I just wanted to float this out there.
There's a movie playing at Farmlab regarding the Salton See. This movie looks awesome and it gave me an excellent idea. Why not study up on the Salton sea and do a three day trip!!! Yeah, how many have seen all the oddball stuff out there? Me neither! That's why we got to do this? Invite the kids from SD, invite the kids from......... ummmm...... well you guys think about that! I know a three day, less than 40 miles a day trip around the see is doable! This leaves plenty of time to wonder off and sea the highlights.
Other than dead fish and salt and abandoned things, what is there to see there? I am interested but cant find anything of particular interest about it (other than dead fish and salt and abandoned things, which are of particular interest).
Alan, Towliesbong, and whoever else is interested:
I'm thinking about planning a trip to the Salton Sea and Slab City in February if you're interested in joining. I've got a couple others interested so far. I plan on driving out to a spot and camp and then do rides out on our bikes. I'm thinking maybe a two nigher or so... We just pack light, camp, eat chili, visit Salvation Mountain, ride, ride, ride, etc.
This trip could very well be a burning man test trip. we should build an abreviated version of our camp, and go from there. Ive been wanting to go to Slab City & Salvation Mountain for a long-long time.
I'll be leaving in the afternoon, or as early as possible on that Friday. I want to get our base camp set up early. I don't want to waste time doing that in the dark. There will be different carpool schedules- So I'm sure it will all work out.
I'm in and I can drive! There is for 3 people and 3 bikes since I'll just be there to camp! yay! dead stuff and nothingness!! I don't mind leaving later for the people who have to work.
Sounds nice.
My type of territory, barren, used and over-all, inhospitable.
What am I saying, I've only been raised in that type of environment for the last 20 years.
W00t! We've got most of Tren Way Beer Gang going now, some other Ridazz and cacophonists. Rev. Dak is right. This will be a good primer for those going to Corporate Man, .. oh I mean Black Rock City.
Pretty much the best time to go is March/April. After April it's too hot and stinks really bad. I'm down to ride and I know a few SD kids would be also. Just make sure it's not the same weekend as the coachella music festival...
I'm up for this partner! So what is this going to be? Camping/biking trip to one location? Scouting trip for a future ride around the See?
I have a video I'm hoping we could show some time. We went to the Farmlab and saw this presentation,
http://farmlab.org/2007/04/farmlab-public-salon-plagues-pleasures.html
It would be cool to show this to people that is interested in this trip and the trip around the See. There's a shit load of characters out there and an equal amount of shit load of stuff to checkout.
I talked to one of the film producers that came to the farmlab. He said he would be glad to help us out for places to go and hooking us up with the people. He would be able to give them a heads up on us coming.
Also if you look at the myspace page for slab city, you'll see that something goes off there at the end of January. Would be cool to see what slab city has planned in the next couple of months, no?
Also if anyone is still reading this, I can drive out there and have room for two-three other people and their bikes. I'll probably be leaving early Friday.
Let's make the date tentative and plan it on what we find out is going on in slab city? Assuming of course, something is planned there.
My plan is we camp in Slab City a.k.a. Niland, about two miles south of the Salton Sea. I would like to make contacts. I would like to watch that movie before we go. Perhaps at the G.J.B.C.? (see doo dah thread)
yes. thats the idea. We all help each other out of course. It wont be very diffiult. A looking for a lead to get a large Parachute to make a camp. And Ideas?
I shit you not, that's verbatim from the Salton Sea State Recreational Area website.
I think a better question is:
What awesomeness can be performed by having internet access at Salton Sea?
i.e. First ever MR @ Salton Sea live internet broadcast.
OR
Let those that stay home from this trip DJ the music from their computers.......we're at the mercy of the Salton Sea, why not be at the mercy of the ridazz music selection?
@user1 - never been there, just speaking from accounts of friends and pictures, but despite the laundry list of jack shit out there, it's really beautiful.........whereas slab city, while inhabited, looks unappealing, small and without much to explore that has not already by mapped and explored for you.
215 mile bike ride to Slab City. I am leaving 8am Monday Feb 11th. plus/minus one day. 70-100 miles per day. Self-accomodations, I am bringing enough to crash outside somewhere. Post here if you're interested!
Y E E H A W
"whereas slab city, while inhabited, looks unappealing, small and without much to explore"
I think I may do a recon trip out there this weekend on the way home from Vegas and the proto sites. I'm thinking Vegas, Laughlin, Amboy, Joshua Tree, Salton Sea. I prefer primitive camping, no authorities, no crowds, and with a high ratio of bike reachable explorable areas nearby. If I do make the detour south to the Salton Sea I will objectively report, I will not lobby for any particular camp location.
it's on the calender, but it's not really in your face. It's going to be a unique experience I guarantee. Camping will provide no accommodations but for what you bring with you and what you and others choose to share and give each other in the middle of nowhere. No need to go overboard on supplies. Just make sure you bring enough water and I will be asking for help for people to chip in for the large amounts of FIREWOOD and BEER that I will be bringing to our "Camp". And bring your Bikes , of course.
