So one of my cats were stuck in a tree out back and I had to chase off the Pit Bull that scared it.
As I was walking back to the house to get my sling-shot, I noticed some dude walking his bike along the hardly noticeable, bikelane paralleling Hesperia Rd.
I yelled "Got a flat?!?!?", he nodded and I told him to bring it over here.
So we found the leak, along with other serious maladies on the Wal-Mart special and rectified them.
As I was doing this, I gave him some info about MR, Critical Mass, and a bunch of other cycling-related things that could be beneficial to others he rides with.
So, this got me to thinking, in order to build my army, I'm going to start keeping an eye out for people walking their bikes.
Chances are, they've got a simple flat and need to know that they're not alone.

+1 i have handed out many a tube to stranded rider from the comfort of my car. i think that your on to something.

lol, i know, i have to do the same thing. Balboa park has these tiny thorns that love my patches.

Not so much the thorns I've got to deal with, but mainly direct hits on gravel-pebbles that pinch-flat.

you and me both adam.
sarah knows about this but I took a short cut through a park on my way home and helped a downed rida, he was like 6 or 7 i think.
didn't tell him about MR but did tell him to wear a helmet.

Speaking of which when we were getting ready for the poker ride Saturday afternoon an old homeless dude on a bike pulled up right when we were leaving. We were like an oasis too him because he had just used his last patch and he was out of tubes and patches. No one had any extra mtn bike tubes with them except for Mook so he gave him a tube and I gave a patch kit. He was stunned to find a group of bicycle riders out in the middle of nowhere. It was his lucky day. We chatted with him later when he got to Amboy and everyone was buying potato chips and shit at Roy's.
He was riding from Redondo Beach to Colorado.

I thought that for rough surfaces, like the desert, like Salton Sea, you take some air OUT....?

We've got paved roads up here, it's just that there's alot of gravel and powder trains that lose their loads quite often.

Less air in tires = more comfort.
Also, less air in tires = increased risk of pinch flat.
The fatter the tire, the less air you need to avoid pinch flats, and, of course, the lighter you are the less air you need to avoid pinch flats.

You must have some hellafied gravel up there, because I encounter gravel and pebbles all the time where I live and it's rarely a problem for me or for my skinny little metrosexual 700X23 road racing tires.

I'm running some of these Performance street-slicks on there with high-psi and a 1" tread width.
Great speed for a clear road, but with all the shit flying around, I'm starting to reconsider these Specialized, 1.5" cruiser tires with 80psi.
As far as the original topic goes, I wonder what would happen if I put my mechanical-inclination to use in an auto-repair place and amused the customers with ridazz tales?
As I rebuild their transmission, I chant the tales of CRANK mob riding through West LA and how behemoths like this one stood motionless.
