting paid for it too.
As far as my lodging arrangements go, the terminal I park the rig at has showers and the rig itself has two bunks inside.
For those that don't know much about the rigs flying down the freeway, it's almost like living in an RV.
Depending on what I'm picking up and how many hours I'm legally able to run, I could reach Troutdale by either late Thursday or early Friday.
Either way, the first thing I'll probably be doing before all the fun starts is hitting one of the 24Hr Fitness places downtown.
Get my usual cardio/resistance sessions in for the day.

The first thing I want to do in Portland is find their stash of Wild Blue Berries. Yummy. Wild Fruit Anyone ? And, of course some good stretching after all those hours of sitting on our butts.

Yo! If you guys are getting into town late, you could meet up at Roxy which is a great all-night diner at 1121 SW Stark St. Awesome cheap food and a punk fucking rock jukebox. Another great spot is Montage which is under the Morrison St. Bridge in SE Portland. It's a really cool Cajun-style spot and it's open till 4am. Perfect for group seating and it's cheap too! Those are my two favourite after-hour eateries in Ptown.

I won't have a place to live when I get back from Portland so I'll be bringing along a fairly large backpack to accomadate all the things I need for living, It's a Northface pack nothing huge but if anyone wants to argue about we can have a makeout fight.
Need to finish moving all my things out and find places for my bikes and then find a nice backyard to stay in tonight closer to the Van.

Hell yeah!!! Those are me old stomping grounds!! Whatever you do, keep it downtown, it's got alot better of a vibe than the burbs. I also would suggest the very bike friendly city of Davis. Davis also has a college run station that rocks the air waves.

Well, I finally got my load going up that way, so I WILL BE THERE.
Only gripe is that I have to get the trailer unloaded directly at the place I'm going to, as opposed to dropping and forgetting it.
Nonetheless, I'll link up with you guys for whatever operations are being staged.
This is also going to sound kind of old, but I'll most likely be taking public trans or riding my bike from the Troutdale terminal.
I've already got a mapquest fix on that hostel most of everyone will be shacked up at.
So if that's the rally point, cool.
If not, look for an EZ-1 recumbent, or Folding mtb that says 'HUMMER', parked outside either a gym or a JackInDaCrack.

Well, ended up getting held up in Redding, but Portland is only 430 miles from this point.
I plan on getting there finally by 1500(3PM) and parking the rig at the Troutdale terminal.
I'll be free Friday night, but I got to deliver to a local Sears on Saturday morning(I never stop working!!) which should leave me free for the remainder of the weekend to link up with the rest of y'all. Let's just hope my work doesn't send me anymore pre-plans for at least a day.
I feel like an on-call paramedic sometimes.:(

Stopped by the Kitten Shack tonight at about 9:30 PM, the LA Ridazz were off on a ride and I got mixed drunken answers about where they were and when or if they'd return.
I took it all in stride and hung out for a while before I headed back to my base in Beaverton.
Hopefully I'll see some LA Ridazz tomorrow.

I keep hearing that the rain is never, really that bad up there.
As opposed to hard rain, that light-sprinkle, foggy-mist is what tends to be up there for the most part.
As for the food, yes, the food is quite unique in this particular city.
It seems like they've got quite, an eclectic mix of tastes for vegans and carnivores alike.

Whoah, I never saw bentstrider's comment from ages ago.
The rain was definitely tolerable. Sometimes if I didn't want to deal with raingear, I just wouldn't wear it. It helped that rarely was I ever biking anywhere longer than fifteen or twenty minutes away (Portland is small!). I'd still get wet after that long, but, like, tolerably, misty-wet, not soaked to the bone wet.
The worst part about the rain isn't the intensity of any one bout. It's that it lasts for ten months out of the year. You just come to expect it. But when it's not raining? The entire city freaks out.
People freak out.
Let's go to Portland!

I never had a problem with the rain in Portland, because most of the times that it rained in the city it was dumping fresh powder on Mount Hood. Plus I was drunk.