I was looking at my books on hot springs and there is several there. There are springs at these RV parks and found one reference on a natural one. I believe this is dried up as this forum here states. RV ones I think we want to stay away from, yes?
Send me requests on what you'd like me to check out on my recon mission. I'm definitely going to scope out the roads and Slab City (and any alternative camp spots) on Tuesday focusing on the east side of the sea.
I understand the concept of recon work, but what happen to exploring? :-/
I'm all for stopping everyone for wasting time but........ will this impeded on my mission to explore? How bout my mission to climb the mountain god told me to go climb?
Definitely not. I just want to offer up info on camping spots and road conditions. If you don't want me to check out the hot springs that may or may not be dried up let know. I'm fine either way.
the only thing we really need to scout out is where we will be building camp / headquarters... and maybe basic routes & road conditions. I'm thinking mountain & comfort bikes will be best in this area.
"the only thing we really need to scout out is where we will be building camp / headquarters... and maybe basic routes & road conditions. I'm thinking mountain & comfort bikes will be best in this area. "
Yep. That's why I want to scope because I'm thinking about throwing my fattest tires on my Motobecane. I haven't pulled out my mtn bike in months and don't feel like dusting the cobwebs off of it til summer.
I'll take a picture or two but that's it. I agree with User1 about leaving the exploring until later so I'll be just checking out road conditions.
we still need to scout out Slab City, and find a suitable place to camp, that is accessible to the main road AND how to direct people that show up later how to get there. know what I'm sayin?
I will make a list of cars and spaces for people interested in carpooling out there. If you want, start the list yourself and ask people to help pay for gas. I'm heading out early Friday to start building the camp. People need to work together to figure out how to get out there and back. Thanks for your active willingness to be a participant riss! More details on the exact coordinates of the camp area, road conditions, needed supplies and other essential info to come very soon!

Theres Nothing quite like a Familly of Midnight Ridazz hanging on beach chairs around a rotting lake, with no laws, hot springs, weirdos, tweakers, artists, and A WHO KNOWS WHAT ELSE??>>>........
So far I have skano in the car which leaves room for 2 more...and I dont know what kind of tires I will need for my bike, cause uhh I dont have no otha ride
I just got back from 4 days of gambling and riding in the lo desert (somebody kidnapped Blackjack but that's another story entirely) including a very short visit to Slab City.
I'm bringing my fixed gear with 25mm tires but I'm kind of weird that way. The roads are crunchy.
The southeast corner of Slab City up against the canal is pretty empty right now and late arrivers would be able to find camp easily and we could be loud over there. Plenty of bushy trees for shade.
Or the bunkers around the base of Salvation Mountain are very trippy and there were only two motorhomes camped in these lowlands. Camp would be very easy to find here and you'd wake up with a glorious view of Salvation Mountain every day.
fuck, i knew i'd forget something. i saw lots of cell towers, though. i have a feeling there's pretty good coverage since it's so flat there.
oh, yeah, there is a community bulletin board right out in front of the slab city church. worse comes to worse, someone can put a note up there.
and, no, I don't think Blackjack was eaten, someone had camped not 20 yards from where I left him, I'm pretty sure he was catburgled, i'm going to put a lost cat poster out there next time, trip out the locals.
Rev Dak, myself, and some others are going to do a quick second Recon on Friday just for the hell of it. Is there anything I can do to help find blackjack?
I'm actually going to use that cutout as the lost cat poster. Empty space and all that, hahahah. But, no, no need to look for him, Blackjack was left about 180 miles north of Slab City.
The only thing left of Toddler kicking the bucket is his foot. I'm going to have to refurbish him before the Poker Ride.
CRANK MOB=FEB 16TH!!!
i have been debating this one, and still am. of course many on this thread will swear on this road trip. but the funnest ride i've ever been on is CRANK MOB, and i say that every month...
...but the sea isnt going anywhere, either. its just a tough call for me and anyone else that is into CRANK MOB. not trying to change people's minds. just reminding them. thats all.
Marcus makes a compelling argument. Why go out of town and get drunk with a bunch of strangers when you can get drunk here at home? And besides where're ya gona find a $30,000 air conditioning unit to bash in in the desert? Huh? Answer that one!
Man who wants to miss what Crank Mob will be doing next month?
_i am not trying to dissuade anyone from this trip. fucking go!
_you werent there, stop hating on things you know of via second hand info.
_i was planning on going earlier via riding my bike. if i can leave in time, i will make it there even earlier and put up a CRANK MOB flag and return for the ride. that way you wont need the internet to find something to hate on.
Bike love! Ain't no thing but a chicken wing, yo! Two awesome events in one weekend to choose from.......What the fuck more could the bike community ask for?
....okay, I mean, I can think of a lot of things, but you get my point.
