Friday August 17 through Sunday, August 19 - NOT INCLUDING TRAVEL TIME!




START TIME: Early



We're going to Portland. No naysayers!

The Midnight Ridazz Zeppelin of Love is, as you know, spreading. Spreading wide. Spreading wide every chance it gets. Spreading wide like a cheap, filthy, tawdry, garishly made-up, foul-mouthed...zeppelin. On a bicycle.

It has already spread in Las Vegas, in Santa Barbara, and in San Diego. Now we're taking it to Portland, Oregon, so that our bicycle brethren and cistern up there can have their way with it.

That's where you come in.

Come with us! To Portland! We're really going!

The dates for us to be in Portland have been set: Friday, August 17 through Sunday, August 19. Note that, as stated above, this does not include travel time! Depending on the method of transportation we ultimately choose (see discussion link below for the latest), this will add one or two days before and after those three days to the total travel time. A method of transportation will be chosen, and financial arrangements and reservations (if necessary) made, well in advance of our departure date.

UPDATE (7/22/07):

The question of transportation has been more or less settled for most of our travelazz: we're probably going to rent a couple of minivans, and put the bikes in a trailer or a separate pickup truck. Not the most Eco way to go, but apparently a lot of people have these "job" things that they have to go to. Don't ask me; I'm a professor of comparative literature and am consequently above such things. Want a seat in one of the vans? Don't be shy; post up in the discussion thread.

Lodging: This is also currently under discussion. Again, decisions, and arrangements for those who want and/or need them, will be made before we leave.

UPDATE (7/22/2007):

It is likely that we will be reserving approximately fifteen rooms at a backpacker's hostel in downtown Portland. A few people on the Zoobomber forum also seem amenable to putting some of us up.

A quick note regarding travel and lodging arrangements:

Some of our travelazz have already made their travel arrangements, having had prior plans to travel to Portland or frequent flyer miles to burn up, etc. That's cool, of course. But beyond that, I want to strongly encourage as many of you (us) as possible to travel and sleep together. Erm, LODGE together. That's what I meant. Honestly. A trip like this--any road trip, really--is all about conviviality, togetherness, solidarity, mutual aid, friendship (or at least pleasant mutual acquaintance), and eventual sharing of memories. Next summer when we're all telling stories about our trip, wouldn't it be nice if they were all stories about the same trip? You know what I mean? Too philosophical? Sorry. Fuck you. Come anyway.

Rides: Some of us definitely want to do Zoobomb on Sunday. Beyond that, we will partly be playing it by ear, partly going along with whatever rides are happening in Portland that weekend, and partly putting out feelers to our Portlandian friends about some rides that we can put on and invite them to (some ideas are being tossed around in the discussion thread). A couple of our confirmed travelazz are very familiar with the city and know people there. Worry not. We will ride the fuck out of our bikes up there.
