Thread Box:
Crank Mob Taggers?
Thread started by Rogue Rida at 07.21.08 - 6:46 pm

I just got back from the Vons on Centinella & Washington. As I was riding through, I saw on the ground drawn in chalk a outline of a bike with a caption "I love my bicycle". I thought, awe, nice. Then, I look up and I see some crappy ass tagging of someone laying down "Crank Mob". WTF... More proof of idiots clinging to genius.
Seeing the poorly executed crap on the wall gave me a bad vibe of Crank Mob. I know what Crank Mob represents and I enjoy what they are about. I also doubt it was anyone actually "Core Elite" C-Mob. But it makes me wonder what goes through others minds as they witness the creation of crap? I think I & we need to confront people we see delivering such poor actions within the groups we create. Nothing vigilante or aggressive, I just think they need to be aware they are mis-representing and we want no part of who or what they are about.

Using spray cans to create art is one thing. Using spray cans to create crap is another. One can only take so much.

I agree, if you are going to use paint make it worth it.

This really hits home for me.
In 1989, my friend Kent Twitchell, the mural painter, asked me to model for one of the figures in his L.A. Marathon Mural. The mural, on the 5 freeway near Stadium Way, has been heavly tagged as far up as the hand can reach. It makes me sick every time I pass it.
I love public art, but that tagging shit sucks.
Defacing buildings that we don't own will only draw the cops attention to our activities in a negative way. Why would we do this to ourselves?

art in general is bullshit, but when its created with a spraycan its like, elephant shit, or something.
the only time grafitti is ok at crank mob is when we stop at 33 1/3 and they let you paint over everything behind the store. we did that in february and it was pretty lame. go figure.

Yay!

Let's just come up with rules denying anyone the ability to act of their own accord because someone has a problem with it?

We could make a religion, where dogma, through the use of social humiliation is the key.

Seriously people, man the fuck up, stop bitching about shit, either put a stop to it yourself, or stfu.

I'm sick of reading these idealic posts about "can we stop doing this?" I'm sick of being told by an internet face that things I very well could enjoy, aren't to be tolerated anymore. Just because most people suck at tagging, doesn't mean there isn't enjoyment that can be gained from the simple act?

So fuck it, reclaim the streets. Tag everything with every bike related tag you could think of, Critical Mass, Crank Mob, TWBG, Crimanimalz, Midnight Ridazz, etcetcetc.

Anti-bitch ride will be planned for when I'm back in town. Where if you bitch, you get dropkicked by a goat. (Jaz reserves all rights regarding the use of any goat on any ride)

stfu, let's just have fun riding bikes.

Art is subjective as already mentioned. So you claiming, or anyone else claiming it's not art, or artistic has no validity in an argument.

So hate to break it to you, but art is whatever someone defines as art.

Look at duchamp's readymades. Now of course you could bring about the argument that certain techniques to validate their origins have been used, and determined that the items he created have no duplicates, and possibly were created by duchamp himself.

Basically, everything is art, and is artistic, just because you don't like it, or someone else dislikes it, doesn't make it, not art.

Plus stfu. WHat does it matter if it's art or not?

Jaz
07.21.08 - 8:18 pm

This sucks for lots of reasons, regardless of whether or not anyone considers it art. Given the shoplifting and the tagging that happened at the Vons, how welcoming do you think the store will be to any large groups of bikers that might show up in their parking lot in the future? Vons being a chain, word will get around. How welcoming do you think their other stores will be once that happens?

Yes, art is subjective. Store owners' ability to refuse service to cyclists, or to kick them off the property, is unfortunately much less subjective. Tagging a Vons with "Crank Mob" is just self-evidently stupid, for reasons that have little to do with ideology and everything to do with the tangible effects on the group. If I had seen someone doing that, I would have called them out.

And I like graffiti. I organized the Tour de Graf to showcase some of the city's best graffiti during Bikesummer '05. And I appreciate that Ridazz history is steeped in graffiti. This site is based off of 50mm. There have been a couple different rides that incorporated graffiti in one way or another. Hell, I think the Ridazz logo was even inspired by a piece of graffiti. So yeah, graffiti has its place. But that place is not the side of a fucking Vons during Crank Mob.