I don't have problem with Crank Mob. I'd would have gone to the all the previous ones if I could have. I'm also sorry this wasn't planned out better, but there's nothing I can do about it. I hope you have fun whatever you do. I support FUN..
Allan is annoying as fuck but that's what he's good at. We just need to channel his skills to proper use and annoy the fuck out of more appropriate targets. More To Come...
Joe I've had my enema already today, but thanks for your concern.
Getting back on track on with this trip......
I'm going through my crap that I don't wear anymore and one of the things I got is a TWBG bicycle vest. Yeah I can't be associated with such an outlaw bike gang anymore. So what I'm doing is giving it to the folks at Slab City. I'll be bringing a bunch of other coats and jackets I don't wear anymore too.
Hahaha, goin down to stink town eh?Yeah,It's gonna be freaz'n balls down there probably, and the hot springs are located in desert hot springs(duh) and indio,There's a nice cheap one in indio..can't remember the street it's on right now.but yeah,Saltine sea is noth'n but a toxic puddle of filth, shit, and dead fish/dead birds....Loved the road warrior bike video, but that's more like landers(filming location of the original "hills have eyes")
Yeah! you're totally in Stephanie. I have to work on Friday but I get off at 4:30 which isn't bad, so whenever you guys want to leave, let me know. Just has to be after that time. I may need someone to take like 2 of the bikes though unless my little car can handle 4 people and 4 bikes.
marcus, allen & borfo... I dont' think anyone was hating on anyone.
When we planned the Salton Sea Trip, it was an empty weekend, so we committed to it. That's just the way it is. I loved the crankmob ride, my first, and probably not my last. But the logistics of planning out the Salton Sea Trip is just way too consuming to change now. And planning trips like this (and this will not be the last.) isn't as easy as planning a night ride. So it's unfair to compare the two.
I;m going to miss out on MY favorite ride, Sins & Sprockets and the F.U.N.nest (tm) ride in the west, CrankMOB. I can't be in more than one place at a time, yet. Booohoo on me.
And that shit that happened at CrankMOB, let it die already. No one likes a fucking snitch, so stop incriminating fellow ridazz. Because that's essentially what you do when you talk about it.
Dak -
And that shit that happened at CrankMOB, let it die already. No one likes a fucking snitch, so stop incriminating fellow ridazz. Because that's essentially what you do when you talk about it.
Me -
Snitch?!?!?!? WTF!?!?!? I'm not the one that posted up the pic! You never even bother to mention that! Yet I'm the snitch for pointing out that this is potentially detrimental to all of us? How hard do you think it is for anyone to trace back to see who's done the damage on their air conditioning unit? Hell I bet even Inspector Clouseau can figure this one out!
I was at most the conduit at bringing this up in the forums, and I don't see a problem with that. This pic is not representative of the MR that I know. You would have a hard time convincing me that that the pic should stay on this site. I would like to hear from anyone that would like to defend that pic, and explain to me why it should stay. Why should two people be able to define MR like this? This may comeback to bite us in the ass, and for what?
Maybe you would like to reexamine who the snitch is here?
And for the record I've been on the Crank Mob rides before and had fun on them. I've never had a problem with any of the ridazz on them either.
On a similar subject, i don't think its such a good idea to invite Red's Police Friend. As cool as he may be, he might be put in a compromising position with some of our fun and we wouldn't want him to jeopardize his job or to have to step to the other side and enforce the law if he witnessed something that he might think is inappropriate.
Naw steve I think anyone and everyone is welcome. anyone that is willing to come out and havef un with us, will most likely be a chill person. And by the way we dont do any thing worth someones job or some one taking action to that extreme. we must be careful and clean about our actions.
I think we they are starting to realize how incredible this trip is, Fluffa.
Swimming the Sea - Talapia fish seem to be swimming in it.... That's about the best I can say on the pro side of doing it. If you want to learn about the con sides, either go on the trip, or google it.
Looking rad; on a scale of 1-10 I'm at about a level 7 for psychedness...
Unfortunately for the rest of the those in Al's car, I think I'll reach 9.5 about half-hour into the freeway drive there. Think The Great Cornholio......I'll even do the shirt thing.
I've got my fireworks all lined-up here, anyone that wants a personal supply for the trip feel free to inquire about purchasing some goods.
eric AT coffeeanddonut.com
On a similar note, if anyone can bring a tank of hydrogen, I'll bring the balloons.
My friend who operates this cool little niche will need to take a photo or two of us as an audience for a completely unrelated press piece. He just needs the bodies and is trying to kill 2 birds in one stone.
We're camping near "Hitchhiker's Camp" which is just south-east of Salvation Mountain.
Majority of the terrain is DIRT ROADS. Fat tires (both beer and bikes) are suggested. But most riding will be on really grainy Asphalt.
At least one ride is planned. It will be 40 miles round trip. We will probably need car-support (for water and drinks at the end.)
Most rides will be improptu, such as beer runs to Niland, and visiting the awesome things IN Slab City.
