Maps or it didn't happen!

So you put on this bike ride, and it was really good. Maybe you came up with a theme. Maybe you made some spoke cards. Maybe you hyped it to anybody and everybody who would listen. But almost certainly, you came up with a route. You put a lot of work into that route, too. Scouting the streets, planning the stops, finding new things... You are
damned proud of that route. It made so many people happy or sweaty or drunk or whatever it was designed to do. It was a
success, and you remember it fondly.
So why not let everyone else admire your work? Post up your route maps, right here. If we were on the ride, we'll remember it fondly, too. If we weren't on the ride, maybe we'll just go out and ride it for ourselves so we can re-create that magic. Because your route is
that good.
All you have is a route slip, you say? That'll do quite nicely too. Just post it up.

Are you going to do any of these rides again? Now that I see the maps, I shoulda done some of these.

We probably won't be repeating any of those routes (at least not any time soon), but the future ones will be even better! In general, we try to keep the distance in the range of 20-22 miles with 2 or 3 short-ish stops. That seems to be about ideal if we want to get back in time for people to catch their trains.
I have to confess that I have an ulterior motive for putting out this call for maps. I'm hoping to gather together some great routes so we'll have a bunch to draw from next time we do a "cover" version of someone else's ride on The Passage of a Few People Through a Rather Brief Moment in Time. That, and I have this dream of putting together a database of all the Midnight Ridazz 2nd Friday rides ever. That would be
so hawt.
I should also mention that 3 of those routes I linked above are products of theroyalacademy's genius, lest it appear that I'm trying to take credit for everything.

Yeah I think keeping a database of the routes for a ride is a good idea, could be cool to use some open street map in there too, which as far as I have seen has the most cycling friendly online maps out there. Gmaps-Pedometer has been a good solution so far, but it would be great to not have that info on their server only.

Whoa. I just realized that the
Ride-Arc site includes a ton of their past route maps. It also includes all their brilliant announcements, notes and select photos of course, but this is the map thread, so here are the maps:
July, 2005 - "Old Towne to Downtown"
August, 2005 - "As Seen on TV"
September, 2005 - "Hustle & Flow"
October, 2005 - "Get Skool'd"
November, 2005 - "Real Deals & Wannabees"
February, 2006 - "The Sex Ride"
March, 2006 - "Human Feed"
April, 2006 - "Faith In Los Angeles"
May, 2006 - "We Built This City on Heart and Soul"
June, 2006 - "Escape from LA"
July, 2006 - "Reserved | Revealed"
August, 2006 - "Watts up with Watts?"
September, 2006 - "West-side Reprazent!"
October, 2006 - "Los Angeles Muertos"
November, 2006 - "Storm Watch 2006"
February, 2007 - "Black History in Los Angeles"
March, 2007 - "The City is My Playground"
April, 2007 - "Protest and Memory"
May, 2007 - "Terminal Beginnings" (route not public)
June, 2007 - "Valley Legend"
July, 2007 - "On the Streets:
August, 2007 - "Tourismo!!!"
October, 2007 - "On Living: A Manifesto from Mary Shelley"
November, 2007 - "Emerging Sustainability in Los Angeles"
Amazing.
At some point, I want to make a Photoshop overlay of all
these maps. That would be a beautiful thing.

We talked about making a Passage poster at one point. It seemed like a good idea.
And that's about as far as it went.
(Maybe after we get the new website done... And the book...)
(A route t-shirt is more likely.)
(We'll see.)
