It's a bike ride.
Started by user nathansnider and user theroyalacademy.
It meets every Wednesday at 8:30pm
at California Donuts #21.
We ride at 9pm.
We'll endeavor to return before the last red line trains (around midnight).
This is the new thread for it.
Please do not post to the old thread any more, as that could be become confusing.
This is the new thread for it.
Thank you.
Lots of fail tonight (sorry we lost you, Michelle and Max; glad you got back okay), but it still turned out pretty fun. Too bad the park ranger made us skip the much more interesting way we were going to leave the park (we would've actually been outta there much quicker too!).
Oh, and I just looked again and apparently the ostrich and alligator farms were just down the street from Selig Zoo, across Mission from Eastlake (now Lincoln) Park. You can find information on those (and Indian Village) on that lincolnheightsla site.
Michelle! Just heard from Esther that apparently you had some sort of car-related incident coming down Barham(?). Apparently, you were okay but shook up(?). Gah. Now I really wish we had stayed closer together going down there.
Thanks to the pilgrims who came out tonight, and thanks to the Casa de Angelopes for providing the entertainment. Fare thee well, Skidmarcus! Here is the route, and since we are now getting into the habit of posting map images in the threads, this is what it looked like:
after SS1 all i managed to do at work was have breakfast and stare at a screen hoping some work would get done. Then somehow managed to ride with Tren Way and see FUNDERSTORM. This year i was fine until i saw this and thought it was Wednesday and freaked out momentarily. Anyway, missing Passage tomorrow to go watch a band that will NOT perform this song.

I have not recovered from this song. I hear it constantly and involuntarily. It has been burned deep into my head. It makes me laugh, it also disturbs. Mostly disturbs, because I don't know if time itself will be enough to recover from it.

Well, it started as sheer laziness but turned into a proper theme. Here's the route. Nathan asked if it looked like a saxophone and I said it did not. But, now that I look at it again, I will upgrade that to an emphatic "MAYBE?" (like a saxophone that has been run over by a truck?). Okay, yeah, I know it's a stretch; I was just happy to have found three George Michael sites.
Thanks to all who came out last night in the rain! Here is where we rode:
Here is some more about how the Chinese got screwed over in death as well as in life. And here is the history of the Molokan "Jumpers and Leapers" and how they got screwed over (though mostly just in life) when they got to L.A..
Didn't want to post last week's route until after Friday (for obvious reasons). Almost forgot to do it altogether. Speaking of forgetting, I tried to reconstruct our route to and from Hollenbeck as best as possible, but I was just making up the route as I went along and, as we know, my memory is not so great.
Made me miss the 36-42 miles that Passage had going for several weeks/months(?)
Actually I was beat too I think the stopping/scouting took a lot of our time and energy. I don’t even remember if I got Victory Donuts or split off!

Once again, Nathan emerged victorious. He won the scavenger hunt (with John). He has won bingo. Will he three-peat when we do our Geriatric Decathalon?
Bingo master, can you post a picture of your winning spoke card? I meant to take a photo before we left the donut shop. But I didn't.
Damn looks like I a missed a good adventure! I thought it would be canceled and I am not much of a golfer so I agreed to have someone come by and look at my kitchen counters the following day (which meant I had to stay up drinking whiskey so I can clean my place because I am not sure my landlord buys the “please excuse the mess, I just got back from camping” excuse I give with each of his visits and because I love the place and I really like him, I get embarrassed by my mess). Well, at least this time if you come by with cake, I will not ask you to stand outside and invite you over for tea! Haha