It's completely PRIMITIVE. So you need to figure out how to manage all waste, include POOP, Piss & vomit. Leave No Trash.
The IS Cellphone service, sprint being the weakest, AT&T/T-Mobile being strongest.
Maps will be made available. But it's best to get there DURING THE DAY. There are no lights, no signs, nothing once you're in Slab City. We'll try to put up some signs up: ZONE->
Please bring your friends & family. Even if they don't ride bikes. There will be a lot of people there without bikes.
Don't forget the theme. Post-Apocalypse-Punk. Think Mad Max & Tank Girl.
"We're camping near "Hitchhiker's Camp" which is just south-east of Salvation Mountain."
Awesome.
Let's bring a bunch of wire and a trash can and lace a big bike wheel on that one curcular concrete pit. Or just do one helluva huge bonfire in that pit. hahahahahaah
"Unfortunately for the rest of the those in Al's car, I think I'll reach 9.5 about half-hour into the freeway drive there. Think The Great Cornholio......I'll even do the shirt thing. "
PLEASE keep it going until after your arrive, Eric. This I want to see. WITH fireworks in the background.
Thanks to all that made it out to the screening last night. It was standing room only but was still comfy getting everyone in. Everything went as planned but next time I'm skipping the glasses and ice. No one used them!
I hope everyone has a better idea of what to expect on our trip to the sea. I'm looking forward to meeting some of the locals after this flick!
The theater was left cleaner than we found it, so we maybe able to show more films there. We'll see!
Dood, they said there's two bars at Niland. I can't even begin to imagine what the folks I'll be meeting in there are like! But you'll know where to find me if I'm not in camp!
While I was cruising around the shuttle bus came down the hill from Slab City to the community showers and a handful of citizens got out to bathe in the bushes. It looked to me like a bathing only spot, not a pooping spot.
"For those who are not as adventurous, there are showers in town at J+H Trailer Park, on the corner of Main St. and Niland Ave. for $3.00."
I would think that includes that there is a toilet there. Is it $3 to use the toilet? Dunno.
There's also this link on resources.
http://www.desertdutch.org/services.htm
I plan on just taking a poop before I leave here.
You may also want to take a look at our poop thread to get more info,
http://www.midnightridazz.com/forums.php?searchType=title&showThreads=1&keyword=book&topicId=1915
There are common "poop practices" that I can teach. I poop several times daily, and I'm not talking about my preaching.
The "community shower" is right next to the hot-spring in Slab City, and it's run-off from that spring. There are pictures of it in one of the links on this tread...
If anyone is bringing an RV, we'll have a toilet. We should all help and pay the dumping fees (which can be done at any RV site...)
I'm curious (though not curious enough to read this entire thread) - what happened to C.R.A.N.K. mob? It is no longer on bikeboom and isn't in the ride calendar on MR, either. It seems as though an awful lot of the mobsters are doing this trip. The mob was my favourite ride this month so far (my first mob!) and the february one conveniently falls on my brithday weekend. So is C.R.A.N.K. mob not happening, is it happening at the salton sea, or what the heck is up with it? Cause, really, I want to go to the salton sea AND I want to do C.R.A.N.K. mob.
As long as people are situated w/ rides there, I'll reserve space in the C.R.A.N.K. mobile (the OTHER C.R.A.N.K. mobile) for people who are riding to Salton Sea so y'alls have a ride back if ya need it! Right now I think it's Marxxxus, Franz and LaHarrrrrrr! Still room for another person who wants to ride there and get a ride back! DO IT! =)
i.e. I can carry bikes BACK to the LA after the trip.
2 weeks folks. 2 weeks.
What you don't have to worry about:
Stoves, to cook food.
Fire, to stare at and keep warm at night.
Dying, we have no control of that.
What you have to bring:
(be self sufficient! But it help to TEAM UP with others.)
Shelter, it's COLD AT NIGHT.
Food, you have to eat.
Water, you have to drink.
Drinks, you have to party.
Bikes, because I said so.
Something to poop in, or a shovel to dig.
When you are there:
Keep trash to a minimum! Limit the packaging you bring.
Separate BURNABLES. Lots of trash can be burned. Obviously no plastic, don't burn Borfo's gloves. Don't burn B-Rad's wigs. Don't burn Marcus's costumes. Don't burn Franz. Give your left-over food to Fluffer.
whew! good thing Rev. Dak can fit more bikes for the way back... I am at capacity w/ the 3 bikes on my rack... sorry doods! I'm having math problems today! Anyhooo... I am sooo excited for this trip!!!! I haven't been so excited for the apocalypse since Marilyn Manson promised it in '96!! Silly rabbit! you can't promise an apocalypse and expect to keep your career when it doesn't happen! bwahahah.
