This will be the first Friday, Nov 21st, that the Redline will be running until 3AM. So everyone from Valley can ride this ride and get home without having to cross Cahuenga Pass.
From what i hear, we will be stopping at a location where beverages can be procured across the street from a 24 hour Taco stand. This may change but should satisfy everyone's needs, wants and wildest desires.
Wouldn't it be cool if some of the Sins n Sprockets organizers/ came out for this ride? I think that would be cool. This will hopefully be the start of a recurring ride!
i always appreciated how supportive and positive brad always was about the SINS and SPROCKETS ride, so i am hoping to at least stop by and hang out (if not do the ride). I am guessing dan and louis will most likely make it?
Hey Chuck-0, I may have to miss Brads maiden voyage ride. Bruce Campbell will be at the Nuart in person for the opening of his new movie 'My name is Bruce'. But brad has at everyturn shown his support to SnS and this is sooooo duly noted.
I've arranged with the general store at the start point to sell beer to ridazz. they have a non profit status so he'll try to get tecate or something similar and have it on a probably $2 "donation" per beer. I told him to get no more than 2 cases. This may be the start point for future "ride with no name" rides so if you're gonna drink beer, try to buy one from him at the start.
a posting over there----> is encouraging ridazz to bring any canned food or anything to donate to the midnight mission. If you want to but can't make it to the mission before the ride, I'll collect it all at the start and deliver it to the mission the next day.
@barley, do we bring the canned food to the start of the ride, or are you suggesting we drop it off on the way to the ride? either way is fine, i'm just clarifying.
you can drop off food or used clothing at the mission before the ride. if there is no one there, you will be able to drop it off in front and it will be put to good use, one way or another.
you can bring it to the start and i'll bring all the stuff the next day or take it directly there . i'd think some homeless would steal the food and (eddie's probably right for once) sell it if it's just left on their door step.
Philepe's?! If you're gonna be at 3rd and Traction I would recomend Frying Fish sushi in the Japanese Village Plaza. Cheap, good and it's on a conveyor belt. $3 large Asahis also.
i totally forgot i got concert tics for tonight, i cant make it to sushi, and the subsequent ride... Medeski, Martin and Wood is not a concert to be missed.
Mostly flat, few stops, mellow ride and (so far as I saw) drama free.
That was just about perfect for my wife's first ride with this group (and pretty much the fist time she has done any riding at all in the last 10 years or so).
Sorry I missed out on this ride. I was stuck in China Town with a shit load of holes in my tubes from rolling through thorn laced dirt. The bike gods were not on my side. I'll be at the next one fersur!
.....Thanks to everyone who came out. My aim is & was to keep the feel of Sins and Sprockets on the ride and for future 3rd Friday Rides With No Name. Gerard, Andrew, Louis, Al, Lance and Stevo were xtremely awesome helping out.
I thought only 50 or so would show up.....I made 150 spoke cards and only have about 10 left. Not bad for my first posted ride....I'll bring them to C.R.A.N.K. mob for anyone who didn't get one.
Anyhow, I'm gonna keep the ride as a 2 stop 17-20 mile jaunt througout the city.
Any thoughts on the starting point outside the General Store?
Excellent ride, Brad! You have really picked up where S&S left off. I liked the start point - convenient, and it makes me remember the old days at Al's Bar and the late seventies loft scene (I'm dating myself here, I know).
The only change I would suggest is to make the stops just a little shorter and give a little more warning on departures (but that's what I always say).
ONE THINGS FOR SURE, WITH BARLEYE'S RIDE, WE NEVER HAVE TO FEEL POLICED IN TO 'FOLLOWING' THE LEADER.
SOME RIDAZZ GO TO FAR.
SOME RIDAZZ DONT GO FAR ENOUGH.
SOME RIDAZZ DONT GO AT ALL.
AND
SOME RIDAZZ GO ALL THE WAY....
....OF THERE WAY TO SET UP A NICE RIDE, I HAVE TO AGREE WITH MR. ROLLERS, A 15 MINUTE WARNING, FOLLOWED BY A 5 MINUTE WARNING, SHOULD BE INCORPORATED IN TO ALL FUTURE RIDES.
GIVE IT UP TO BARLEYE, GOOD JOB, AND ATTITUDE, I NEVER HEARD OR SAW HIM 'HOLLER' AT ANYTIME TO ANOTHER RIDA ABOUT 'SLOWING DOWN'.