I'll say this online, and I'll say the same thing in person to whoever did this: Crank Mob is not a graf crew, and your toy-ass shit doesn't make you or Crank Mob any more interesting or rebellious. All that it does is make the world more hostile toward our community, and we have a right to be pissed off at you for that.

And that gets right to the heart of the matter. The graf culture has its own code of honor, which you seem to accept without question (or were you being ironic?). Is it really so hard to consider that the bike culture might have its own set of acceptable behaviors?

I'm no expert on the matter of graffiti, but I did see a documentary on it once. One of the things I learned from the experts around the world was that nobody's first tag looks good, but you just gotta have the balls to start somewhere and keep developing your style as an artist. There wouldn't be any good looking graffiti if there wasn't bad graffiti. So either you condemn it all or you encourage the learners to learn from their mistakes.

To me, the argument over whether or not this was Art seems to be completely beside the point. I'm all in favor of reclaiming the public space. I think one of the main things that makes the bicycle culture so great is its ability to transform the boring sameness that covers much of this city into something interesting and new. Maybe you can frame an argument that the tag in question was a brilliant piece of art, on par with Duchamp in its breathtaking originality. But winning some Dadaist conceptual battle is pretty meaningless if the ultimate consequence for the group is negative. It may be a success in your head, but unfortunately nowhere else.

People can hone their graf skills on their own time, or, at the very least, under their own name. Doing it under the blanket of Crank Mob is weak, in every sense of the word. I know that whoever threw up that tag probably did it with great enthusiasm and much love for Crank Mob, but that doesn't make it a good idea. Even if the tag had been skillfully done, it would have pissed off the store owners just as much and made them just as hostile toward future rides.

And regarding the hand-waving about jack-booted thugs repressing individuals with their talk of rules and regulations, I don't think anyone here is interested in persecuting people. At least, I'm not. Ridazz should not be in the business of burning bridges, either with fellow riders or with convenience stores. We all make mistakes, but when they impact the whole group, we still need to find ways to avoid those mistakes in the future. If this could just happen through some unspoken code, that would be great, but as it is, we need to talk to the people who are doing the damage.

All I want to do is try to make sure nobody fucks anything up in some irrevocable way. If Ridazz get banned from stores due to stupid little transgressions by a few individuals, it would be a pity, to say the least. There's that old adage about not shitting where you eat, and it applies here, in spades.

I've hammered away at this enough, so I think I'm done with this thread. Maybe we just need to wait until wintertime, and all this will fall away into the annals of meaningless internet drama.

All the outrage over a little writing. Maybe some people weren't breast fed?

Art is art. You try and define it and all you do is define yourself as "the man" who restricts someone else's vision. Sure, it may not come through as beautiful, but does that make it any less art? And the comment that the ultimate outcome will negatively affect the scene...what about Crimanimals?? There were more then a small handful of people that were totally against what they did. It was performance art fueled by their want for a social change. Now they're getting good PR for it. Just because you THINK it's bad, doesn't mean it is.

And assuming it's going to piss off the owner of that Vons is probably dead on They probably all get together in some secret underground lair to plot against the Ralph's and Albertson's as well and discuss "those damned cyclists". Has anyone seen this boardroom where "The Vons" get together and plot against the world and start up tomato-ecoli threats to increase other produce sales?? I MUST SEE IT!! Ok, in all honesty, who's to say the owner isn't a writer or an ex-writer him/herself? Living in LA, I've already accepted graf as art, whether I think it's amazing or lame. It's not up to me to decide unless I plan on writing over it to show them something better. Yes- show respect for other art/murals out there, don't write over someone elses piece, and I probably wouldn't rep for something unless I planned on doing it justice. Sounds like people are more pissed that it wasn't up to their standards which means "the man" is upset.

I saw a Mom Ridaz tag on Ventura near the Universal City area. Anyone claiming that? Just curious.

I personally think that if your going to be writing on the rides, don't be stupid about it.

Handle it where NOBODY is gonna notice you doing it or notice that its even there in the first place (small little tags, nothing huge, no fat cap tag on the 711 walls and places like that).

BE A NINJA, its simple and yes you can do it! and if its really all that hard maybe writing just isn't for you. BE HUMBLE about it, respect yourself and the people on the rides.

There are many hours in the day and many days in the year to write, so for those few hours on the rides take a little time off the writing, but if you really cant help it again just be stealthy about it.