For those that are planning on going, but don't have a ride, there's seats open for the trip. We pretty much moved the conversation to the google group, http://groups.google.com/group/ride-to-nowhere
I posted at google groups, but may as well add a note here:
I'm driving up in a borrowed truck that seats 5 and has TONS of cargo capacity. Its a big dodge dually redneck-mobile, so we can pile bikes in as necessary. I've got one seat probably filled, but other than that, it is wide open. Leaving friday afternoon and returning sometime on monday.
Brunch at the North Shore Yacht Club
------------------------------------------------
For those of you who didn't get the memo:
All those who are leaving early Friday Morning -
We will be meeting at the North Shore Yacht Club at 1:30 pm for Drinks and Hors D'Oeuvres around the Pool. Please be prepared to dance to groovy tunes as well on the dance floor with your friend, partner or local stranger.
Remember, this is not the South Bay Yacht Club, like Allan wants to go to. We will go there on a different occasion during the trip.
Anyways, if you're stuck with a skinny tired bike throw on the fattest tires that will fit. If you have a mtn bike bring it, you won't have to worry about snake bites, you'll float better if you ride any of the dirt roads out there, and you'll be more comfortable on the crunchy roads.
Seeing as I have nothing to do next weekend, Im thinking of going to this 3day trip. Anybody have room for one more person in their carpool?? Let me know. miguelshmuk@myhelio.com
detailed directions are at the google groups page. Also, there's a sign up sheet for carpool list. Please communicate with us if you need rides or are willing to give them.
I am trying to find a ride for Tomatoes on Saturday as well. If I hear anything I'll let you know. Salton Sea is nothing without Perpetual Cunnilingus!
I just talked today to these guys from the North Shore that were selling Tomatoes at my local Framer's Market, and forgot just about everything they told me to checkout. I'll type what I remembered before I forget. Something about oasises about a mile up the hills. Something about Pennies (or Penny) Canyon being a good place to mt bike and hike. Something about the winds is what kills the fishies. And something about some place that's awesome to go mt biking. That's about it. Oh yeah and something about the bubbling mud pits.

Riss, the Carpool List states you have Jared in your car.... What day and time do you plan on leaving? Look at the list and join someone else's car. Eric said he's not going so I now have one space available in my car. I leave Friday 9 am.
Borfo: I think Im dumb. I tried joining the google group and I cant seem to work it. Anyway, I will call Jared and see whats going on. I dont have tires for my bike either.rats.
Someone might be able to help you out on the bike part, but the ride part is no problem. There's spaces still open. Join the google group and ask around.
I think i've decided to go out to the Salton Sea this weekend, given my schedule I want to leave *early* saturday (say 7-8am) and come back late sunday. I can fit you, your bike, me, my bike, and other random shit...

Whoops....posted the same pic twice. Here's a different one to make up for it.
@User 1: I have my helmet, camouflage pants, combat boots, military-issue goggles, colorful socks, fishnet socks, baseball bat, arm warmers, lipstick. Everything else I'm going to ask you for. Wokka wokka.
"I'd like to see if I could possibly share one with a girl."
i'm bringing a tent that i will most likely not be using, it fits two easily, and it's pink like this site still is! i'll be sleeping on the ground or in the back of my car.
Crespin and I finally decided that we're joining in....leaving early sat am. Fluffer has made several EXPLICIT promises to us if we go....that's all I'm sayin'
God sometimes uses me to channel his thoughts to you guys. He's told me that today is in fact Friday. It was Friday all day, and your friends have left you. But you still have Saturday and Sunday if you can find a ride out there. See you out here!
shouldn't you be packing and worrying about everyone? Do you have gas in the car? Checked your oil? That's motor oil I'm referring to, not olive oil. Check the air pressure too. I perfer 34 psi in the front and 38 psi. The air tempurature in the cabin needs to be no less than 70 degrees and no higher than 74. The music, if you do play music, will have to be classic Beethoven. His mid-period works please. One more thing. Please do not drive over 65 mph on the freeway.
Thank you, and I look forward to traveling with you and your other passengers.
in less than 24 hours, society as we know it will crumble
only the strong will survive on the fringes of once was california, fuel as we know it will no longer exist, roving bands of murderous heathens on bicycles will compete for food in one everlasting
There's a really good chance of getting one of the internets there at slab city. There's a few people there that have a connection. The library in Niland has a wide open access and is in sight of our camp. I'll be bringing a DIY antenna and a nice PC card. One way or another, we'll get one of the internets.
Marino -
Allan,
can you come a couple of hours early to change the oil and stuff.
Me -
What does "and stuff" mean Marino? If you want a fluffa, let me know. They're going to be pretty busy as this is a big weekend for them. I might be able to work something out tonite or out in the desert this weekend.
I'm sure it's somewhere here within the 433 posts....but where the fuck is this place? What are the directions? Not leaving till Saturday because we need to be at Sins & Sprockets....but looking forward....
I thought someone posted that they were going to bring a wireless data card that they could then share out over wifi to the rest of us. My Macbook has a webcam built-in, but it probably isn't the greatest webcam in the world. I've never actually used it.
