"more butts in saddles"
yes, more people should ride horses!
but fixed gears with grips matching a model's outfit in JC Penny commercials is taking it way too far.
Kind of like when the WTCs got attacked on 9/11 and we went into Afghanistan to get bin Laden, then all of a sudden we're democratizing Iraq. just too far.

besides there has always been plenty of people riding bikes. It just wasn't cool until everyone started riding fixed gears. Now it's cool and everyone knows that once something becomes "cool" it is already lame.

more people = more problems.
people fuck everything up and the more people there are the more fucked they make shit. the more morons on the road riding bicycles the worse it is for the rest of us.
for example I was just driving behind two idiots on fixed gears who were mindlessly ambling up the road with no hands, taking up the entire lane not caring that I was behind them, swerving back and forth, basically being typical discourteous people who ride bikes thinking they own the road and are more entitled to it than motorists are. People like that make me understand completely why drivers get so frustrated with cyclists. They get pissed off at people like that and then take it out on some other cyclist who knows what they are doing and did them no harm. fuck that shit.

Im tired of people saying its becoming too popular, too mainstream,as some point in your life your gonna do something mainstream, whether you like it or not, from music to fashion,I dont know about evryone in here ,but i love seeing ridazz all over the town,so you have your douchebags that will fuk it up,and make a bad name for all the riders out,but with more people, more problems come wit it.I'll admit im a newbie.Ive been riding for 3yrs now...and ive met some pretty cool down to earth people.Ive had fun in these rides and enjoyed this city in and out riding.I also ride by myself alot around 3am..and its so peaceful to ride in an open road,no cars,so I am part of that mainstream that has hit us,but Im here to stay...im riding til the wheels fall off.lol wow im too high...peaceand onelove

You should install a sweet set of electric Air Horns like I have on my bike now.
At 135 dB, the only thing they don't scare the shit out of is some guy driving an SD-40 down the UPRR right-of-way.
A couple of horn-blasts from a top-tube mounted unit would've made them little piggies squeel, then peel.

I look upon people who ride geared bikes with pie plates and reflectors the same way I look upon fixed gear riders. Just call me the resident bike snob.
Also I think people on expensive road bikes and full matching kits who ride like assholes are assholes too. An asshole is an asshole is an asshole.
But just because I may seem to be criticizing you or your kind doesn't mean you should take it to heart. By all means ride your bike and get your friends to do it, too. But there's an intelligent ways to go about things that you are new to, and there's a douchey way. And to be quite honest around here I see a lot more of the latter. But you shouldn't give a fuck what I think. All you do by getting offended/defensive is validate what I say.

I think this discussion is relevant, but only for LA. I're rode in almost a dozen cities this year and i can tell you LA bike scene still is underground by comparison. No matter how much you think its all blowed up, if u compare it to almost every other major metropolitan city, we are still in a nascent stage. Yeah our party rides and weekly social rides are awesome and "progressive", but the fact is riding in other cities is so normal for people of all ages and backgrounds that the notion of a mass party ride is almost a novelty. Most of the bikers I see now are all scenesters (not hipsters per se) but people out for social bike enjoyment and they got into it for the party. Id say two years ago the majority of the bikers we saw on the rides were bikers who commuted or biked it solo or with friends and later discovered the party, but now the majority of people out there are doing it the other way around, by discovering riding thru the parties...

los angeles has more reasons why it's fun to do party rides... its size
the social aspect is the most significant aspect of the midnight ridazz
sure we can all ride alone... but when we ride together it's because we enjoy riding with others. the social interaction might include some beers, but it may also be pace lining.
most people are cool regardless of their "style" or whatever. maybe you need to really get to know them on an individual basis before judging them.

My grand uncle, who lived in Madrid, Spain, was an avid cyclist. And every year he would take a couple of months to tour different parts of Europe on his bike.
When I was a little kid, here in the Valley, I used to kick it with my friends on a Schwinn Stingray just because it was fun - until it was stolen, and then I made a beater Stingray lookalike.
In my teens, when I had places to go, but no license, I got a Schwinn Varsity. I used to love that bike. It got me to my first jobs, and to my friends' houses, who were getting further and further afield. Also, my friends and I would get together, sometimes eight or ten of us, and we would ride to cool new places in LA, and we'd have some beers and smoke some pot - or more exotic things. Hell, we were doing party rides and didn't even know it. But it was a natural thing for friends to do.
Later, in my twenties, when my car broke down, and I was too poor to fix it, I pulled out the old Varsity and rode that to work for months - dictated by necessity, but nonetheless fun.
Recently, I bought a bike for exercise - I was putting on a few pounds, and thought this would be a good way to help get them off. I don't need to ride a bike. I guess I could have got a gym membership instead. but it was fun taking solo rides out to Balboa lake every once in a while, or doing laps around the Sepulveda basin.
Then, on a couple Wednesday nights, when I was kicking at home, I saw a crazy group of riders go by hooting and laughing, riding big bikes, and having obvious fun. After the second time this happened, it inspired me to do some searches online, and I found MR. I've now gone to a few rides, and it is a blast. Yes, there are some jerks sometimes - but, quite frankly, not many. The SFV bike community I've met have all been super friendly and accepting and inclusive. Very chill, cool people. And I appreciate their friendliness. As far as I can tell, they haven't judged. It seems they just want to ride (or play polo) and have fun. I intend to follow their example... I found cycling again through the rides. That's cool. No matter how, I found cycling. That's all that matters. And even if I turn out to be a mainstream or seasonal rider, and disappear when it gets cold, or for good after a few months, what does it matter? How did my being here, even if it is for a short time, hurt anything?
there will likely always be rides that people can complain about. So it is then simply a matter of organizing more rides that are fun and that people can't complain about. But I'm a firm believer that one person's fun is another person's drag - that's the way it is. So let's just ride - and whenever possible, let's ride together, and make connections.

