This is a 100 mile, all day ride.
there will be an opportunity for others to join us in Pasadena for the last 20 miles or so.
I will post the ride with more details soon.
Yes, Tern will join us on the ride.

this will be my first Double Century Party. My longest previous Party was 128 minutes. Should I wear protection?

actually....I don't really have a good sense of what 'kinky' means. It sounds like a good thing to say about my reaction to pot, though.
But really, I bug out...a bit much. That's the facts, jack.
But, I love the slogan: "no tern unstoned!"

I just posted this ride, but here is the info. Start planning...NOW!
Tern of the Century Ride
Tern is leaving for an extended trip to the East Coast, and we’re throwing a going away ride and party for him.
Saturday, June 14
Meet at Echo Park Lake at 9:30 am (yes, am)
Roll out at 10 am sharp
We will follow the classic “Dark Century” course through Hollywood, L.A., Vernon, the L.A. River bike path, Long Beach, the San Gabriel River bike path, Duarte, Pasadena, Highland Park, Echo Park.
Kind of a daylight dark century ride.
Total distance is about 104 miles and we will be riding at a brisk clip (15-19 mph) most of the way.
At the conclusion of the ride (most likely around 8 pm), there will be a double century (200 minutes) party at a to-be-announced location. You do not have to do the ride to attend the party.
Special notes to century ridazz:
100 miles in a day on a bike is never an easy ride. No matter how fit you are or how slow we ride, it will be a major effort. If you have never ridden 100 miles in a day, and have not ridden 70 miles comfortably within the last two months, this ride is probably not for you.
We especially love first timers, but please, be prepared. We welcome everyone and we will not leave anyone behind, but for the sake of a good pace for the majority of the ridazz, seriously consider your ability to do this before committing yourself.
This being a day ride on the cusp of summer, you will need to be prepared for heat. Coat yourself with sun block and bring two full water bottles. We will make stops where you can buy more water, Gatoraid and food, but plan to be self contained. There is one 18 mile stretch and one 40 mile stretch where there will be no easy access to services.
Bring food with you. You will need to eat regularly during the ride. Bananas, Powerbars, PBJ sandwiches, cookies and M&Ms are all good. We will stop at a grocery store in Long Beach for a food break at about the 45 mile mark.
Eat a good breakfast before the ride too.
Other items to bring:
Two extra inner tubes that fit your wheels. There may or may not be blood, but there will be flats, I promise you.
A foldable extra tire that fits your wheels.
A working pump and/or enough co2 to fill two tires. The pump is the better option.
A patch kit (make sure the kit has fresh patches and the tube of glue is not dried up).
Pry bars and a multitool

Q: Can you let us know what you are planning for rest stops/refueling on this ride? i did see that one stretch is 40 miles between stops? Most supported century rides have rest/refuleing stops every 15-20 miles. By that time, most have gone through at least 1 and possibly 2 bottles depending on heat, climbing etc. I just want to have an idea of how i am going prepare for the ride.

We will make several stops for food and rest/catch up/flat repairs.
We will stop at a supermarket in east Long beach, just before the 40 mile river trail streatch and a 7-11 stop right after we get off the trail in Duarte.
There are places along the river trails where we can get stuff too, but on the past 3 century rides on this route that wasn't necessary.
10 riders signed up already, yeah! This is going to be fun!!

Yo!
Hey Tern of Arc! I was informed that my niece is turning another year older (today) and that on Saturday she will be eating cake and getting presents. I am to be in attendance, lest my sister run me over with her car. I will be on part of the ride and then venture to Whittier for familial shenanigans. Hopefully I will be able to catch you cats at Puro Luck or where ever ye shall be feasting later in the eve.

I was SO looking forward to this, but my sister is coming to visit from Toronto tomorrow, and she wants to drive to SD this weekend with me. And don't say "just bring her" cuz... she's preggers and is not supposed to ride a bike... which is reason enough for me to never have children.

Everytime I read the title, "Another Dark Century", I was always reminded of some post-apocalyptic/dystopian thriller that involved a tattered country, and some "Man With No Name" character.