Incidentally, we'll be passing within a block of your house on our outbound leg (and within a few miles of it on our way back), so y'know, if you have the time and inclination to join us for a little while, then please, by all means...
Thanks to everybody who came out last night, and especially huge thanks to Andy for lending me a bike! Here is where we rode:
It is not, as some had supposed, horn-shaped, except maybe that northernmost point, which is exactly where the first flat happened. Coincidence? Perhaps it was not so much a matter of us finding the [t]horn of Gabriel, but of it finding us.
I'm gonna go apologize to the golfcart security guard that got dropped BC he couldn't keep up. And sean shoot me the info for sat.
drunkenstyles1@msn.com. Thanks for my donutzz3 replacement as well...
My bike done broke. And I am a repair n00b. I think I can fix it, but I don't know where to get the actual part (a shifter cable ... mine snapped). Can you guys recommend where to go to get a cable of the proper length? Do the co-ops have cables they can sell or do I need to go to a bike shop?
I also got a wicked flat, 2-inch nail through the tread and out the sidewall!
Gotta break my promise to start coming out regularly again until I get the shifter fixed... dollar bill seems to be holding the tire together well enough.
Yeah, that happened to me. Any shop would have a cable. Super easy to buy one and then re-thread the cable yourself (10 min. tops). All you'll need is a cable cutter to shorten the length once you install the cable. That will get it ride-able
A shifter cable is easy to replace, but I would suggest taking it to the kitchen or a shop if you're not keen on doing it yourself. Replacing the cable is easy enough but you'll likely have to fine tune the shifting to get it precise.
As for the tire, a boot (dollar bill or snack bar wrapper) will get you home, but I'd be hesitant to continue riding it. Chances are, it will hold up fine, but it could well suddenly explode under load since the casing is likely compromised (especially on the sidewall). I've gotten similar damage to three of my tires and all three were rideable afterward but I ended up retiring 2 of the 3 just to be safe. It sucks especially if the tires were new-ish but if you keep riding it you'll constantly think and worry about it, plus if it does blow out on a 40mph descent you're not going to be happy.

Went to the Bike Kitchen tonight and got a cable and new housing (housing got lost in transit somehow). I was able to do the whole job myself!! Beaming with pride, even got the shifting down mostly on my own.
But didn't get out until after the ride started. :[
Next week. :]
tfunk:
You're right, I don't want to be thinking and worrying about it. I will get a new tire. These were cheap and they're old, anyway.
Here's where we went tonight, including our little "detour" when I got a bit turned around, but not including the other dimension, for which I have no map.
Does anyone know what the concrete structure where we took the pic is? Having now searched for devil's gate damn, I know that wasn't it. Some sort of overflow?

Well, I think this is a matter of semantics a bit, in that it is not part of the dam in the strict sense of holding water back, but it is part of the dam inasmuch as being necessary to control the flow of water (and being all one big, connected structure).
I think it is called a "spillway." Yes, basically an overflow, it directs high water flows to the side, away from the center of the dam, to relieve pressure on it.
(Based on my intuition and a quick Google search, I am 95% sure the information above is correct. But I am definitely no hydrologic engineer.)
thanks for the adventure. i got some el ron on me in the tunnel i think, thankfully it came off in the shower. i would like to know more about this happening at the devil's gate portal - my googling yielded little info on it
The worst passage ride ever! I've been mountain hiking , donut eating , and now scuba diving with this ride. Who's gonna pay my dry cleaning bill? And 2flats tonite :) good shit nathan&sean...
I got almost two hours of video before my camera stopped working. I was able to get the vids onto my computer but the camera doesn't seem to want to work as a camera anymore. Too much shaking and water got on it, but here's hoping it will come back to life!
Anyway, I'll pick out the good parts and slap 'em together into something fun! Lots is too shaky or dark to use but there is enough good stuff to put together a decent account of our combined misery and joy.
Yes, those are just approximations. You can see the actual curvature on the city's GIS site (if you zoom in closer than 1:10,000), but I am both lazy and secretive, so I just used the streets as a guide wherever I could.
I got home with every intention of going out to look for the phone, but then I lost my nerve, and the idea of riding up the slip-n-slide three times in as many days sort of lost its charm. My mistake, I think, was taking off my boots while I made coffee. Going back out would have required putting those boots back on, which simply was not going to happen.
I think it was in Sun Tzu's lesser known treatise The Art of Folly where he said "If you really want to carry through with a terrible idea, you have to just go for it without hesitation or any time to think it over." Words to heed.
Anyway, I'll probably go searching with Al tomorrow instead. Despite everyone's doubts, I think it'll be easy to find.

What's he gonna do, grow sea monkeys in the motherfucker? Leave it down there for my mouse friend to use.
Assuming my mouse friend is still alive, that is...after racing me up the path for a while, he suddenly broke left, crossed in front of my wheel, and got swept away by the downstream current. Mice can swim, right? And they know how to use smartphones, right?

good thing the program (MS paint/bitmap) I was using fucked everything up when i got to the printers. the file was too large and the date which was on the bottom right hand corner was cut off.

