NEW YORK RIDAZZ 2012 thread.
This is the main idea:
An Old School DIY Ridazz Trip to DETROIT, Michigan in late OCT/ early NOV.
Actual dates and places to stay are T.B.D. depending on consensus. Almost every year, Midnight Ridazz, tries to get a bunch of folks together for a trip to some city that has bicycle love. We are searching to connect with other people who are part of the bicycle movements that we can relate to and want to have fun and party with us. We want to explore and learn from other cities cultures and ways in regards to bikes and more.

New Orleans, LA
San Diego
San Francisco
and MORE!
Detroit is known for its failed economy, collapse of the U.S. auto industry, abandoned buildings, mixed cultures, and a growing bicycle conscious american city.
They have a large and growing bike scene with monthly rides, critical mass, artists, musicians, and more.
Let's include the groups we've connected from other cities in the past to join us on our trip. (Like ZooBomb and Cretins)
Yeah, the weather will be tough. The city is tough. But we like a city that has adventure and is making a slow comeback through the power of two wheels.
So let's discuss! - Who do we know in Detroit? Where can we stay? How will we get there? For how long? Is there Bike Polo? Is there bike co-ops, shops, rentals? Where or who can we visit? What rides do we want to do? Etc. Etc Etc.
This is one of the main reasons I love Midnight Ridazz, and I hope we keep doing this shit and growing connections and learning about other Ridazz in the world.

There are a lot of art lofts/studios for pretty cheap but when looking at these be sure to check if they have own bathroom and heating (many do not.. if that's important to the group). most likely flying with bike. will dig around old emails to get some info but they may be outdated (mainly shit I emailed myself as reminders)

I'm going to call this the No Naysayers / Swarm The Northwest Ride and Trip. Get wet, see the sights, ride your bike, drink some Bike Route Rye, go home again.

Also - Flights for the last week of October to First weekend of November are running at the low 330 dollar range and up. Just to give you all a ballpark of what we're dealing with here.

I don't know Doyle but tomorrow I'm driving with his housemate back west and then to Detroit. October seems a little late Detroit is cold most of the year, go soon. I'll be there for a week starting july 17th and then most of august and maybe more. Come end of august while its still nice.

Well, we are going to have to come up with a quick concensus of when to go.
I suggested Late October because of Nikki and Andres. That's the deal I worked out with my wife. If it's going to be earlier, it's going to be back to the drawing board for me.
It would be rad to be there when Larsen is there. If he lets us use the bus. The weather being nicer. Possibly free places to stay at... All these conditions would make me want to move this to late August.
However, the dust rave out in the desert is going to affect a lot of the interested people.
Other than that, can I get some other suggestions of a date?
Are most of you willing to endure a cold cold city without Larsen?
I need more feedback to go any further with plans.

I got an email back from Jason of Hub of Detroit (Thier big Bicycle Co-Op)

There are definitely a few bike groups on there worth meeting. The tiny bit I know about the Midnight Ridazz, I think you would get along with the Eastside Riders really well. Also, there is a group called GMOB you should find when you get here. They are friends with the Eastside Riders.
For a place to crash, check the basics like couch surfing, but we also have a hostel (http://www.hosteldetroit.com/) that rents bikes out to folks staying with them. So if transporting a bike is an issue, that is an option.
Hopefully that gives you a good start."

im on southwest checking flights and theyre ok
round trip from lax to detroit with plane changes. i hate changing planes but its alright this time. its gonna run someone around 330.

i checked la to chicago and the train from chicago to detroit. pricing is 318 with both roundtrip tickets for train and flight.

Changing the plans to this would make things more complicated planning wise to get everybody together. .. However, I personally think it sounds fun and would like to do it.
We need to make sure everyone is on board with this idea. Or, we need to have plans locked down for people who only arrive to Detroit to ensure a place to stay and stuff, bikes, etc.

well, either way. I think it sounds feasible and fun. What do you think we should do? I, personally can't take too much time off or want to. A full 7days is about my limit, depending on how it effects airfare. But I don't want the trip to revolve around my schedule but for the consensus.

Staying in Chicago is not cheap. I would love to go back, but it depends how many people are going. Hotel/motel rooms are small and you can't just cuddle puddle with your bike and 10 other people in one room....
If somehow we find a place through airbnb willing to take us and splitting the cost evenly within us is reasonable, i am in.
right now trying to decide if i am flying or taking the train (entire way)

I guess what would help is if I could post a week long calendar of main events here for Ridazz to know where to be and when to be there. I'll start working on that. We need a VISUAL AID for everybody.

Lifes great. got a factory job. Dont know many ridaz out here as i have been working alot.
Babys due any day now. Critical mass here wasnt very friendly the one time I did attend.
Ride met quickly rode 30 miles then broke up right away when they stopped. Ill have to work while you guys are here but ill try to take halloween through the weekend off. Probably wont make it to critical mass. Ill bring the new moms so we can show em how we do

I would like to get a better idea of how many people are interested in renting a house who are confirmed and willing to put $$ down for it. As of right now i have off 10/26-11/5 but those dates are flexible and will depend on train/air fare and where I end up staying once i reach Detroit. are you guys going to Chicago? let's go stay at my parents house in south j. they'd totally put us up (plenty of couches to crash on & a huge backyard for camping) and my mom will cook massive amounts of italian food. we can ride over the ben franklin bridge into philly (15 minute ride) we can train it to NYC or even do a day ride "down the shore" its pretty vacant at the jersey shore.......

I wanted to take the train and fly back but "PC" mentioned to me that the train going from Chicago to Detroit (LAX-CHI stop.. hop on some other bullshit CHI-DET) does not take checked baggage
i just checked:

you get to take 2 carry on bags for free but i doubt my bike seat, handlebars, tools, locks etc will be allowed to be taken as a carry on. i may get creative with wrapping my bike frame and wheels and check those items without the extra weight/size limit price but i am not just tossing my bike in a bag and calling it art or sports equipment. i usually pad and wrap the fuck out of all the parts with tubing or my clothes and put a bolt between the fork. all that shit makes the bag bulky.

now that i know i can't take my bike on the train from Chicago to Detroit, i am thinking of flying round-trip

yes i will try and fly with my bike....but im building a swing bike so it can be easier to fold up and take on a plane and its pretty much art cause it looks dumb =) also its a piece of shit so no worries if TSA fucks with it or dents it. FREAK BIKE WIN. and for the tips Joker is gonna email me soon for pics/intructions on packing it and getting it threw the bag claim.