Did you look at the link Borfo posted? You might want to take a look at the link before you decide to make it out there. Slab City looks freakin scary! I think I'm going to bale on these guys! I would rather live to see tomorrow, know what I mean?
Well, since I've been effectively flaked on, I won't be getting off until my usual, 12AM Sunday morning.
Even if I had other wheels available, C-Mob would be winding down by the time I got on scene.
And Slab City isn't all that close to me than everyone thinks.
Y'all have a good time and I'll be viewing the situation, as usual, from
the Upper-Desert Research Outpost.
Hey, who ever posted this ride to the calendar.. (Borfo?)
can you stop that in yer mouf thing from flashing.... it's super fucking annoying when I'm reading threads.
hey dad, are we there yet?dad, dad, are we there yet? dad, hey are we there yet?hey dad, are we there yet?dad, dad, are we there yet? dad, hey are we there yet?hey dad, are we there yet?dad, dad, are we there yet? dad, hey are we there yet?hey dad, are we there yet?dad, dad, are we there yet? dad, hey are we there yet?
FUCK YEAH!!! Team GREED missed out on the "Brunch at the North Shore Yacht Club - Drinks and Hors D'Oeuvres around the Pool. Please be prepared to dance to groovy tunes as well on the dance floor with your friend, partner or local stranger. "
For this time of the year, that lake-pic looks a helluva lot like Summer already.
Feel free to make a cardboard effigy of my ass burn it.
I might just magically materialize out of the smoke.
And lastly, keep your eyes peeled for the long, lost Spanish galleon.
All I gotta say: post apocalyptic, slab living, slab community, MUSEUM OF MODERN FUN X2!!!!, cheeto man, big booming, the future is a great place!!!!! The first exhibit brought punishment. Looking back at the future can be fierce. I can honestly say that if you were not there you MISSED OUT!!!!
I hope you all made it back to the present alive and well. Thank you for showing up on our little trip to the end of the world. And I hope your time at the apocalypse was wonderful.
Srsly Guise,
The Reverend Dak
P.S. The Museum of Modern Fun was amazing. I just wish they had longer hours.
P.P.S. We are already coming up with ideas for when we go back. Yes, you heard right. We plan on going back. But don't forget, Burning Man is only a few months away. We're going to blow them hippies away.
I just woke up from a dream of the apocalypse. Now I'm in hell.
I can't wait for another trip to the end of the world. Who knew there was so much freedom on the ride to nowhere? Fire!
And bicycles!
I had a megaphone.
but dan stole the batteries. and he broke my strap.
then marino stole the megaphone. and he kicked dirt on me.
I had so much fun pissing off the old people, I'm bringing the megaphone with me EVERYWHERE!
Big Heartfelt Thanks to all the Midnight Ridazz who made it to Slab City.
You were all wonderful. Despite the few bad things, it paled in comparison to all the good things. We endured the end of the apocalypse together!!
I hope we can all go down to San Diego on the March 15th to share the End of the World experience with the Electric Warriors and their minions for the Post Apocalyptic Ride.
Moreover, I hope you now all strongly consider going to Burning Man and joining the Midnight Ridazz Theme Camp this year in late August. Check the website for information at burningman.com and there will be our own discussion group which will basically be the former Ride to Nowhere google group forum.
A big Thanks to Sam and Marino for their contributions. I hope everyone can remember to reimburse them for thier expenses.
I seriously had the time of my life and I love you all.
I'm still getting dirt off all my stuff. But damn, that was a great trip. The day trip Sunday was amazing, the music (B-rad and Marcus and Montana--thank you guys).
Best moment: Jeff finding his voice. (farting into the megaphone).
Worst moment: Jeff becoming a little too fixated with his megaphone.
Best dressed: Cheetos
Best bitch fight: Marino and Fluffer
Best sexy moment: Being naked in the hot springs with the Sexys.
Best in Show: Getting to know you all even better!
My expenses were pretty minimal. My truckmates covered at least half the gas bill, which was all of the expense I can think of that was incurred on a communal basis. If folks want to kick a little down, I'll just wind up giving it to the fund to repair the audio trailer, so just donate directly to that, instead.
This was a fuckin amazing time! The pics give a pretty good taste of how surreal this area of Cali is. There were alot of really cool people we met that live out there. That water tank with MOMF playing was a hell of a good time. Riding back from Bomb Bay Beach at night solo was really fuckin fun and creepy all at the same time. I could swear I heard voices out in the desert more than once! Someone else mentioned this too.
It was great going to see Leonard Knight. He has a really special thing going there, and he's a very kind hearted man. I would like to plan a day helping him out next time we go up there. Oh yes, there will be a next time! We barely scratched the surface of what's out there!
Thanks Marino for getting the port-a-potties out there, that turned out to be a very good call. I hope you get reimbursed on your expenses.
Thanks to all that made it out there, you guyz rock! Look forward to rockin with ya again!