Thought some people might be interested in this... Photographer Brice Bischoff did a series on the Bronson Caves (i.e. "Batcave") that we visited on Passage 80.
Fuck. I think I have to be in. I mean, how can one miss Passage’s 100th ride? And DONUTS. I have had THREE donuts today to ready myself for this. Actually did a century last weekend but no donuts were involved. Pastries and cakes though.. and wine and beer. Hmm maybe I can do it after all!
My legs felt great. My back was ok even after lugging 35lbs on my back. I was really excited for this Passage ride, but this morning my legs felt like jelly after being totally ok for an entire week.
I am out of Trystero coffee and hope to get some before tomorrow morning.

Chillin in Whittier narrows camped out just off the rio hondo path with the passage ride on mile 85 eating freshly made doughnuts!! This is the best surprise evar. Nathan and Sean my hats off to you guys. And to Peter and Jackie for actually mixing up the dough, firing up the grill and making fucking donuts!! Delicious!
What fun. Nathan and Sean, you guys are civic heroes. I hope you guys will consider donating your brains to science so that the maps and routes that lie within can be preserved for the centuries beyond this one!

I'm sort of late replying here, but yeah, let me just echo everything that's already been said. That was just about as close to perfect as a century could get: amazing weather, well-inflated tires, a great group of riders and no shortage of surprises (not to mention conveniently-timed garbage trucks). Thanks to everyone who came out for #100, and extra special thanks to Peter and Jackie for bringing the fifth element for us out there in the wilderness!
I think that standing out there in the narrows surrounded by those weird hummocks and watching the donuts fry up was the point where the ride fully crossed the line into "epic" territory - absurdly memorable; memorably absurd. May it set the standard for rides to come.
Thanks for the info, I checked out the website & I wasn't able to find a ride that's compatible w/ my schedule.. I work on the weekends.. I need a ride during the weekdays.. Sorry if I wasn't specific the first time. Thanks anyways..

OK, so here (roughly) is this week's route, minus a couple diversions that I couldn't manage to map without my phone's browser crashing. Sinister algorithms at work, surely... No screenshot because the bot can't hack it.
But anyhow, thanks to everybody who came out this week. Bleep bloop.
It's hard to say because I don't have a final route yet. I'd say it is in the 1 to 2 donut range. Definitely short, but there might be a little climbing.
Thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate our second anniversary. And a super big thanks to Roadblock for screening shirts and stuff for us. That was awesome.
We did a lot more stopping than usual this week, but still managed to squeeze a respectable 14.5 miles in. It looked a little something like this:
I figured the easiest way to get people larger versions of their portraits was to dump them in my rarely-used Flickr account. If you want yours, you can find them here.
(If anyone REALLY wants them larger still, get in touch with me and we can make that happen. But I imagine the size on Flickr should be sufficient for most uses.)
Katie (or Enzo), if you're out there, John says you didn't leave my arm warmers with him after the century. Would love to get those back at some point. Thanks!
hope you don't mind... I passed yours and Nathan's info on to an LA Times reporter who seemed to sincerely look at the good side of Midnight Ridazz... ahem... there IS a ride tomorrow right? I don't see it posted....

Thanks to everyone for coming out and putting up with satisfying uphills and unsatisfying downhills. Short can be fun too! (I'm feeling too lazy to take a cap of the route and post it here; just follow the link.)
And, Bertha, you may be glad to hear that I got punished for taking us up that hill: at the top I hit a metal plate and went down. Anyway, good to see you out there again. John suggests, for next time, get a basket and bring Biscuit. I would definitely plan a special "bring your dog to ride day" route.