If you guys see someone writing on the rides don't give them a verbal lashing and start calling them out in front of everyone. Take them aside and come at them level headed, tell them your point of view and try to reason with them, they WILL understand no matter what. People writing are intimidating its true and bystanders don't really know how to deal with it, first its kind of a shock to see someone doing it but once you start to really talk to them about it you realize that they are just like you, only thing is that they need guidance and to know their limits. You can help.

Ok, well that agreement had to do with financial gains. How would shunning us result in financial gains when any time a ride stops, I'd guess the average receipt would be between 3 and 15 dollars a person at a time when foot traffic is at its slowest?

"Your right to paint art ends at someone else is property. That is consider vandalism."

Yeah, I guess vandalism is the only law we break.

Besides open intox, driving/riding drunk, possession of illegal narcotics, trespassing, countless traffic violations, underage drinking, supplying to minors, noise violations, as well as numerous others. Very few of those violations have to do with any artistic reasoning behind them, but we turn a blind eye to them. And I wouldn't compare a possible physical violence to graf.

"It's not complaining about tagging. It's complaining about tagging during the rides which brings unwanted attention to the group."

yes yes yes. unfortunately that kind of reasonable logic is over a lot of these kid's heads LOL. BELIEVE I'm all for as nathan said "taking back the public space" but there is a time and place for it and unfortunately not everyone on the ride is bright enough to understand that and may never, so they have to be told.... this is a bicycle ride. BICYCLE RIDE. not a graffiti or a shoplifting expedition it's a BICYCLE ride. how come the veteran graf riders who ride on these rides get it and the new jacks don't??

the issues are simple. if we want to continue to ride in groups and have fun then we have to do what we can to stay under the cop's and community's radar. SIMPLE CONCEPT! we get too much attention from the cops as is for all of the laws that currently are being broken. real simple, we DON'T want to ratchet up the attention from the cops and community any more than necessary! especially if it has NOTHING to do with riding bikes!

graffiti, whether you think it's art or not, IS going to bring MORE unwanted attention from cops than we already have. why exacerbate the situation with something that in the big picture is not related to riding bikes. show some class and restrain yourselves... focus on the bike riding and friendships... it's hard not to want to take advantage of the cover that the group provides I KNOW I've slipped up here and there myself.... mind you this is coming from a guy who put in more work on the streets than most of these newjack graf writers combined. REAL SHIT.

Not financial gains. Loss prevention.

It like certain people in life. They have some good things to offer, but they might have that bad thing, that makes you not want to be around them. We might bring some business, but if we are stealing or causing damage to property we won't be welcomed.

Noise Violations might be something we do that effects peoples peace, and maybe we might want to consider the neighbors of the areas we ride through. For some time we didn't go through skid row any more because people living on the streets down there made mention to me, that "people are sleeping here". I told everybody about it and consciously or unconsciously people stop taking rides into the area where people where sleep on the street, so not to wake them up. Them on Skid Row life's are hard enough. All the other things are consider consensual crimes. Meaning it doesn't harm anyone else. Graffiti is ruining someones property, where they will have to lose money to repair i.e repaint the property.

How would you compare vandalism to violence? they are two different things. The analogy I made is to show that you can do something as long as it doesn't effect someone else negatively. No graffiti is not violence, but it is not acceptable to swing your fist into someone face, just as it is not acceptable to paint on someone property without their consent or request.

No thats not true, unless you are coming at them in a disrespectful manner. Thats another thing though, people in general not just taggers get disrespected VERY easily, especially in los angeles.

We all need to up our COMMUNICATION SKILLS, seriously. Its easy to be retarded and start throwing blows at each other but it takes a real well educated man or woman to stand up and talk that shit out. Most of the time fights go down its completely unnecessary and can damn well be talked out. People just don't want to take the time cause it WILL hurt their EGO.

KILL YOUR EGO AND GIVE BIRTH TO MORE COMMUNICATION.

RBI - What if they give you a hug, a beer and a dozen long stem roses? You're assuming a writer is an aggressive punk.