The ride to Bombay Beach. I could not stop laughing at Brassknuckle's baby-sized pedal revolutions (what, are those like 50mm cranks on the mini tall?) and we arrived at Bombay in perfect time for sunset.
Chillin' at the Library. That place is nice, the shade was great, the canal was cool, and it was fun just kicking back there.
One of my favorite moments was when e-rock grabbed a megaphone and announced, "IF YOU'RE NOT HAVING FUN, YOU CAN LEAVE."
MOMF fucking blew me away. I couldn't stop rocking out, jumping and dancing... I don't know how I did any of that, especially after riding 40 miles across the desert. Thanks to Funderstorm & Montana Joe for 2 nights of mind-blowing noise.
Wonderdave & Crespin, thanks for the Bloody Marys!
Thanks for TWBG for helping me set everything up, and keeping the vultures away during the best Bullhorn Brunch ever.
Thank You User1 for reminding me about the place, and Borfo to say "Let's do this."
Annie & Ms. Stephanie, thanks for calming me down and calming me down when the stress got a little high in Bombay Beach.
Sam, Marino, Towlie, etc. Thanks for volunteering space in your vehicles and picking up "strangers/new friends".
Marino, I was wrong about the porta-potties. Thanks for ordering them.
Srsly?! All of you, thank you for coming, and you're welcome.
i really wish i had taken my camera into the porta-potties because there was quite an interesting variety of shits that i could never even imagine. whoever made the tar colored shit in the 'women's' potty: congratulations! how did you manage to make one of those?
those megaphones were one of the most annoying things i have ever experienced in my life. i only wish i hadn't given fluffer back his batteries. he just looked so sad without them i had to give them back. i didn't want to ruin his trip. if i never see a megaphone again, it will be too soon. but i do have to say, megaphone brunch (minus the feedback and sirens on the megaphones) was entertaining and fun, and the secret meeting while using megaphones cracked me up. I was napping with Annie on the top of the tank really far away, and could hear everything that was being said in the secret meeting.
fluffer, you weren't singled out. i had nothing to do with the theft of the megaphone, and the broken strap was accidental. it was a reaction to having a megaphone held to my ear with the siren going at full volume. you had a right to be pissed at me for stealing your batteries and lying to you about stealing them, but you refused to listen and cut back on the megaphone useage, so in my drunken state that seemed like a good way of getting you to stop. i would have stolen other's batteries too, but you were the only one passed out at the time. i do however appologize for lying to you about it. when people are asking you to stop because it's getting annoying, you need to listen. just because we knew megaphones were going to be there, doesn't mean you had to be inconsiderate of the people who found them annoying. no one was complaining during megaphone brunch. everyone knew that was happening and had the ability to either participate or leave camp for it. a very large portion of the camp was complaining about the useage of them during the rest of the trip. anyway, i don't care about it anymore. the trip was amazing and the megaphones didn't ruin it for me.
As an innocent bystander I have to say I dug all megaphone action, particularly PC's 3 day stubble rubbing and Tomatoes' "shut the fuck up"s. Actually, Tomatoes RULED THE MEGAPHONES!!!!
And I have to say is that I'm looking forward to next year. As a 3 day weekend thing it's much more doable for me than Burning Man, it's much closer, and, hell, it was just as much fun.
I recall Senior Tomatoes, the Backwards Saint, breathing softly and incessantly into the megaphone behind my head while he follows me wherever I go. Also, I am so damn thirsty, but I can't even take a sip of my drink without choking to death because he keeps making me laugh so hard... You bastard. No wonder he is a Pope.
Regarding what Greg said a few threads above...^^^^^
I'm starting to think the same about corporate man. Some of you might get mad at me, but I think Greg makes a strong point.
We can not do nearly as much as we did in Black Rock City as we did in Slab City...
Yes, Burning Man is an amazing experience, but I'm wondering if we might want to take all that energy and money and go somewhere where we can have an intimate Ridazz experience like this again?
I do still support the idea of going to Burning Man together. but what if we could just recreate what we just experienced, either back at Slab city, (Too hot in the Summer?), or at a new location?...
Think about it.
I'm not trying to kill Burning Man idea, but we could all sell our tickets easily and go someplace else. Perhaps even better?
I think we should start a new thread about this if there is enough interest. We need to do a Pro and Con list. Do you agree? (I have a feeling I'm going to get my ass kicked....)
Completely understand the idea that we couldn't do as much at Burning Man....here's my thoughts. They are two totally different experiences. When I think back on the times I've gone to BM, they are really once in a lifetime things....and the idea of taking part in building a city of 40,000 people for one week is really a trip. I love the idea of us building our own camp and figuring out exactly what that is....and bringing more people from Black Rock City into our fold. The biggest difference for me is that Black Rock City is really a 24 hour city...and at the Salton Sea I did find myself wishing there was somwhere to go at 3am.
Why not do both? Another Salton Sea trip next year (you know it's gonna be huge next time)....and BM in August.
