Why do you ride?

After a debate on a different website, a few people told me this would be a good topic for ridazz, so here it is.
It's pretty simple. Why do you ride?
Do you ride to clean the air?
For fitness and health?
For fun?
Because motorists are devil worshipers?
Is there something I missed?

Then again, I spent today at the LA Bike Coalition's course on advanced road riding. You wanna talk about elite core... the guy giving the class had 200,000 miles on bikes, does up to 300 miles a week...
I mean, jeez. I thought I was doing pretty good if I got 80 miles in a week. I guess the AIDS Ride training is gonna change that...
But seriously, that guy is the real elite core. Near that, I can only really count myself as "somewhat competent periphery."

i ride because i feel more alive when i do.
the best feeling in the world is plowing through fresh powder on an old beat up bike at three in the morning before any cars have had a chance to fuck it up.

I wish I was "elite/core".
Then I'd probably want to quit riding though.
I mean.........If I'm too good to ride and all.....

Because it's more fun than going to a bar.......more fun than flying a jet...............it's that 'critical mass' of people having fun with little expense..............that why................it owould be nie to have some estrogen along with me but either way......it's fun!!

I ride strictly for transportational and uber-recreational purposes.
I stay fit by doing pushups and training at the gym.
I only utilize a car when the distance is beyond 20 miles, which isn't very often.
But, riding in and of itself does make me a "core-elite", when I stack myself against an everyday user of a car.
When stacked against other cyclists, I forego that monicker and label myself, "First Prime of RARARA!!", as I blow out a car tire with my Jaffa Staff Weapon!!!

for the wind through my hair, for my pumping lungs, the broken pavement and for all the most organic and poetic reasons in the world, including smog in my face, antagonizing motorists and the beautiful smell of industry.

I ride because I hope to some day be a part of a massive civil suit against everyone who doesn't like me. That will show them.

i ride because its fun! i can ride alone, but i prefer to ride in a large group, just makes it that much more fun (thats why i joined u guys!) I also love builiding, modifying, and customizing bikes and riding them.
am i anti-cars? am i pro-bicycle? do i want clean air or to save the environment? do i hate car drivers? will i ever trade in my choppers for a fixie, track, or roadie bike? .....hhhmmmmm......

I initially starting riding because I rode the Metro everyone. I wanted to live my entire life without ever owning a gas-guzzling car.
When Metro notified everyone that they'd be raising prices, I protested. I went down to Metro's center at Union Station to voice my discontent. (With thousands of other people.) And I watched as they ignored everyone and rose prices anyway.
So I thought, "Fuck that. I don't want to contribute to this anymore." And I made it a point to get a bike by July 1st.
I finished building my first bike at the Bicycle Kitchen on July 6th. (A little late!) Since then, the quality of my life has never been better. I ride at least 12 miles a day (commuting to work), get exercise, get fresh air, and feel like I'm 8 years old all the time.
I've ridden 3 rides over 100 miles (120 miles yesterday!!!!) and am about to bike down to San Diego for the second time in 6 days. I've met some rad people through this community.
As long as I have operating legs, I'll be riding.

Good question.
For all the aforementioned reasons. Pleasure, pain, adrenalin, excitement, sense of belonging.
I sometimes find myself regretting the fact that I did not find you group of people years ago.
I have no doubt that there's a connection between riding and a feeling of elation I think we all get. It's an addiction, it's a workout, it's now, more than ever, life.

When people (drivers) bitch at you for not going fast enough, give you the finger and speed by you. Then catching up and passing them. That's the best.

I ride because I feel more better on my bike than in my car.
I like lanesplitting on my daily bike commute because it reminds drivers why wait in traffic when I can whizz through rush hour at 20 mph.
Leapfrogging the slow and inconsistent Torrance Transit bus knowing you'll beat them in three minutes during a 3 mile span route on the same busy street.
It's awesome. It also helps your lungs not that Los Angeles is the best city to help improve your lungs anyway.

I realized about four months ago that I could spend twenty minutes of dead time on my way to work. Or, I could spend forty minutes on a challenge, navigating intersections, finding better routes, and making my muscles go. I'd rather think and move for forty minutes than be dead for twenty.
In the meantime, three people at work have gotten interested in biking. One's ridden in to work several times (she and I live really close, and we plan to ride in together in the future), and two spent this past weekend looking at bikes.
But I just found out, our offices might move, to a building only two miles from my house. That's hardly a ride at all!

I just wrote a story that involved summoning demons from the Metronomicon and CycLor - Protector of Bicyclists.
CycLor appeared to me in the bike lane on sunset in a neon yellow safety vest with reflective tape and bike helmet with a light that shone brighter than the smile of a thousand babies.
I ride a bike because I don't have a car.
I don't like taking the bus because that means I have to be near a bunch of people.
When I sit in a car in traffic, I get really antsy and I feel like I might burst if I don't move.
When I ride my bike, it's like playing a game.
I like feeling the wind on my face, my blood in my veins. My heart beats like it's going to fly out of my chest and I can't get enough of this cancerous air in my lungs. My legs burn and if I don't make the yellow light coming up, I'll swear at the top of my lungs.
I ride a bike because t reminds me that I'm alive.

Can we keep this R rated? No need to let us into your private life PC. What you do with your bike is totally within your and and the bike's rights. I've fought for banana equality, I'll fight for man on bike rights if I have to. While I'm at it..... I'll fight for bike on man rights too.

Bikes bring freedom, happiness, friendship, community, clean air, + it's healthy, mentally and physically. It doesn't cost very much to own and maintain a bike. When I'm riding I get to see my city and be part of it in a way I never could in a car! I've been so happy since I started riding, there are always new places to explore, always bike adventures and bike people are the best people in the world! I ride because bikes are rad and I love it!
