Important Metro Board Meeting this Thursday

As cyclists and citizens it is our duty to participate in the public process. Like any jurisdiction/ city/ agency, Metro does hold public meetings and bringing these issues to them during these meetings is very important. Metro’s main meeting is called the Regular Board Meeting which is held every 4th Thursday of the month. There may also be other opportunities to specifically address certain issues to the specific functions (e.g. operations) of Metro at their standing committee meetings.

This Thursday September 27, 2007 at the Regular Board Meeting on the agenda is item 26 A., which proposes to establish a Bus Accident Investigative Unit. As cyclists this is our chance to include our thoughts by speaking up on this issue about how we can influence the way bus drivers treat us. The meeting starts at 9:30 AM in the Board Room of Metro Headquarters located on the 3rd floor. The address is at One Gateway Plaza (eastside of Union Station) in Downtown Los Angeles. If you wish to speak it is advised that you submit your comment/speaker cards prior to the start of the meeting.

Navigating the Metro website is an arduous process but we managed to find a few of these important things out. However, this information and more can be found:

If involved with an incident with a Metro bus identify the following and report:

• Bus number/ line (front of bus and inside bus)
• Operator’s badge (patch on operator’s right sleeve)
• Date/ Time/ Location

PS. Bicycle Parking is located at P1 at the east end of Union station beneath Patsaouras Transit Plaza. Continue walking toward the Metro/ Metrolink cashier windows and behind the aquarium are signs that lead to bicycle parking.

By the way, it may be our duty to represent as citizens and cyclists, but they don't make it easy for us to do so with a 9:30 am meeting time.

Just in this forum alone the following issues between buses and bicycles have surfaced.

- Sharing the right lane
- Bike stolen from the front rack
- Allowing bikes inside buses, esp when not crowded.

Bicyclists are friends and advocates for public transportation. We are in
this together.