I don't really want to kill the Burning Man idea. I'm also trying to be more realistic about how we are possibly going to make BM a big theme camp like we are wishing for... We need to start the discussion, planning, and action!
Shit it's so late! I must go now to see FUNDERSTORM
knuckles, the trick to megaphone tolerance is to have one of your own. I went back and forth on the annoyance thing (the sirens really did get old) until I had a megaphone all my own. Lesson learned. Next time, I'll bring batteries.
And for anyone who thought that just because I was falling asleep all the time, I wasn't having all kinds of fun, please realize that I just don't get 4 days off work all that often. sleep == FUN in my world, at least to some degree. But the rides kicked ass and exploring the area was amazing. There's so much potential for art of all kinds in that place its almost hard to believe. Next time, I'm bringin' instruments.
i suppose if ectoplasm can become "hartwick, you pussy", i can assume the new identity "shadowpants" in honor of our fantastic weekend. thanks for the moniker, hartwick!
I've never been to BM and I still want to go this year. I think it will be beneficial for me to experience it so I can kind of "compare" things. Not that they're the same but we can bring ideas to our own Slab City Camp. I think with all of us BM is going to be amazing this year... but then again, yes, the money we spent on the BM tickets (wtf!) could be spent... i couldn't even imagine on what on Slab City... so yeah... but i have to admit it's got esther and i a bit nervous that BM wont be nearly as much F.U.N...
BM is an amazing spectacle. (But - No Spectators Allowed!)
There is still quite a great magic in the experience of Burning Man. In fact it is more Surreal than I can convey. Tons of amazing ART ART ART! MUSIC! DANCING! COLORS! LIGHTS! FREAKS! BUNNIES! BIKES! BEER! & BOOBIES!
I AM going to Burning Man this year. It will be my 4th time.
I really want a lot of Ridazz to go. It's going to be super fun no matter what. The experience is greatest when shared (I.M.O.)
BM needs be experienced if you've never gone. The comparison between the Salton Sea trip and BM can not be avoided. There are few things that I like about the SS trip that BM can't hold a candle to. Some are the freedom, the openness (no fence), no fire restrictions, hot springs, far less money, the lack of resources, and having complete control ourselves. BM strong points are more peeps, more art, more energy, bigger main fire.
It's a lot more remote than Slab City and it's not going to be as futurist apocalyptic as the Ride to Nowhere but it's going to have some interesting prizes, some surreal visual and aural objects along the route, and we're going to trip out plenty of Route 66 tourists.
Yes, in the future people will still be using "like" in their conversations, but the "Val" will be far removed from the rest of what was known as California.
I don't think I'm the only one getting the years mixed up.
---
Funderstorm at SpaceArc last night had the same vibe and energy from the weekend, we easily could have been back in the future...
Oh how I wish I had found this before heading to the Salton Sea. 25-dart, belt-fed, fully automatic blaster that fires sonic micro darts that whistle while they fly through the air. It also comes with green tactical 'night vision' accessory. How bad ass would one of these, painted green, look in the machine gun mount on the sidecar?
Thanks for the crazy weekend! Dak, Marino, Sam, Jeff--good job. The music, food, fire and toilets were very much appreciated. The best part was getting to know you all a little better.
I thought this trip was a great precursor to BM08 and I think we have an amazing amount of creativity and energy to share. Comparing the SS Trip to BM is like comparing Fluffers to Armadillos and I'm glad to hear people want to keep the two separate trips.
I think this trip gave us all a lot to think about. A yearly trip to SS will be great place to test things out for Black Rock City . For instance; creating a large shade structure (how hard is a geo dome to build?), making sure we bring in enough beer, food and toys, (I knew I should have brought my roller skates, my disco ball and more tomato juice.)
So I'd like to get together and start planning Burning Man '08, There are a few key things we need to discuss and some of them are time sensitive; Camp Theme/Events/Shade Structures/Design of Camp, etc.. So I'd like to see a show of hands of how many peeps are interested in getting together to brainstorm. The Bike Oven has offered their space to hold meetings/plans/events.
We have some SS pics as well as some Burning Man pics of years past at, http://www.flickr.com/photos/crespinanddavid/
Incidentally, I just googled it, and it seems the article i read about the cost of wind turbines is in the ballpark for the highest capacity turbines.
http://www.windpower.org/en/tour/econ/index.htm
Hard to believe those wind farms are spending $500K on each of those turbines, but that seems to be the case, unless they aren't using the highest capacity turbines available, which is certainly possible.
$500 k is on the low side for today's turbines. $1.5 million is about the going price for the total price of an installed turbine. But these bigger units make so much power it compensates for the higher cost.
Cool video.

Not happening, obviously. We’re building a bar and memorial to celebrate 20 years of Midnight Ridazz, and to remember all our fallen friends and fellow ridazz. Bring drinks to share, and wood to burn. Please pay your poop dues,$15 to Gerson/ragerabbit. Please steal these images and share with ridazz. @ridazz_camp_
