Last night after stopping at a light and being hit by another cyclist (causing us both to fall, and injury to my foot) a cop yelled " Maybe you should pay more attention to the lights" as he sped off.

we need to protect ourselves from the police. not sure what to do at this point... other than to carry camcorders and capture everything that goes down. also, remain to observe everything and give them your information so that way they can't make up charges on the spot.
protect yourselves... this is a police state and we're not safe!!

theres a difference between cops being dicks and cops doing their job for arresting people who are trespassing (which last time i checked was illegal).

How many times have you trespassed? How many times have you been caught? How many times have you been arrested for it?
To the first two many, many times for me growing up. NOT ONCE DID I GET TACKLED TO THE GROUND AND THROWN IN JAIL. Even when we ran and got caught the cops just lectured us.

cops just can't slap cuffs on you because you asked a question about what's going on right? i thought they are supposed to give you a warning of some sort before arrest. i would totally agree that cops can be dicks because they have the power.

I called the station on Wilcox to ask after the internal investigation around this case. Officer Ricci fielded the call. He pointed out that I didn't have first-hand evidence that anything wrong had happened. I pointed out that I wasn't claiming I did. I heard about a complaint about an incident, and I wanted to make sure the complaints were being addressed.
Basically, I asked him what steps are they taking to make sure this doesn't happen again. I'd also like to see Officer Corona held accountable for threatening Paul with violence.
It's important to be civil. Ricci didn't fuck up, his colleagues fucked up. So while, yes, I'm forcing Officer Ricci and Lieutenant Donatoni (Watch Commander) to deal with it, I'm not yelling at them. In fact, I sympathize with them. "Look what your douchebag colleagues are making you go through." Planting the seeds of internal strife!

Because Ricci was not very good at fielding mine at all. He was Nnnnnervousss-s-s-ss. Pretty funny, actually, to hear him talking in circles, saying the same thing again and again. My mom has a word for that: "Perseverating."

sorry but I have to ask, why did you stop and watch someone getting arrested? because the guy getting arrested is a cyclist? does that mean car drivers who see another car driver getting arrested should all stop and observe their fellow car driver being arrested? It might be legal to observe an arrest, but is it necessary if you know nothing about the person or the circumstances? was the guy getting beat up or something?

My personal experience with LAPD on Midnight Ridazz has been mostly positive.
I was on the ride mentioned at the top of the page and it was pretty rad, having the police usher us politely through down town.
I have experienced LAPD being indifferent, to mellow, to supportive, to firm.
I have seen a little confrontation and I have seen a little aggressiveness towards us by the cops in person, but not much.
Recently it seems like there has been a spate of cyclist/police confrontations.
Is this because of:
- the work of a few bad cops?
- a directed change in attitude from the LAPD leadership?
- an unofficial evolving attitude within the culture of LAPD?
Are there actions by individual cyclists that are helping to fuel negative perceptions by the police on a personal, cultural, or institutional level?
Are the cops being more aggressive and confrontational than 2 years ago?
If so, why? And how do we improve that relationship?

Sucks what happened, but we should let it go. The more we pursue this, the more likely we get harassed more in the future. Nobody can deny for the most part that LAPD has been really cool with MR.

I guess there are two schools of thought...
one is that the more every cyclist stands up for other cyclists no matter the circumstances the better. make things apparent to the police that anytime they pull over a cyclist or "harass" a cyclist for a violation, it's possible that another un-related group of cyclists may stop and question the police on what they are doing an this will cause the cops to back off from policing cyclists.
The other school of thought is that being in the cop's faces agitates them into dis-liking cyclists in general which would increase the antagonistic relationship between the two and thus when cops have a chance to go over and above to help (say in the case of hit and runs or looking th other way when aparty ride is happening) they will be less inclined. according to this rational it is better to stay off the radar and hope that cops continue to allow people to ride in groups and go easy when they break traffic laws.
I'm personally with the second school of thought. I talk to cops on the regular, sometimes they let things go and sometimes that firmly put the clamp down on an event (like the drag races 3 which got shut down because there were too many people.) Most of the time though I've found that if you approach the cops in a way that is sympathetic to them they tend to let things go. the reality is that we need the help of the cops in so many other ways that harassing them and labeling them in negative ways I think depletes the general good will they may have when we openly support them.
I tell ya, on that beach party ride, there were some people apparently causing problems and conflicts with motorists that made me glad to see the cops roll up. there was some shit going down with a red pickup and some dudes who looked like they were ready to fight. I didnt understand completely what was going on but it was NOT something that should be happening. if the cops hadnt shown up when they did, I think it could have escalated.
When we ride around a drink and break laws, in my mind it's better to build up a line of "good vibe credit" with the cops. I dont think "antagonizing" them for every thing they do will ever pay off simply because they have the power to sit around and ticket everyone if they want to and they have done so. I say give the cops a break and recognize that often times these party rides ARE violating laws of the city and try to maintain a wink wink relationship with them. We need them way more than they need us.

the behavior of the police here should be no surprise.
police officer = professional bully
that said, nice pics, asparagus. if more people did stuff like that, then the police would probably follow the law a bit better while they enforce it.
