MIDNIGHT RIDAZZ: SWARM THE PIER RIDE
DESTINATION: SANTA MONICA PIER
START TIME:
BRING A WHISTLE OR OTHER ANALOG NOISE DEVICE
We're buggin! The theme of the ride is INSECTS DESCENDING. Bring a coaches whistle, a clicker clacker, a party clapper.... (You know.. shit that will bug people out.) We're buzzing along and the noise in the distance is the masses of creatures crawling... flying.... freeking creeping! (That's kinda creepy I feel creeped out.)

Hey this is cool I got three volunteers so far. Thanks guys......
I just got done riding out there from silverlake. Its a good 17 -18 miles one way.
Might be too long for a lot of Ridazz. Hmmmmmm I think its gonna be chaos to try to cork. In stead this ride might need to START at the pier.
We can still organize rides to get there but the ride wil begin at the pier and lets take it to maybe the venice pier or culver city or maybe dockweiler. What do you guys think?
Where are the west sidazz?

If it's gonna start at the pier you should contact the Santa Monica Critial Mass organizers since that ride starts from the pier. Those are quite enjoyable as well.

Nice one. I will hit them up.
If we do start the ride and end it at the pier. I'm thinking of scouting a culver city starting point. If anyone has suggestions let me know.

maybe some of the south sidazz, could meet at the Watts Towers or the imperial green line/blue line station, and ride up imperial, or take the green line all the way to aviation, and then ride up vista del mar, ocean to the pier...or along the beach bike path.

I am down with a Culver City Start! I propose the parking lot next to Trader Joes, it is across the street fro the new downtown:

I think the Trader Joe's parking lot is a good idea, easy to find, well lit, and the area is just pretty nice. Only problem is I don't know how parking is in the area. UCLA could be another option, meter parking is free after 9 and there's a 3 level lot next to the student union. UCPD could be hassle though. Mobbing through Westwood and down Wilshire could be interesting though.

ok trader joe's is the second location! what time do you think you guys will need to start to make it to the pier by 11:30PM?
West Sidazz help me out on this one!

parking around downtown culver city at that time is not a problem. also there is a parking structure jon watseka just a few blocks west of trader joes. its never full at night, and could probably accomodate ~ 100 cars? or more?

Where exactly are the East Side Ridazz metting at LACC? I think to avoid confusion we should be more specific.

LACC parkinglot where the old stadium used to be. Right next to where the Redline lets out.

I'm right on the east side of beverly hills, I think a big group plowing down wilshire, right by the big rodeo drive scene would be pretty sweet.
UCLA would be a good meeting spot, as the grass areas infront of the hospitals are pretty big. If you wanted something 2 miles east, you could put it at Beverly Hills High, the grass lot in front is gigantic, and they have so so parking, maybe 40-60 cars. I think that'd be a better ending spot if we don't choose somewhere else.

did the ride again yesterday but this time I took venice.... I did veer off onto the bike path south by the river and that was awesome as usual. but I think if it's gonna be a large mass Venice straight to the boardwalk is gonna be the way to go.... we can try to coordinate with the trader joe's Ridazz to see if we can combine for the final run... but that might be wishful thinking. Whats up with the UCLA peoples? anybody planning to cluster up over there?

This ride is looking awesome. I'm sure my gang will be happy about the Culver City starting point. I'll be riding from LACC.
Someone from Santa Monica, or something, should start from Malibu, and come SOUTH to the pier. it would be crazy having tons of bike come from the norht and south.
I'm going to be gone the rest of this and next week. I'll be back Tuesday or Weds. So I should be able to make a spoke card party or something.

RANDOM THOUGHT:
At the risk of sounding like a total nerd I was calculating with BIG BIKE DAN about what the average speed of the mass always turns out to be.... we think 10-12mph. this can serve as a guide for everyone to beaware of in terms of keeping pace with the mass.
I would like to attempt to pace our selves at 10-12 mph and see where that gets us. In other words Front Ridazz please attempt to restrain yourselves to 10-12mph. rear Ridazz please attempt to keep up to 10-12mph. I bet if we really try to get coordinated we could keep our mass relatively intact....

Are there any Ridazz from the SFValley who are going on this ride?
I intend to start from LACC, but getting back to the valley would be impossible via the Redline. It stops running at 12:30.
Any ideas about riding back to the valley? I'm not familiar with any bike friendly routes from Santa Monica.

