Whaat the fuck was that last night?
I dont know if it was too much testosterone, the late start time, or a bunch of people suffering from fixie syndrome, but how do you split the entire group into 4 packs and have 1+ accidents within the first 100M of the ride... There was also some insane disrespect to the motorists(ie engulfing cars)
I couldn't make it to critical mass and thought this was supossed to be the same/similar idea.
The funny part was after everyone raced ahead when we got to a big hill the pack was split up more as people just walked up the hills.

I guess it's called the People's Ride because people were spread all over town. I was with a group in DTLA only to hear there was another group by the LA River.

yeah all the fixie highschool kids like to sprint off the front of rides and stretch out the group for reasons well never know

Let's not blame anyone. Let's just take this into consideration that we should try to slow down and keep groups together (in general). I was at the front of this ride telling people to slow down (sounding like a grandma) and we did a little, but I don't think it helped much for others in the back.

rider organizer has to actually lead the ride
if you organize a ride, get a couple of people to help you out to establish a pace line.
3-5 bikes right next to each other in a line that will make the pace. people who sprint will get dropped. simple.

you got to let them go fast. Let em go
Have a fast ride vet lead them to whenever
everybody slow up and let them go, then continue the ride at a pace suitable to everybody else.

like two months back one the people's ride i was in a similar situation. i remember being in the front of the pack when we broke away at a pretty decent speed. not that fast, but definitely not people's ride speed. i kept telling everyone to slow down and hold at lights so the rest of the group could catch up but no one listened to me.

Maybe certain people should wear walkie talkies and communicate to each other how the group is doing in regards to speed, accident, flats, etc. Just to try to keep that size of a group together.
Cause if those kids weren't led by someone they would definitely slow the fuck down.

a slight improvement to keeping the group together and preserving the tendancy for people to reject being told what to do is that I think there is something to be said for
how you tell people to slow down. instead of yelling "hey you! slow down!" at people, just say "slowing!" "slowing!" that way it's not directed at any one person and you are less likely to get resistance from all these head strong people who dont like to be told how to ride...

Aye, we spent quite a bit of the ride trying to get the front to slow down. we tried pace walling the front, we tried follow the tallbike, we tried a bunch of stuff, what really needs to happen for the group to stay cohesive is maybe a 3 mph drop in the pace from the front. that's it. All these younger kids havent been riding long enough to develop that internal sense of how fast they're going, and so the ride slowly ramps up its speed at the front, until it starts hauling. At that point you're lucky to get em to stop for a light with whizzing cross traffic.
The rel thing is, we need MORE people being vocal, not what's being said so much. If it's just one or two people, they get tuned out, even with a megaphone.
Also, if you see a couple people speeding past to be at the front, just let em go. that chase the front mentality is how rides get hijacked up big hills, go to fast, cause accidents, and cause interactions of the negative sort with other road users/cops.

yeah, even while trying to direct the group at the front to slow and hold at reds, these kids really didn't care. they ran the reds with total disregard for safety. i even mentioned how it was essential in order to get the group back together. kinda sad that people can be so selfish or just not give a fuck.

this situation was two months back.
i wasn't there this month... well kinda. i actually ran into a splinter group on the broadway bridge around 12 something on my way home and joined up with them for like an hour and then left.