There will be a ride to the party, for those of us who prefer to ride less than an eighth of a century.
First meet spot: Vermont and Wilshire Redline Metro Station 8:30pm
Ride 9pm.
Second meet spot: Vermont and Sunset Redline Metro Station 8:45pm, meet up and ride with Vermont and Wilshire group at 9:15pm.
We will stop at a liquor store on our way to the Echo Park party house so we can stock up on party victuals.
Arrive at Ridgeway at 10:00pm. Dance, drink, socialize and party.

Tif,
I sent an email to Jon to see if he wants to organize a ride from the Westside to the party Saturday night. That should be a slower ride but still it would be a good distance. Maybe you can send him a text as well. A group of us are going to meet at 8:30ish at the Vermont and Wilshire Metro station and ride towards the party about 9:00pm. Maybe you folks could rendezvous with us. The century ride sounds daunting to me, though with another year of practice I might be able to do it.
skd06.12.08 - 2:51 pm

Since when is that the westside?
I think I'm going to be riding from the actual westside.
Maybe meet at the BRW if anyone is interested. If only a couple get in contact with me though, I might just bus it for the sake of being lame.

Jaz,
Vermont and Wilshire isn’t the Westside. A Westside ride has not been organized yet.
I suggested when a Westside ride was solidified, they could possibly rendezvous with the Vermont and Wilshire ride.
skd06.12.08 - 3:06 pm

@tomato
Given the MR ride the night before, and ALC ridazz still with aches and pains, I doubt we will really maintain that pace either. Nonetheless, a century's no joke (from what I hear; this will be my first).
Also, though I don't know the route, looking at old dark century routes (which I think this is following/based upon), they don't really go west at all. So little chance to drop out along the way. But, obviously, someone else could respond with more authority.

This one is about the ride itself. As in the century.

Wow - that is a huge list. I'm starting to think that we should have a SAG vehicle = there's a reason large centuries and double centuries usually have support. The Box?
Let me be the asshole that says: long long rides with people of substantially different abilities are sometimes not fun if the group is forced to stay together. The faster people end up bored and they end up going too fast for the slower people, no matter how much they slow down. The slower people feel obligated to ride faster than they really can, and spend the ride chasing and feeling guilty. Ultimately it all ends in tears in the Disneyland parking lot.
Or maybe that's just me. I've been on both ends of that.

So, Tern, the food stop is at the Wild Oats on PCH at Second? Is that a Whole Foods now?

Google is my friend. Yes, it's a Whole Foods now. Anyway, there should still be some vegan or vegan-ish hot food available there. And smoothies.

Thanks to everyone who came out (30+ ridazz).
12 hours, too many flats to count, lots of sun and a little darkness.
What a fantastic way to spend a day!
I ran out of spoke cards but will make more this week. If you did any part of the ride and didn't get a sopke card, email me your address and I'll mail you one.
UserAl, I have your address, bro.

So, who's up for doing this route again at night?

Creative Thing,
good 2 finally meet the man behind the name. I had to work from 12-3 in newport beach at a children's birthday party dressed as spiderman with my friends batman and the pink power ranger girl (lots o fun - I made $115 +$25 for gas & a $40 tip). I got back home around 5, walked the dog, had a couple fat tires, a couple of cigarettes (bad i know) then i began calling some of you riders to see where you were at coz my goal was to meet up with you at the 20 mile mark from the end point. Thanks to my lovely cynthia for her updates on the ride. I had no clue she was on that ride and was pleasantly surprised to hear she was. I'm glad she got out there and participated in the ride, she hadn't really been on a 12 hour century (lol). I found the route on this thread and i printed it and got on my bike (left at about 6:45 and rode all the way to the santa anita race track by 8:25 and met up with you all on hunting bl (still on the race track grounds). Again thanks to my lovely cynthia for her message telling me you were going to skip colorado pl & colorado bl and head down huntington bl. the timing of that text was priceless. When i was heading down hunting bl. (not knowing if u had gone through there yet and needed to catch up to y'all. i was feeling slightly lost and discouraged when i hear the fast group yell out "Hey GOpez???" as they rolled by me. I had such a quick change of emotions at the moment. I felt like saying fuck yeah, I timed it ride, mission RENDEVOUS THE TERN OF THE CENTURY AT THE 20 MILE LEFT MARK, was a freaking success. I got a total of 40 miles (from normandie/1st to santa anita race track and back to echo park lake), that would make it 40% of 100. It was a good workout for me and i packed my bag and street clothes with spandex under layers. I was weight training too, that was an awesome 40miles. I was spent after that ride. it was a good training ride in my recovery (ankle injury) nonetheless.
Also, sorry we kinda lost you from pasadena to echo park and sorry we didn't hang out at the park in the end and also sorry we never made it to the party. We went home with a togo order of jack fruit tacos from pureluck and a six pack of fat tire and we never made back out to the party. It kinda feels like i hijacked cyn from the ride and raptured her and took her back to my den, so i apologize for missing out on the post fun. Tern I wish you had seen me in your ride, well know you know i was there for part of it. I hope you all had fun on the ride and at the party.

