Most hostels will be in NYC, with some options immediately outside the city.
Fall's the best time, since its still warm but not annoyingly humid.
I don't really know about bike groups in NJ since I became into group rides after moving away. I think there is a bike group or two in Newark/Jersey City...a little internet searching should help us if we really wanted to plan a trip. We could base the trip in NYC and then travel into NJ since the transit options are so good.
