Thinking about a Century

Hey MR,
I am thinking about attempting my first century ride, so i am looking for ideas on routes. I live in the 818 so im leaning toward utilizing the river path.
your thoughts?

Have fun. I find the river paths to get kind of boring after a long while. I'm sure somebody will post some ideas soon.

I'm not looking to do too many hills this first time out. i just wanna see if i can handle the distance.

Consider jumping on to one of the planned centuries and riding with a group. If not at least try to rope in a friend or 2 to do it with you.
The Dark Century is a great one to start with. The route is pretty flat and relatively little traffic to deal with.
If you haven't done a metric yet (62km) i'd start with that and work your way up.

yes, but not until i build my geared tall bike, and not until i survive a century on a regular bike.

I have at least one friend who will go if i don't find a group. Only reason i would avoid the group ride is because i am kinda slow. so i'll end up going solo after an hour or so anyway.

in training for a century one does not need to ride over 75 miles at once.
in a century the key thing to your survival is proper nutrition. (or with any long endurance ride for that matter)

Metric century=100 kilometers or, 62 miles.
Do this first, and take Borfo with you!
We drop nobody during a dark century, but if you're struggling early you'll be encouraged to catch a bus.
Man, I'd be stoked if Borfo does the next DC with us!

DC always draws out a few newbies and some slower riders.
it would be a good choice.
I think the time i did it came out to about 10 hours with stops.
except for the not sleeping part, i found DC to be a lot less exhausting
because there was no sun beating down on us.

Go west young man
Head out towards Thousand oaks / Newbury Park via Agoura rd.
Go down Portero road to Cammarillo then head towards the coast.
Go south down PCH past Point Magu and keep rollin till Santa Monica
Take San Vicente to Sepulveda blvd and back through the pass to the Valley.
This is around 100 miles, lots of open road, good vistas, and kick back spots.

I can get you one of the easiest (or you can map it) and simplest century routes we do every year. Santa Clarita to San Buenaventura beach and back...hardly any climbing, safe, simple route.

do the dark century. river paths may be boring but no traffic/stops makes for a good pace.