Thanks for putting this ride together Creative Thing and tern. The route was awesome and really enjoyed the bike trail portion of the ride. It was a great turnout and as was the group of peeps that rolled.
The after party was equally up to par. Ended with a most memorable 4am performance by our very own Funderstorm playing ON GlendaleBlvd. That means out in the middle of the street!!!! The best performance by far!
Thanks to all that made this weekend one of the best I've had in a long time.

Yeah...thanks everyone. I had a really good time. No one has ever collectively done something so cool for me to see me off. the ride and the party were so much fun.
Thanks to creative thing, marcus, and ridgeway for making Saturday a day I will never forget. Thanks to everyone who came out to ride. There were a bunch of mechanicals and flats. But, I still couldn't think of a better way to spend a Saturday. Thanks for the big card everyone. I had to fold it several times to get it into my backpack so I could ride home.
There was a wide range of abilities on the ride....thanks to those of in the front group for being patient with everyone else and waiting every so often...and thanks to those of you who made an epic journey, and put a bunch of heart into finishing this ride. Congratulations to those of you who rode their first century yesterday. You guys are the people who make me so passionate about the Dark Century...and you guys make me feel that all the routing and planning I do is something that is truly worth while. Hats off to the first time century riders!
Thanks to those of you who were agile enough with your planning to meet up with us along the way...
I was able to ride with every group during this ride....from front to back. I got to talk to everyone individually and become closer friends with you all.
I was ready for a fast bomb down Huntington to downtown for the last leg, but about a mile in, I realized I left my helmet at the last stop, and I had to turn around to get it. Luckily there were plenty of riders who were still back and waited for me, once I got my helmet. I had a great time talking with all you you guys on our way home.
Big thanks to the team ALC riders who make it out to ride....even though some of you still hadn't fully recovered from your epic ride that ended a week ago.
The party was super fun...and everyone I saw made me happy. Thanks for playing Funderstorm....there is something phenomenal about you guys....something that lets me redefine how I think about participating in music. Although I was super tired by four in the morning, I was really glad to see you play!
Thanks again, everyone.

Wanted to be there, but still tied up in paperwork as always.

Man, this was an epic century. Tons of flats/mechanicals, but still fun.
Thanks to everyone who stopped to wait for me after my wheel went cockeyed in the drop outs.
I just realized that I've done 50% of my centuries with Tern, and that I've never done a century on anything but my fixed gear.

It hurts me to type this.
I took 20+ photos, some looked pretty good, but I inadvertantly deleted them all from the camera when I was trying to download them.
Just call me Ansel Adams.
Or better yet, lets all redo the ride!

Fuck, I think zerokelvin lent a tire to one of the riders at the end one of the Dark Centuries....thanks zerokelvin. Your bike life is expensive....especially when you are giving out gator skins.
tern06.16.08 - 9:05 pm

Yeah ... no kidding, I'm not doing that again. But it helps to know how to talk to people. I know a bike clerk who gave me the tire for $22 as a token of good luck for the century. I think it was listed as $45 though.

If you haven't overwritten the memory card with new photos, you should try