I fail.
I made it three miles thinking I wouldn't need to bring spare tubes.
Alas, I only made it three miles and I get a pinch flat.
And I was looking forward to >30 miler tonight.
I will be there for the next one.
Or I will be
"TBD (it's kinda like BBD, but less B and more T)"
And this is why I miss you guys!
Will be in PDX and SF for the next few months, I hear they ride bikes up there. See ya'lls when (Err..if) I get back! I should have my legs back by then....♥
I'll be honest and admit that I don't exactly remember all the turns I made tonight. But I think it was a little bit like this. Thanks for coming out and dealing with a slightly more stoppy ride than usual. Though there were a lot of new faces, so you folks wouldn't know. But it was. Hi.
Maybe I'm just paranoid because I don't normally schedule any stops at all -- I just have us stop when logical/necessary -- whereas last night I had planned two in short succession.
Oh, and looking over that map I drew last night, I realized that I forgot that I took us up around the Convention Center. I am sure no one cares, but for our own archival purposes, this is a corrected route map.
I've had the same experience as a ride leader. I've been stressing about some delay or wrong turn and meanwhile everyone is none the wiser and enjoying themselves.
Sean your high standards that stem from perfectionism are what set you apart from the other rides... no matter how sloppy a ride may seem to you.. don't worry.. we all love you! Last nights ride was a great ride... a nice solid medium pace... it was a super-great ride.. AGAIN!
speaking of a well "oiled" machine, let's put some "dough" together for this http://gizmodo.com/5825687/this-180-wondermachine-makes-donuts-automagically
I like calling this ride The Ride With No Stops… so yeah I dunno. I guess I did mind. I stop for donuts but that is about it.
We did have a mechanical, so Sean, at least the longer stop was warranted.
Donuts > patbingsu (well, at least the place I went to last night)
Lesson learned. I will return to my usual 2-3 donuts in mouf routine.
Kakihara responding to a comment by liquidpremium

Yeah, I wasn't even talking about the duration anyway (mechanicals are going to happen sometimes), but just the two stops within 4 miles of each other. That's cool on something like the typography ride, but was totally unnecessary last night. Anyhoo, glad people had a good time.
Just in case it is not clear that we are all friends joking with each other (because I know such things are often very much not at all clear on the internet), well, we are. My "no crying in baseball" joke aside, The Passage welcomes all serious complaints.
(Though complaints about hills will admittedly fall on more or less deaf ears. There will be hills.)
Thanks for coming out this week, everybody! Huge thanks to Amanda for saving the day with the sugar and the utensils and the whatnot, because when life throws you lemons but no sugarcane or pitcher, you're just left with lemon juice. At first the night was like this, and then it was like this, but when all was said and done, it was like this:
Still in PDX, really like the dump idea, I think I know where 2 of them will be and tat's fun riding. After a few days of exploring Portland by bike I think it's high time for a Portland passage ride.
Sorry to cut it short this week, but someone getting injured just throws me out of sorts. We hit the important landfill; the other one is far less exciting.
Thanks so much for the first aid and making sure I didn't break anything. I got a few stitches, the gash went all the way to the bone, which is why the pain was so sharp. But, I can walk fine and there is surprisingly no bruising.

Oh, right, I was going to post some supplementary reading materials to give some context to my half-remembered stories for the various stops. Here you go:
Hey guys, Vernon here. This was actually my first LA ride since I moved here (from the valley) 3 weeks ago. I had a blast! You're all a pretty considerate group of riders and it seems like you're trying to give bicyclists a good name in this city. So right on.
I'm a big fan of expanding geographical definitions. For example, one could expand one's definition of "the Valley" to allow for multiple referents, such that all possible modifiers (e.g. Central, Shenandoah, San Fernando and Uncanny) are implied simultaneously. I think this is the perfect strategy for avoiding confusion, as it ensures that all instances of the word refer to the same composite geographical/notional location. N'est-ce pas?
But seriously, even though I don't think I talked to Vernon on the ride, I get the impression that he meant the other Valley - you know, the one that the rest of California means when they say "the Valley?" Or maybe not.
Either way, The Passage Ride welcomes residents of all Valleys, canny or otherwise.
I mean this also in the nicest possible way... having lived there for 5 long years... and just on the other side of the hill from the valley for the other portion of my life... The Valley is just simply not part of LA... it should have seceded when it had the chance. LA should break up into smaller and smaller segments really. Local govt is where it's at.

Roadblock: Do you know that if the san fernando valley was all of a sudden separate from LA county and became its own city, it would be the 5th largest city in the USA?
Also, meant to post up a link to info on the ride we sort of covered. Though, if you look at his route, we actually didn't do all that much of it. It was mostly my twisty trail of trying to catch up to them and then an improvised return trip.
Alright TROLL stop it. If anyone's going to post links about a quickening it'd better damn well link to a Highlander video with queen playing in the background.

