Harassing The Valley Bicyclist

I am a part of a large group of bicyclist that bicycles around the San Fernando Valley weekly centered out of the NoHo Red Line Station, Last night, 8/11/2010, a large number of us bicyclist were traveling west bound on the bicycle path at Sepulveda Blvd. As usual, we use crossing guards for safety purposes as used by schools and motorcade funeral processions, and our security traffic control monitor was stopped and cited for doing his dedicated duty, for which we are all thankful.

One of our safety traffic control monitors is Pablo Zepeda, who is now "summons" into court to answer for his "crime." Last week a group of bicyclist was tailed by a police officer who broke up our bicycling group. It has become obvious that there is now afloat an effort to split up, divide and discourage bicyclist here in the Valley by police harassment.

We just cannot allow the establishment to use our our own limited tax dollars to discourage us from bicycling. I am Ron Branson, head of http://www.jail4judges.org and have for years brought suits against government for corruption and wrongdoing.

We, the citizens, must fight faithfully to preserve our rights to travel in this land by any means we see fit, whether it be for pleasure, business or exercise and health. Your comments, your advice and your offer to help in this endeavor is appreciated. I shall endeavor to direct all comments hereto toward the instant "leadership" of our bicycling group composing of upwards of 100 bicyclist.

If you can get corking to be considered a legally necessary safety activity, I think we'll all be very impressed.

Getting nicked by the PD sucks, but I think we all take that chance when we go on a ride that violates the CVC. (For example, when I ride with the peloton on Wednesdays, I know it's safer for me to stay with the group and maybe roll the red light, but I know I'm taking the risk of getting a ticket.)

If you are concerned that biased-based policing is going on in the valley, I encourage you to come to the next BAC meeting in October, where I'm sure a LAPD rep will be there, and you could discuss this issue with him. The LAPD has been very receptive and willing to work with us lately, and we need them to be so, particularly to help us find and prosecute those who injure cyclists with their vehicles.

Sounds like a bunch of candy coated dressed up fancy wording for "CORKING" which is completely illegal, and those on the ride should learn to split up and those ahead should STOP and wait for the rest of the group stuck at the light.

Running a red light is just stupid unless you're paying good close fucking attention.

I still think that this could be resolved discussing with Sgt Krumer. Of course, breaking traffic code will never go over, but maybe we can get to an "understanding" like LACM has done.

Do you want the cops to ignore all rides?

There are quite a few rides that happen ever night. I just don't see how you can justify the special treatment..

Bicyclists are trying to get attention to be treated fairly and have motorists obey CVC yet we are asking to cork our rides.

Hello Ridazz!!! 

Corking has been the subject of much internal discussion at the LAPD. While we can appreciate the motive of "corkers" is to add an element of safety...the Department's position is that the safest practice is to stop at all red/stops like every other vehicle on the road. If you decide to cork you do so at the risk of being cited.

This position is not meant to discourage cycling...but the opposite. The LAPD believes that cyclists belong on the road...and thus must follow it's rules. We whole heartedly reject the notion that people will be discouraged from cycling if the law is applied to them.

I will be monitoring this forum for your comments and concerns and will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
