The Passage of a Few People Through a Rather Brief Moment in Time #99 - Transmission Impossible

05.25.11

One or more persons during a certain period drop their usual motives for movement and action, their relations, their work and leisure activities, and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the encounters they find there.

It's a bike ride.

Started by user nathansnider and user theroyalacademy.

It meets every Wednesday at 8:30pm at California Donuts #21.
We ride at 9pm.
We'll endeavor to return before the last red line trains (around midnight).
See how we move.

On the second year of this bike ride, you might expect:
- more inconvenient passageways
- more full moon picnics
- perhaps more "cover" versions of other people's rides, performed with amateurish enthusiasm
- certainly more amateurish enthusiasm
- disorientation
- reorientation
- pool halls
- bowling alleys
- dance parties
- karaoke
- imaginary histories
- scavenging for fun and sustenance
- more geocaching
- more oblique strategies
- more Oulipian constraints
- traffic median tea parties

Furthermore:
- A medium pace (maybe not for beginners; certainly not a hustle)
- We're not in a rush; we don't need to run every light.
- Many miles this week; one big hill.
- Victory donuts!

This week:

Transmission Impossible

The radio, it is speaking to us. And listening to that disembodied voice, we may feel just slightly disembodied ourselves, vaguely aware that we are members of an audience that is sharing an experience everywhere simultaneously. It evokes a sense of placelessness borne of its very omnipresence. The radio, we might say, is not "here." The radio is pure _now_.

But of course, the radio is not completely placeless, nor is it rooted so firmly in the moment. There are physical anchors that tie everything in place and limitations that rein it all in: microphones, antennas and receivers; wattages, impedances and lines of sight. And each moment takes place within a longer timeline, with debts to the past and responsibilities to the future: regulations, traditions, revenues...

And perhaps this all sounds glaringly obvious when one comes right out and says it (so obvious, in fact, that one must wonder whether this whole pretense of placeless now-ness is just a bunch of rhetorical hokum). But then perhaps one turns on the radio and is carried away, and things become a great deal less obvious indeed. Perhaps?

In any case, this week, we will be visiting several sites of historical radio interest: pirate and commercial, superpowered and micropowered, secular and religious, foreign and domestic.

And we're going over the hill this week too, which is appropriate, considering that the mileage is also pushing 40 (Get it? Get it? Oh, we're _hilarious_), but there is a red line bailout point for the nervous or time-constrained. Really, though: hills; distance; be ready.

*********SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT!*********
You may have noticed that we are about to break out of the double digits. Yes indeed, next week is our 100th ride, and to celebrate, we will be riding 100 miles! To ensure that everyone who wants to join us will have a reasonable chance to do so, we are having a special weekend Passage ride (Saturday instead of Wednesday). We will be starting sometime in late morning (think 10am-ish) and riding until we are done (think 10pm-ish, plus or minus any unforseen time distortions). We will have rendezvous and bailout points for those who only want to do part of the ride, though the aforementioned time distortions may make it difficult to predict exactly when we'll reach them. Again: we are NOT riding on Wednesday, the first day of June; we are instead riding on SATURDAY, the FOURTH day of June. You may plan accordingly.
*******END SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT*******
