SELL ME YOUR OLD 700 RIMS
Thread started by barleye at 02.27.08 - 5:57 pm

I'm looking for a set of rims for a fixed gear bike. just a basic stainless steel set of 700 rims like the one shown here. doesn't need to be fancy... araya, (black) ukai: those are 2 I've seen that i'd prefer.

A lot of you have gotta have a set sitting around after you upgraded your bikes to mavics, somas and other good rims. email me at barleye at hotmail if you have a set for sale.

thanks.

Barleye,

Did you see these for $80? Not sure what the shipping would be though.

You just want rims, not the whole wheelset?

I need the whole wheel set...I have 4 people offering up their old 27 x 1 1/4" rims for free since they bought new 700 wheel sets. I figure there are a bunch of riders that had old 700 basic steel rims and upgrade to nice high end rims. i have a cog for it ready to go.

FYI Araya can be quite expensive, more so than much of Mavic's line.

I'm going to be core-elite for a second and say that it sounds like you are looking for 700C complete wheels with aluminum rims, not "stainless steel rims." You don't want steel rims, they are heavy and hard to stop.

THAT SOUNDS ABOUT RIGHT...THE OLD STYLE 700 RIMS THAT CAME STANDARD ON BIKES SUCH AS UNIVEGA ROAD BIKES IN THE EARLY 80'S

"THE OLD STYLE 700 RIMS THAT CAME STANDARD ON BIKES SUCH AS UNIVEGA ROAD BIKES IN THE EARLY 80'S"

27s came "standard" on road bikes in the early 80s. I've converted 5 early 80s road bikes to ss/fixed (a Univega, 2 Fujis, 2 Nishikis), and all had 27s.

French bikes from that time period mostly had 700s, but then you get into a different set of problems. The rims might be decent though.

I have a univega super strada with all dura ace from 81 or 82 and it came with the rims I'm looking for but I won't part it out. not sure if it was a custom bike at the time or not.

Right, the super strada w/Dura Ace was the high-end race bike. The "standard" models came with 27s. Most conversions are done to "standard" models.

(And good, don't part it out. Keep that baby geared. Converting top-of the line vintage steel FTL.)

$80 bux for a fixed wheelset in good condition is a snazy price.....Barleye, I think your expectations are a bit high.

Either that or you haven't clearly communicated the basement level crap rating you're really looking to roll on.

That said, I have a nearly new (less than 400 miles), modern Sun rim with flip-flop Suzue hub in very attractive condition....I also have a 16t DuraAce cog and lockring for it. In addition I have a non-matching Mavic front wheel of the anonymous model range (low to mid).

I bought the Sun wheel new about 5 years ago for $130.
How much is this combo worth to you?

I'm just sayin' don't be surprised when you get an avalanche of offers for free 27s and not much in the 700 department. Which it sounds like you have.

ps Buy Hair's wheels.

User "barleye," your Super Strada with full Dura Ace is a very nice bicycle. Leave it alone!

City Hemoglobin, when you were doing your ss/fixed conversions were you sticking with 27" wheels or switching to 700c? If 700c, is there a favorite long-reach brake you have found to be reliable? Or were you also switching forks?

Ok, so I need all your expertise advice on this one....

I've been offered Vuelta 700 rims, new for my fixed gear. The whole for the tube is Schrader size...I ride 700 tubes with Presta currently. Can I get away with Presta thru a Schrader hole? It moves around slightly.Does that matter terribly?

It's quick release front and back. I never leave my bike unattended more than a few minutes so I'm not worried about them getting stolen. with back pedaling to break, will that make the stability of the rim to the bike any less? I don't skid stop.....or is it recommended to swap out the axle for nut/bolt axles?

never ever ever ever ever have a qr skewer for a fixed gear.
if you are going to take the old rims and relace them to track specific hubs, i have a set of alex rims i would let go for $40. they are black and i think 36x36 holed.

what about the presta thru a schrader hole? i can swap out the quick release pretty easily i think.

ive heard that the area around the valve can pinch flat if you hit a pothole in the right spot, but i dont know if thats entirely true. fyi the ones i have are presta.

I shouldn't worry too much about Presta's going through a Schrader hole.
I use Presta's on my MTB and recumbent and they seat just fine.
In case of the nut happens to go through the hole, a small washer should do the trick.

@Hair:

doh, forgot to check back on this thread, so I missed your question.

"City Hemoglobin, when you were doing your ss/fixed conversions were you sticking with 27" wheels or switching to 700c? If 700c, is there a favorite long-reach brake you have found to be reliable? Or were you also switching forks?"

700s. Many old brakes work if you set the pads all the way down in the slots. Drop them as low as possible and tighten the hell out of them, and most Suntour brakes seem to work.

@barleye:

"The whole [sic] for the tube is Schrader size...I ride 700 tubes with Presta currently. Can I get away with Presta thru a Schrader hole? It moves around slightly.Does that matter terribly?"

The presta through the schraeder hole isn't *that* big of an issue... the real issue is that most rims drilled for schrader valves are rated from 60psi-90psi. Most people like to run road tires at 120psi.

My first conversion back in 2003 was a Nishiki with wheels like you describe, and those particular rims were rated to ~65psi. I was sick of riding on squishy flat tires so I said fuck it and pumped it to 100psi. The tire blew off the bead, the tube exploded, and I threw the wheels in the trash.

And ruinedbyidiots is right about the QR on the rear for a fixed gear.

ps Buy ruinedbyidiots' wheels. People are offering you cheap, good solutions.. quit fuckin around and jump on it, son!