Nah, we showed up around 11, long after they would have gone home. There was one car there, but I think we might have interrupted their party. Nice little park, though.
Our tour of duty tonight took us to these ports of call. Or, at least, that's how I remember it.
What little information I managed to cobble together for the ride (and a whole lot more that I left uncobbled) can be found in this wonderful book I am currently reading called City of Nets: A Portrait of Hollywood in the 1940's.
Thanks Nathansnider and theroyalcademy for sharing your epic routes..at the moment I am unable to attend your ride because of work, but I sometimes do your routes on my spare time and Im always checking out your website.Great info!!

This ride is fun, yet with a sprinkle of mature professionalism. I love the great communication, and useability of finding friends. The routes are a balance of creativity, challenge, and have their placid moments. I wish i could "Yelp" about this weekly ride, for it gets 5 stars out of 5!!!!!
Hey. Sorry I couldn't quite make it out tonight. Got hit by a car on the way and spent the evening at the hospital instead. Everything is okay. Minor concussion and a lot of sore stuff. Girl made a left turn into me. IN A FUCKING PT CRUISER. I feel more demoralized than anything. At least until the pain kicks in tomorrow.
Damn that sucks. I wouldn't be surprised if a disproportionate number of pedestrian/cyclist/animal accidents vs car happen with PT cruisers. My mom used to have one, and the A pillars are enormous, making for visibility gaps between the windshield and side windows. Big traditional blind spots as well. All around a shitty car, and even more so now that one has hit you.
I can attest to the crappiness of the PT Cruiser. The rental place gave me one on two occasions, the second time after I specifically said I wanted anything but a PT Cruiser, but it was all they had available (I wonder why).
Sucks you got hit, man, hope you're okay. Good way to score some painkillers, though.

Hope everyone is feeling all transcendent after tonight's ride. Here's where we went:
Here's Wilburn Burchette's entry on Discogs. Not too much information there, but if you click through to the detailed view of some of the cover art, there is some great text on the backs of most albums.
And if you search like so, you can find several of his albums out there in the bloggyspheres. My favorite is Psychic Meditation Music -- two side-long, extremely ambient pieces.
Relevant to your interests: while doing some random web searching, I found this nifty blog post that alexdc wrote about the Passage a few months ago; pretty pictures and kind words, there.
How easy will it be to bail early on the ride tonight and get to downtown around 11pm? Isaac has a cd release show tonight at la cita and it'd be nice to be able to both ride and go to the show.
I would probably call it a 2: average... but average for us. Not ridiculously hard, but not "easy."
The route is VERY short (one of our shortest ever), but does indeed have rather a lot of hills, all of the very steep (but short) variety. And A LOT of stairs. It could be hard on ye legs, I guess. But probably not hard on your soul, like I sometimes like to do (e.g. Loma Vista).
...For the record, here's how I tend to break it down (Nathan might disagree):
1 donut = short and easy and likely educational; bring your friends
2 donuts = average: slightly challenging
2.5 donuts = slightly challenging and probably long; it's "an adventure"
3 donuts = "Why do they hate me?"
4 donnever= less a ride than a buffet
That's the route from last week. The route is never given out until after the ride is over--it keeps it more exciting that way. Last week's ride was short, but we dropped a lot of people once we headed up into the hills.

In case anyone else was curious, that big house next to the Cecil "Chip" Murray circle was the Rindge House. http://bigorangelandmarks.blogspot.com/2007/12/no-95-rindge-house.html
That was so cool of the Police Academy to give us an unscheduled, middle-of-the-night tour. That's the kind of stuff you can't plan! Hope you all had as much fun seeing that as I did.
What you can plan is a route without hills. I, however, did the opposite. Nathan, I also totally remembered the originally planned mileage wrong. It was closer to thirty miles, not 25. So, with a few miles shaved off, we ended up around your guess at 27 and change. I guess by now I too should know that I am a liar.
I'm not going to post an image of this week's route because there are already way too many images in this ridiculously slow thread. But here's a link to it.
Is there going to be a ride tonight? I'm used to not seeing the specific description until moments before 9, but not having the ride listed at all on the sidebar has me concerned.
Here was our route this week. I'm not going to post an image partly to keep the thread from getting any slower but mostly because my computer is acting up.
If you need to visualize the route, just imagine a line that goes north, then east, then west, then south, then north, then west, then south then west, then south, then north, then east, then southeast, then northeast, then southeast, then northeast, then east, then west, then northwest, then south, then west, then north, then northwest, then southwest, then northwest, then west, then north, then northwest, then north, then west, then north.
