Teen cyclist killed in Pacoima accident; driver arrested on suspicion of DUI
October 2, 2010 | 11:42 am
A motorist who struck and killed a cyclist early Saturday at a Pacoima intersection was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter while driving under the influence of alcohol, police said.
Shawn Fields, 26, was driving a 2007 Saturn vehicle northbound on Laurel Canyon Boulevard when he collided with a 17-year-old boy riding a bicycle about 2 a.m., said LAPD Officer Norma Eisenman. The impact threw the boy and his bike across the intersection, she said.
The victim was transported to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center but died from his injuries, Eisenman said.

Is there a Valley Ghost Bike committee which can make this happen?
I think its time we organize loose groups in areas of our city to see that a ghost bike goes up every time there is a fatality.
I'm down in Long Beach, and some of us have been putting up ghost bikes (4 so far) when needed. It takes a little planning and some white paint, but the monument is very powerful and worthwhile.

Im assuming the driver stopped despite the DUI, or else it might have been noted as a hit and run. We'll probably know more soon.

its funny that people comments from this link http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2010/10/teen-cyclist-killed-in-pacoima-accident-driver-arrested-on-suspicion-of-dui.html that the parents are to be blame and not the driver is just really ridiculous. According to the L.A. County Sheriff's inmate locator page, Shawn Fields was bailed out last night around 6pm. $100,000 bail, which means he or his family came up with 10% of the total amount to bail him out through a bail bondsman.
No court case number yet.
Next court date is October 27 at the San Fernando Courthouse in Dept. S at 8:30am.

I'm bumping this to remind you guys how serious this really is.
Someone that goes on rides that a few of us know died on the streets due to an irresponsible driver. It really bothers me to know that this has actually come to pass again.
Be extra careful when you ride alone late, stay super alert of cars, use bright lights and wear some reflective gear.
I call for Safety Ride 3.

It's a long ways to ride for LACM, but you can always suggest it and if you ride the front to take it there, but I don't think it's reasonable for LA critical mass to go that far. Tomorrow is SFVCM. Maybe that would be more appropriate.

Does anyone know exactly where the accident happen? Was it on Laurel Cyn & Chamberlin because I pass by there yesterday and saw a memorial set up. That piece of street is mighty sketchy. There's is no side walk and the road narrows, so the youngster had to ride on the street.

THis is bullshit. The guy is drunk and kills someone, and the bail is 100K? This guy was in jail for less than 24hours. You can get all the info at LASD.ORG. goto the inmate locator and type in "shawn fields".... We need to get together and protest at the courthouse/ get the media involved.

Not exactly sure what needs to be done other than painting it all white and not exactly sure where the location is. If anyone can help me out we can get the ghost bike put out on the street by Monday.

So I wasn't able to catch all of the hearing, but it's actually not over yet.
Today: witnesses from the scene, medical examiner from coroner's office, two police officers.
Only caught the cross examination of the last witness, who saw the damaged vehicle after the incident. He followed it back to the registered owner's address.
Coroner testified that immediate cause of death was a broken neck, but there were several other serious injuries including damaged lungs, ruptured spleen, broken ribs, pelvis and leg.
According to one of the officers today, Fields was asleep at home by the time they arrived at the location where the vehicle was registered. He wouldn't wake up after knocking and banging on the windows from where they could see him sleeping. He admitted having been at the Roosevelt in Hollywood that night drinking.
Tomorrow: more police officers, including detective that interviewed Fields later at the police station and the officer that administered the alcohol/breath test.
To be continued...
San Fernando Courthouse - Dept. E (third floor) @ 11am. It will break at noon, and then continue at 1:30 pm into the afternoon.

Yesterday after the presentation of evidence, Judge Beverly O'Connel ordered that Shawn Patrick Fields will be held to answer for the three felonies he was charged with.
This means the judge believed there was sufficient evidence for the case to be heard in front of a jury and go to trial.
On March 30, 2011 at 8:30 in Dept. E, he will be arraigned again. They may set a trial date that day but I doubt it.
He is still out on bail but ordered to return on that date.
Some interesting notes:
According to the arresting officer, Fields volunteered at statement before being taken to the police station that he shouldn't have driven home because he had too much to drink at a wrap up party at the Roosevelt in Hollywood. He also saw many bottles of various alcoholic beverages inside Field's house.
Also, the officer that administered the breath test at the station noted that his BAC was .14/.15 at about 4:15 a.m. The collision occurred about three hours earlier.
The investigating officer who interviewed Fields also testified. Fields told him he got to the party around 10pm and drank a long island ice tea, a red label whiskey, a gin and tonic, beer and some water before leaving. After walking out, he had a bacon wrapped hot dog on the street, threw up on himself, debated whether to drive home, waited in his car for a while then finally drove. He did not have a recollection of driving home, but recalled he may have hit something because remembered being at a stop light close to home and looking at sparkly dust on his arms.

We are all better off with this poor excuse for a human off the street.
Hopfully the jury will agree.
Meantime, no doubt he's out there driving around, throwing up hot dogs and wondering about sparkly stuff on his arm.

i can't believe this guy. he drank that much, threw up and still decided to drive. a taxi would have probably cost $40-$60 and he would have got home safe and this young man would be alive. he wouldn't be going to prison and facing his liberty taken away. come on people! grow up! don't drink and drive.
i feel so bad for this young man and his family. i hope justice is served. we as cyclists need to be vigilant and never fear the road. it's ours too. lets take care of ourselves.
don't drink and drive or ride too, it's just unsafe.