I'm sorry but when you can go to fucking URBAN OUTFITTERS.com and buy a bike...can choose by which COLOR you want it..(mind you can't pick parts..you know the shit that MATTERS) that is TRENDY FUCKING BULLSHIT.
Anyone who has been into anything long enough gets protective of it, gets defensive of it, and doesn't want to see it get ruined by mainstream-dom the way everything else does. Just like rock n roll, just like punk rock. And you know what? people have a right to feel that way. oh no! people have opinions! get over it.

You think fixies is "mainstream"?!
"Mainstream" bicycles will mean the following:
(1) Dead teamsters buried under protect bicycle paths
(2) Republican critical mass rides
(3) Roadie complaints about moms riding their kids to school in cargo bikes
(4) Both political parties and the whole retail sector fighting for bicyclists' business
Wake the fuck up if you think cycling is "mainstream", and that you don't like it. Youth culture does not equal the total of our civilization's culture.

I like the spirit of the thread, but can we really generalize about "cycling"? There are many flavors of cyclists and will always be different trends and such, but it is a good thing when people ride their bikes. So anyone who rides mtn bikes in the dirt, for fun, isn't a real cyclist? It's hard to think of John Tomac , Tinker Juarez, or Juliana Furtado as not being cyclists. I understand the distinction you are trying to make, believe me I understand, but your definition of cyclist seems rather narrow. But I agree, some cyclists are ridazz, not all ridazz are cyclists.

i am however gonna give a good example of how things work
i rode flatland freestyle from the time i was 10 till 18 and i got pretty good at it...round the time i was bout15 they started putting it in like cerial commercials, made lame movies likeRAD and destroyed it in my eyes....then by the time i was 17 no one noticed flatland freestyle at all..it pretty much started vanishing...i quit started skool and other hobbies and never thought anything of it for a long long time, well a couple years ago someone brought up a couple names of guys i used to ride with...jesse puente...day smith...and i started researching online and i find out to my suprise that the sport is still huge and completly underground dependant...the trix have advanced..the best riders never quit and are now in their mid to late 30s..i was amazed..i couldnt believe it,and i thought it was awsome
point is its gonna blow up and then it will come back down and the real ones will still be doing it and the rest will quit....the cool part is that maybe they will sell their bikes for cheap lol

And I commend you for that.
Anyone who makes it through Parris Island, or the Recruit Depot in San Diego should immediately be vested.
Essentially, if one were cornered by a Marine and a UFC fighter in a dark alley, the UFC fighter would be the weaker wall to breach.

A friend of my dad's used to beat up Marines at the waterfront bars here in Pedro as a hobby. I'm sure a lot of them are badass, but they're not made of kryptonite.

If I was 5 minutes earlier, I would've ventured to the universe where PC was being served for dinner.
I heard that for every bite you took, you would gain his infinite knowledge.
In all seriousness, this was probably a bar where the Marines were most likely drunk and the friend off your dads wasn't.
That's what you call, capitalizing on the inebriated advantage!!!
Works on regular Joes as well.

I haven't read this thread, but it is one of my little life's goal to make bicycling so mainstream that is as acceptable and expected as having and using a toothbrush..(no the toothbrush comment is not original....I stoled that from Rev 106). see

Ruined by himself doesn't want cycling to be mainstream but then his gang of crotch rockets makes an entire hipster kit to advertise to the mainstream how kewl their bar is.

Bwahahaha.
Oh this is YOUR subculture right?
What's the appropriate cutoff for for the re-popularization of cycling? The day after you started? haha.
I hope this shit goes so mainstream that you can't turn on TV, search the google, open a magazine, or look out the window of an iowa farm house without seeing a peloton of of No Fear broz on a fleet of fixies, listening to a Justin Beiber vs ICP mash-up being broadcast from their Huffyâ„¢ tall bike with optional bluetooth sound-system that their mom bought for them at Costco based an ad she saw in the sunday edition of USA today.
Then RBI & the Duder will have to find a more "underground" hobby to help popularize.
Stay original friends.

The only thing more "underground" that comes off the top of my head is spelunking.
Whether it's caving, draining, mine-exploration, or a caved-in portion of a man-made tunnel, it's quite an awesome thing to do that not many others would choose.
Many are paranoid of a mine collapsing and trapping them for ages until their mummified remains are discovered by future Indiana Joneses.
I actually know of ways to not panic and make the best of my new-found hole should I never find a way out.