I'm in agreement here, RB. The thread was more of a complaint about misrepresentation of CM then the act it self, to start anyways. It's probably safe to say that the CM tag was thrown up during one and it probably shouldn't have. The thread turned into a bashing and definition of it as an art form, rather then the appropriateness of the act while on a ride. As an artist I take notice to that and feel defending art for arts sake is as worthy a cause as cyclists rights. Dat's all. I personally wouldn't write while on a ride because I have better things to do, like you said.

sexy - Consensual crimes? DUI is consensual how when someone hits another person? Traffic violations? (we have seen other forums and letters complaining about sitting at lights while we cork them) Trespassing? (plenty of rides pull into places past posted hours, ect) I'm just saying, don't condemn one act when we do just as many that are way more dangerous not to just us, but to other people not involved.

There is no end to this discussion, it seems.
stealing beer
stealing other people's stuff
tagging
destroying things

Doing these things take away from the ride for everyone.
Let's keep the rides going, and focus on riding and having fun with friends.
It's pretty simple.

we've been getting away with a certain level of lawlessness for years and that is not by mistake. it is because people over the years have taken the time and energy to cultivate a certain level of respect for the community AND for the police to off set the lawlessness. its been working pretty good so far. we have a lot of freedoms to fuck around! quit fuckin with the formula. keep the FUN going.

Out of sight, out of mind has never been a philosophy I have felt ok with. If I do not voice my concern, one in which others have agreed with, then perhaps the concern might not have come up, and as such, there would be no possible consideration of others.

So by shutting up and not reading and replying I am affecting hurting myself.

Thus, sorry, but I can't do that.

Then quit complaining when others voice their concerns.

I agree with everyone on both sides of the issue! Two missing points- I think it’s silly to worry about the longevity of a ride (or “all” rides); CRANK Mob was born out of the police crack down on SMCM. There will always be something FUN to do, I promise. And, to be concerned with what other people think of you is ridiculous. It’s none of your business! There will always be people that love you and hate you for everything you do.

Alec...you are such a big part of us....not that you want to be in a group. I respect you fully. And, I understand what you are saying, I think. I don't try to police rides. Have you ever seen me doing that? The answer is: no. I have just had a different experience on rides in the last few months. I hate the fact that I have to worry about rollers picking up more trash than he ever has. And, I am a bit concerned because the negative police activity has ramped up. I ride your ride. I ride MR. But, I don't ride CM, because having interactions with police isn't my idea of fun, when I'm riding with people. I don't know what the solution is. But, I have had a bunch of fun, without being bugged by cops over the last couple of years.

I understand that you think there is absolutely no issue at hand. Cool. I think you might have a point. But, I don't like dealing with cops. That's just about it.

I mean, look at it this way, maybe. In the couple of years that I have been involved in palnning and riding rides like this, there has been some give and take with us and the cops. This ideal situation seems to be vanishing. I might be wrong, but I have been out there riding, and helping and planning. I like to get my party on without a hassle. So, arguing against stealing stuff, destroying stuff, and tagging up stops on the rides is my best way to keep what I think is an amazing thing going for the future.

Most people are only concerned for their own personal "FUN", that it becomes too hard to see how their "FUN" affects others. By the time they realized the damaged done by their "FUN", its too fucking late to fix it.
It's sad to see MR being associated with a "Fuck You", "Its all about me" attituded. We are a community, a family. I've always treated my family with respect. Sometimes people need to vent. Listen, even if you don't agree. I don't see whiners, I see people concerned about their family.

THE JOY I GET FROM TAGGING SUPERCEDES THE JOY HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE GET FROM RIDING IN CRANK MOB WITHOUT NEGATIVE ATTENTION FROM POLICE. LOL!

You want to express yourself by tagging? Great, do it at a time and place where people who don't want to be associated with it don't have to be. Don't force your world-view on others, and don't force others to endure the negative consequences of your vandalism. Running a red light with a group of people and vandalism aren't the same thing. We're not talking about breaking laws on an absolute scale here, we're talking about the wishes and desires of a few people being projected on an entire group.

The incredible sense of freedom and social subversion is what a lot of people enjoy on these rides, please don't do anything that may jeapordize this freedom. In other words, don't let your freedom to express yourself inhibit our ability to express ours.

All of you are really cool people and it's important not to come down too hard on people who make mistakes. Don't sweat the small stuff, but let's keep others in mind on these rides to maximize F.U.N.
