appreciation thread. I know weve got some raza here so lets see who really appreciates this body wiggling beat that makes you feel like tapping you chanclas. Al(digablesoul)? im looking at you buddy.
there should be a ride to it. I've also seen the panamerican on rampart. the place looks legit considering the raza lined up on the weekends. its funny cus in some hoods on the weekends you always hear this music waaaaaay in the distance. and you know its a big ass party with a bunch of mocosos running around past their bedtime. the only thing on the menu is either a taquero or someones mom making pupusas. das the shit. doesn't happen in the valley to much. I heard it recently when I went to south central to visit a friend and ther were three parties on the same block. all playing cumbia and merengue. im rambling...

cumbia by default is a mixture of different cultural groups so i dont think the amount of raza lined up outside of a club is a good yardstick to measure it by. there is also so many different types, some more appealing to me than others.
but yeah most of the cumbia that is heard around LA is mexican cumbia that has more of a synth sound and whose vocals have a certain character that make it distinct (more ballad like and operatic than say the original columbian cumbia)
as a sample of how varied cumbia can be here's what happens when peruvians discover surf rock, put down the coke lines, and pick up a bong.
Has anyone heard that song that has this just ONE organ note repeating, with a band behind it, but thats the majority of the song - this one organ note... Its on an 8th count, then double times, then breaks it down, and then you're dancing? WTF IS THE NAME OF THAT SONG?? ANYONE? Someone has to know this song...
Good stuff!! I knew there was a difference but couldn't pin point it.
@sancho1
I always wondered about the panamerican... that has been there forever!! There's a bunch of places on Sunset too... Never been but I bet there's a bunch of hotties that come out to dance...
We can have a cumbia ride... and at a stop... have someone have a mini dance class on the basics... and then dance!! How awesome would that be? Awesome!! We need to promote to the ladies so more can come out. The westside and their parking lot dance parties will be nothing compared to the valleys version!! We'll senor sancho lead the class!!
C U M B I A!!!!!! If you've been to a Taco Tuesday ride in the westside you know we do cumbias and a cumbia/quiceañera ride has been in the talks. I would love to see a massive CUMBIA ride ending in a large parking lot dance. I promise the girls will show up when they hear cumbia and it's just up to the boys to loosen up and dance too.
a guevo!!! we should definitely do it chuntaro style. tururuuuuuuu!!!
correction to a previous statement. most cumbia heard here in la is guaranteed from sonora dimamita or some variation of that band. that sound is most def colombian cumbia all the way even celso piña plays it in the style of the vallenato, witch is a chiller style of cumbia. I should know this, I spent 7 years of my life in an orqusta tropical playing the patron on the conga. the mexican style didn't really devrlop untill DJ's started to play it in dance halls in mx DF and other places in events called "tardeadas". ask you parents kids they'll tell you all about it. and all that didn't happen untill the early 70's when people got tired of dancing to perez prado and his mambos. it was aimed at the new generations caught between the traditions of boleros, mambos and the increasing popularity of SALSA. salsa Was much too formal and a lot harder to dance while drunk. cumbia aims for the party. salsa aims for the strict dancer... I have spoken.

Keeping it cumbia for 1 sabroso year! Haters need 2 know its taco tuesday with los padrinos de honor xl and cesar. Arriba los tacos! Rockin the dance floor that is the westside!
i made my observation through my own experiences and also dont make them in anyway to disparage mex cumbia.
yeah dinamita is very well represented and has in some ways become the "gate way drug" to cumbia for many
and yeah all cumbia is going to sound like columbian cumbia cause well as you know thats where its from.
in general im saying that their are various styles of cumbia, they are hard to pin down, and some IMHO are better than others....case in point kumbia kings = meh. in LA what you hear on the radio and in clubs varies but is generally dominated by the mexican variation (that as you pointed out is of course influenced by its columbian origins). this may not be the case for you but hey we cant all go to the same bars.
enough of this though....lets settle this with a dance off
i'll dress like rigo tovar and you like chico che!
.....oh and i would love nothing more than to see a rolling cumbia dance party!

We should cover electric avenue cumbia style. Leo's on congas, I'll play the whistle, giz can play the cowbell. skid can play the organ. we'll all sing and BAM!
That is a great video.... I've always wanted to move like those guys in the band. Light on their feet.... But man... the way the ladies move... CHHHHEEEEYAAAOO!
heres a funny thing. someone ask for sonora dynamita.? well this is whats left of them. the original founders of the band split from the original female vocalists and split the name up in the process. these days you can find as many as 15 different off shoots of the band all under sonora dynamita when the actual founders and composers are known as sonora show. the band i was in played all over LA for a while. this is a pic of us at the rumba room at citywalk. the girl in the middle is the same girl in the video minus our ugly asses. we actually taught her how to sing and perform this song. she later left the group and got picked up by the actual sonora show.

'Reina de la Pista' is the 2nd video by Summer of
Cumbia from their debut album Summer of Cumbia.
Summer of Cumbia is
made of up riders from the Taco Tuesdays bicycle club.
'Reina de la Pista' feature stills from the
recording and fun times that SOC had while making the album. The video also
shows scenes from the album release party held in conjunction with the Midnight
Ridazz Taco Tuesdays Bicycle Club.
On Aug 18, Taco Tuesday held a Cumbia Ride to help SOC
celebrate the release of the album Summer of Cumbia and the first video
and single 'Taco Tuesdays' The show took place on the Manhattan beach pier at
11pm. The backing tracks were played on El Sabroso's T-mobile side kick, which
was hooked up to a PA on bike. The bike PA had 2 wireless microphone and huge
speakers strapped to the back. SOC rocked the ride until 1am.
PARTY MACHINE!!!! Bring out the chelas compadres...y adonde estan Las sexi, freaky, skonkas lol, cumbianas at?? Puro pinche party machine mi paisa's...y que pasa en Los rodeos adonde estarian: ::)))))
this would be amazing. I can't ,however, seem to find the time. Love riding and love cumbia. This is something best left to the experts. Taco tuesday and SOC put it down real nice. It would be good theme though.
