the dark century: fall '08
Thread started by
tern at 09.11.08 - 7:17 pm
I just took my cast off, and I'm feeling like doing this. We need to get into shape for a phenomenally fast century this November...and we will do it right.
Who has a prospective date? Who has a moon calendar?
reply
For this Dark Century, we will be doing what we have always done. We will be a group of riders of varying skill levels. And, we will ride an urban century at night. The special aspect of this autumn dark century is the fact that it gives riders a chance to put in some miles, and get into better shape for the Wolfpack All City Century 2, which will be coming up in November.
Again, this dark century is for riders of all levels capable of riding 100 miles at night. But, there will be a certain group who will take the front as a trainer for the Wolfpack Century in November.
Who wants to go?

I'm in as well, but I'm wondering- what are stops/ rests like? (How often/ long) I can definitely say that I've done at least 40 in a night, I'm just wondering what kind of pacing goes along with a century.

We will naturally fall into groups. We will have faster, experienced riders and we will have slower riders who have never done a hundred miles. A road bike is strongly recommended for this ride.
Things to bring:
Front and rear lights are an absolute must..
Two extra tubes.
food-energy bars
water
tools (allen wrenches, tire levers etc.)
a tire pump (or co2 canisters)
If you are riding fixed, bring a wrench for track nuts
If you are riding a mountain bike or a bike with anything other than 700s (like 26" or 27" tires)--you should bring a backup foldable tire in addition to the two tubes that fit your wheels.
(bringing an extra foldable tire is a good idea...no matter what size tire you have.)

I hope the date works for everyone. I know it is less than a month away, but if you have some doubt whether or not you can make the ride, I will make sure that you have every opportuinty to get ready. I will be posting 40 mile, 50 mile, and metric century training rides later today.

I just changed it to October 18th. On October 11, there is an art opening featuring one of our riders who has been a huge part of all five dark century rides. One of his pieces was inspired by the dark centrury. Also, other bike people we know are showing art there....and this is the opening. So, we are riding on the 18th...and we will make a quick stop by the gallery (about 3 miles away from Union Station) to see the bike art.) And, that leaves open the prospective dates for the Wolf Pack 2nd anniversary century

just get the mileage up, right away. Start out getting comfortable with 30 miles. Then, come on the DC40. Maybe, after that you can stretch the mileage a bit more on your own before DarkCen metric. If you keep you distance riding up two or three times a week, you will be fine on the metric. And, If you are fine on the metric, you WILL be able to make the century without any major problems. You'll be fine if you start to ride longer distances.

If anyone is interested, I start work at four tomorrow and thought I would take the morning to train. I'm leaving downtown PICO?HOPE at 7:30am and riding to huntington beach and back via lA River than ocean drive and then pch. Round trip should be close to 45-50miles. I'm riding fixed.

30's no problem, I'm used to doing that over the weekend x2 for Friday + Saturday rides... I'm just afraid of pacing and stops? I guess? Not sure. It should be okay.

I plan 1 stop in Long Beach at the light house where there is a snack shop, and another stop in huntington beach at PCH and Warner AMPM gas station. then back to LB. Stop at the snack shack stretch and back on the La River trail back to Pico Ana hope. Depending on how we feel we can take another stop.

Well, seeing as how often the surprise runs have been getting attached, I'm going to force myself to be relieved of duty to make this one.
I've already been hitting the gym and as far as the other rides are concerned, 15-30 miles aren't shit to me.

Mindfull: I can ride with you Saturday, Oct. 4 in the morning.
Ima: Lots of miles. Work up to being comfortable over 70 miles and you'll be good to go. With 3 weeks to the ride, try a 50 mile ride this week and a 70 mile ride next week. Take it easy the week leading up to the ride. Any miles then will only make you tired with no benefit on Century day.
Don't push your knee too much. If you can't do the 50 and 70 now, the century ride will be hell. Keep training and we will do this ride again before too long.
Water is always important, but on a night century, not as important as when its hot. Nutrition is key. You gotta eat. We will make regular stops for that.

The dark century training scheduled for October 4th will start in Hollywood and head into the valley via the cahuenga pass, but we turn and head to griffith park via Barham and forest lawn drive.
This ride will be short but semi hard and the primary focus of this training ride is to hit the hills and enjoy the downhills.

Our first break will place us near coldstone creamery.
Our second break could fulfill the yogurt lovers with pink berry being just a stones throw away.
Our last and final stop...the end all be all, will place us a block away from 31 flavors of yummylicious choices.
Disclaimer: Any one brave enough to eat ice cream before the end of this ride is advised to bring a brown paper bag and ride on the right hand side at all times..LOL

Count me out. :(
Messing up my knee set back lots of training, so now I'm afraid I'll hurt myself if I even attempt 70.
My aunt and her husband will be there. Show them some love! :)

Many fixie ridazz have done this in the past.
The complaints I have heard were about tired legs and sore glutes.
If you're strong on long rides and have some decent TITS (Time In The Saddle) You will be fine.

I haven't prepared for this at all, but I'm gonna try to come out anyway. I've been too lazy with my legs lately, and it feels like a century would do them some good.

Can somebody post the route, or at least what the first Hollywood or Mid-Wilshire stop will be? I need to get a tire at Orange 20 and I probably won't make Union Station in time. I'm sure I can meet the first stop any time after 7:30 or so.
Thanks!

Anyways I wanted to credit Drew, Wyne, Leslie, Rich, and Mark for being great organizers / team players for the ride. It needs to be said you guys do a awesome job keeping the ride in working order while the rest of us are thinking "100 miles ... that's a great idea!".
Take care guys and gals. Bananas FTW!

I am also totally wired for some reason, about 3 hours of sleep right now and trying to figure out how productive I can be before I bonk again!
Thanks everyone for a kickass ride...I wish we could do this *every* weekend (but with less flats!)
Big thanks to Drew, Wayne, Leslie, and Mark for being leaders and knowing where to take us!

Thanks to everyone who came out.
We had 24 starters and 21 or 22 finishers.
We almost beat the sun this time.
11 hours on the road, but about 4 of them were spent off the bikes.

rich, me, and.... dammit forgot his name.. beat the sun! :D In the next century.. lets do that sick paceline again!!! 22-27 mph for 18 miles straight... fun fun. ...Mark? i think thats your name.. that was hauling ass right behind us with a masi fixed? I cant imagine you jumping on a geared bike.. super fast o_o

That was fun! Such a good group of people! Even a miniature dance party on top of the little dam! (Too bad my tire was slowly flatting while it happened.) (Also too bad that my knee hurts a lot more now that I no longer have the motivation of getting out of the cold and into the Denny's.) Nonetheless, yes, yes fun! And, yeah, I would say that 2/3 of the ride beat the sun.

Ah, awesome...probably my fave century evar! The only bad parts were the ass-freezing at the last few stops...and i seem to have injured the tendon that helps me lift my right leg...walking is excruciating at the moment. At least I only have to wait tables for 4 more hours :)
THANKS DREW!!!! Thanks Leslie, particularly for pulling me from the top of the LA river path all the way to the front pack so we could be part of that über-sick little paceline down to LB. Thanks everybody for coming and sharing the ride - i hope some of you will ride with us down to oceanside in a couple weeks!!