The Sepulveda Pass Baby! From the Pier to Sepulveda 4 miles.
6 miles up (all up, Wislhire and all) ( yes you can do it) and then 3.5 miles down to Ventura Blvd. It should take about an hour. Or you can get Veteran and Wilshire by 12:30 am and take the bus over on the 761 or at that time of the night 233. Let be known if your ridaa enough to do it.

Im planning on riding from the valley....a fixed rider will have a hellish ride back through sepulveda....gears will help greatly with the return. It might even be easier to take the flat streets through Santa Monica back to hollywood and then wrap around highland to ventura....Either way it will be a long demanding ride. Good times!

HEY!
NELA folks can meet up at the Gold Line Highland Park station. 5800 Marmion Way. (One block North of Figueroa, between Avenue 57 and Avenue 59.)
We'll gather at 7:30 and ride at 8:00pm Sharp to LACC, via York, Fletcher, Silverlake Blvd., Sunset...
Silverlakers may want to meet up at the old Critcal Mass meeting point in front of the Liquor Store on Sunset and Parkman (Silverlake Blvd.) We'll probably pass there by 8:30pm.
The trip from Highland Park will add 8.7 miles to the ride.
Why? "Because We're HARDCORE!"

was an alright ride, I showed up late at the culver city place, had to mess with bent plates and stuff on my chain, so I took off without a spoke card and never ended up catching any group, the biggest one was 3 people. So we showed up at the pier at about 11:30, decent sized group, but I felt like we missed most of the more fun parts. Around 12 everyone seemed to be taking off. Then rode with a "LACC" group back to wilshire and beyond. Overall, I think if I would have showed up on time it would have been a little better.

Great ride... Met up w/ the LACC crew and rode in... no cops bugging us. I did see one rider on the curb accompanied by a cop... like if he was being detained. It was right when the group made a left on La Brea from Wilshire. Maybe he was corking? Well... props to the corkers and to all that helped organize the ride. I haven't been to the pier for a long time and it brings back memories of being 18 and taking a girl there to watch the waves come in. I did notice some guy messing with the banner hanging on the pier but I think the dude was trying to put it back. I did think it was awesome when we met up w/ the Culver group... I was happy to see them... I was lucky to get a ride from a friend w/ the Culver pack. We got some food at Wendy's on Venice and saw all the riders making the trek back. A whole lot of props for the LACC crew... and the NELA crew... working their way back. All in all... another great ride....

Good ride. It was fun to end up someplace really different. The ocean marks the end of bikeable territory, so it was like we'd really covered it all. The only thing that was missing was the music. Where was the trailer? That thing really gets the party going.
Word up to the LACC crew! You guys rocked. The ride home was nearly as fun as the ride out. I logged 42 miles total. Fun stuff. I had a blast pulling you BMX dudes up the hills and stuff.

Just got back. Man... My nuts were abused.
I don't know what the hell I've done this ride a million times tonight just kicked my balls. Hahahah
I rolled back with Big Bike Dan and his posse. I see I could have simplified the route even more by going vermont straight to Venice. Swarm 2 someday. 850 ridazz was a decent turnout. I guess the big long trek shook a few people off.
What you guys think about that no corking rule? I wanted to run every light. I think the key is pacing ourselves to the lights and breaking up into one light's worth of groups.... Ha that's some serious coordination!
Well anyway.... Thanks for riding! And thanks to everyone who helped out. We made waaaay too many spoke cards lol!

Nice ride. There were more people at LACC than I expected. I liked having two start points and then meeting up for one large ride for the last leg. In this case though I think it was more of a short ride vs. a long ride choice for the ridazz.
I'm beginning to appreciate my local rides, riding in a ridazz swarm is like being on the freeway during rush hour, not fun. But I think the attraction to a Ridazz ride is the large crowd of like minded people, and there's no arguing that a Ridazz ride has a lot of energy because of it.
Now if people could have multiple start points then meet up for the last couple of miles before the "afterparty" it would be great but somehow I think that this isn't what the people really want.
Nice try at no corking and stopping for red lights...
dave09.9.06 - 10:28 am
reply
How about corking the Ridazz instead of the cars at red lights? And corkers to keep the Ridazz in the right lane? They could wear little badges and arm bands and we could "turn in" violaters for their own good and the greater good of the Ridazz.
I'll bet that would be real popular.
dave09.9.06 - 10:44 am
reply
Had a blast last night and appreicated that the route seemed to anticipate the large number of ridazz and could fit us all. I think the Pirate ride last month got too spread out because of narrow routes, this seemed like a good mass of people all the time, even if there were less folks, it seemed like a more workable crowd. Can't wait for next month!
