The Passage of a Few People Through a Rather Brief Moment in Time #83 - Crouching Bunny, Hidden Dragon
02.2.11
One or more persons during a certain period drop their usual motives for movement and action, their relations, their work and leisure activities, and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the encounters they find there.
It's a bike ride.
Started by user nathansnider and user theroyalacademy.
It meets every Wednesday at 8:30pm at California Donuts #21.
We ride at 9pm.
We'll endeavor to return before the last red line trains (around midnight).
See how we move.
On the second year of this bike ride, you might expect:
- more inconvenient passageways
- more full moon picnics
- perhaps more "cover" versions of other people's rides, performed with amateurish enthusiasm
- certainly more amateurish enthusiasm
- disorientation
- reorientation
- pool halls
- bowling alleys
- dance parties
- karaoke
- imaginary histories
- scavenging for fun and sustenance
- more geocaching
- more oblique strategies
- more Oulipian constraints
- traffic median tea parties
Furthermore:
- A medium pace (maybe not for beginners; certainly not a hustle)
- We're not in a rush; we don't need to run every light.
- 25-ish miles this week; a few hills
- Victory donuts!

This week:
Crouching Bunny, Hidden Dragon
Tonight at midnight, the year of the metal rabbit begins!
The reign of the tiger is almost over (not a moment too soon, we say), and the rabbit is set to take its place on the zodiac. When the clock strikes 12... well, uh, we're not totally sure how this thing works, to tell you the truth... Does the rabbit eat the tiger? Does the tiger become the rabbit? Does the rabbit army depose the tiger in a rabbit coup backed by widespread bunny dissatisfaction with the tiger's autocratic rule? Or is there just a smoooooth transition, with lots of fireworks and dancing and general celebration?
We don't know! But tonight we will find out. We will arrive in Chinatown shortly before midnight, where we will be joining the crowds (we, uh, assume there will be crowds?) at the midnight temple ceremony. Get in touch with your rabbit selves. All hail the bunny!
Oh, and before that, we'll be doing some bike riding and stuff. That's important too.
The ride is a medium distance (25-ish miles), and may have a hill in it. Nothing crazy, though. If the celebration is the kind of thing where people want to hang around, they can hang around, but unless it's the kind of thing where everybody wants to hang around, the ride will eventually be heading back to the donut shop.
Talk, talk, talk...

The promised land of syntheses...
