Bikes are Being Stolen left and right

Hey Folks,
I just had my copper orange beach cruiser and purple cannondale mountain bike stolen from my pad. I put a post up on craigslist about it and started searching hoping to find it and realized that a lot of people have been getting there bikes stolen lately. So shell some cash for that U-bolt and keep an eye out on your bikes.
Also, If you've ever been to a crank mob then you've seen my orange/copper beach cruiser. So if see that bike, call the police and message me.

Can you give us more information. Like the location (general location not your address) post some pics of the bike and what time of day or night did the theft occur.

someone get a steel bike, and run a very strong electrical current through it. leave it unlocked, and watch someone walk away, or die trying.

More and more often, I'm taking my bike inside when I can, at resturants, libraries and stores.
I also just bought a Bulldog U-lock.
Mostly I try to not leave the bike alone for very long in sketchy areas.
I live in whitebread suburbia, but I've got in the habit of locking up in my own garage.
I really love my bike, and it would break my heart to lose her.

I own the mini bulldog u-lock+cable set and it makes me feel so secure about my bike and not having thoughts of my bike being stolen while im in class

has anyone had their bike stolen while it was locked/freelocked? i'm hearing about a lot of unlocked bikes/cable locks. i know a sophisticated thief would be able to bust a cheaper kryptonite or masterlock u-lock. has anyone heard of this happening, or are there just a bunch of asshole kids out there with bolt cutters?

If someone wants to sit there and hacksaw through a U-Lock for 20 minutes to an hour, that is their perogative. The idea of a U-Lock is time. The thief will have to invest a lot of time into stealing a U-locked bike. Time is something most thieves don't have, they need to cut the lock quick and go. Cables, chains, thin U-Locks, all can be cut quickly with bolt cutters.
The heavy duty Bulldog and Kryptonite locks just can't be cut with bolt cutters. You need a lot of time and elbow grease. Something most thieves don't have.

Someone can put an airtank in a van and just use a cutting wheel to cut through any lock in under 30 seconds. My dad and I did that when a friend of mine gave me a bike she freelocked with a kryptonite ulock. Took about 20 seconds.

Anyone can use a portable angle grinder and be through any u-lock in 30 seconds, seriously. I used one on my own lock when I lost the key. Its a frightening reality.

obviously there is no stopping someone with an angle grinder. It would seem like a risky way to steal a bike because of the attention you'd be attracting to yourself just by having the tool on you and then, of course, the sparks and noise.
but then, what do you say to someone who may be stealing a bike but you dont really know if that's their bike or not?

that video says a lot!
BUT on the flip side, thats NYC and people have to ignore each other to move efficiently through their rats nest city. I'd like to think the people in LA would be more vocal, but...yeah right. LA is probably the same way. Mehhh

i used to work on at the laemmle theater on 2nd street in santa monica. one day while sitting in the box office reading i saw some black homeless looking guy walk up to a bike with wire cutters and start to cut at the cable lock. i turned the volume up on my pa and shouted "what the fuck are you doing!?" people across the street heard me and turned around, the guy panicked and said "im uh unlocking my bike!" i just went "bullshit" and at that moment my manager walked up and grabbed the phone so the thief shouted "dont call the cops" and ran.

Don't leave your bikes on your porch! Or in your backyard!
Buy a freakin U-lock already! Sure, they're not indestructible, but I've had mine for 8 years. Just one. That's it. Great investment. Locks up my bike everyday. Been doing it's job for 8 years. And then if some one cuts your lock, may that motherfucker rot in hell.

Can we have a moratorium on people posting about their stolen bikes if they were not properly locked? And by properly locked, I mean a u-bolt fastened to an immovable object. I mean I feel for you guys but, damn, haven't you guys been reading the boards the last 6 months?

I think it's helpful for all of us to at least know where and how the thieves are working. I say keep posting em if it happens, but buy a U-lock already! Oh, and use it too.

buy the thick u-lock not the thin one. people have gotten u-locked bikes stolen too, in seconds.
