Corking a Left Turn at Big Intersection?

I'm an out of towner who hosts a social ride. I've been inspired by the bike scene I've seen in LA.
I'm trying to see if I can get any help with this question.
I understand the limitations, etc., of corking. We use it sometimes and it works well for us and our local drivers. There's good trust and we don't push their patience.
But we get confused at big left-turns at multi-light intersections. Like, 5-laners -- 2 each way plus a turn lane.
The problem seems to be that we don't know what the next light to turn will be. So we don't know where to stand to control. The drivers like it when we make it clear to them. They want us to know what we're doing. When we do, it works like a charm. (Last year out of 50 rides we got one mean honk, maybe. That's how good.)
We only run into these tricky lefts a few times a season.
Is there any general approach to complex lefts? ...Maybe there's a link to info or graphics out there? THANKS!!!