The ride to which no words can be assigned, whose intentions lay shrouded in idle mist; a pillar of noncrete onto which no presumptions may be cast; a fortress of ambiguity that fears not scorn nor compliment.
I dont know about you guys but the best part of the ride for me was invading USC and crashing their concert. We should have stayed there a bit longer....
Just scouted next months ride with no name. The route looks totally fun. the hard part is trying not to duplicate the same streets from other rides....which I think will be successful for most of it.
Long Beach Ridda, if you liked rollin through USC you should come to the Mosey, every Wednesday night. We often roll through USC. In fact, that portion of The Ride With No Name was led by a Mosey veteran.
The "CHILL CHINATOWN MOSEY" is every Wednesday at 10pm ride out from Cesar Chavez and Spring Street outside the Smokehouse (I recommend the sampler platter) restaurant.
I drove the route last night....good streets....not a lot of potholes, mostly right turns....don't forget to buy a candy bar, gum, or a beer from Bloom's at the start point. I've been keeping in touch with "Q" there and he's stoked about us starting up there.
The old schoolers will remember Al's Bar being at the start point up till 2001....
Here's an article about Al's Bar from the L.A. Times
Damn I can't believe it's been 7 years already since Al's Bar closed. I miss that place. Great choice on the starting location. And there's a bathroom inside for the ladddeeezzz.
Hey barleye is the ride going to be simular to the last one in lenth and hillnes. went to the last one and i wished i would of brought my girlfriend cause it ended up being a perfect starter ride. her first one was the midevil ride and that one killed her.
Oh yeah, thanks Brad for putting this ride on. Wish we were able to roll with you guys the whole route, but we stopped to help a rida out. The route I did roll with you guys was awesome!
The ride will pick up peeps once it gets warmer. If you need some help with next months ride, post up.
brad.
feel bad that i can't seem to make it out to this ride. really want to make it out and if my mother inlaw wasn't in town visiting i would be there for sure. have a good one
i'm gonna be out in the area after work (round 5:30-6) if anybody wants to meet up for some Flying/Frying Fish (good cheap sushi) or Wielands for pre-ride libations.
There was a really cool section of town we never been through, (at least I haven't), it was before going through Staples. It had some awesome views of downtown that I've never seen. I'll have to go back some time.
Nice to see a big turnout. I would have liked to seen the ride being longer. In the 20 mile range, but that's just nit picking.
good ride, although a little on the short side, but whatever.
i hope daniel found his way back to dave and crespins after i took him to fletcher.
on the way to second street when we were a block or two from the start, daniel gets stopped by some black women leaving a club with their boyfriends and his latin accent was driving them wild and he got one of their numbers. then they started talking about the biggie movie and they wanted to ride our bikes but we had to leave. i think he wanted an american to sex, so look out.
I had a great time..Thanks to Louis for assisting with the route....
The reason for the 16 mile ride back to Traction was this:
2 months ago around 150 showed up (warm weather)
last month around 45, only 15 completed it (weather dipped into the 40's).
January's usually the coldest month so I wanted it to be a 1 stop ride and not too long so we didn' t have to hang around in parking lots in cold weather....It turned out to be pretty warm and a huge turnout...I wanted to make it longer as we were leaving the first stop.....Louis said to keep it as is since people have route slips and that next month would be longer.
Next month, Louis is helping with the route again so it should be longer and good.....
Brad and Louis and everyone that helped... shiet rocked!! Route was awesome!! I'm glad you put this ride together. A lot of us hated to see S&S go but the no name ride definitely fills in the gap really well. Great route... so many good people came out to the ride too!
IMHO the 2006-2007 transition was one of the best periods of rides... and the vibe of last nights ride reminded of those good times. From the people on the rides and the route itself.... this is what MR is all about... the reason I got hooked into all of this craziness in the first place...
Dude... props to CoeCoeB, Marino, and others getting down at Ralphs!
Kogi bbq will be at 1st and Alameda before the ride.
Bloom's General Stroe is vacating their spot March 1st (Start point). They're gonna be selling Tecate's on ice before the ride inside. They've been way cool with me and stoked for it starting there since the first Ride in December....so as always, please leave no trace.
Thanks for putting an awesome ride together Brad. Great route, great group of peeps and great to see some of the S&S folks out too.
I really liked that we didn't scramble like roaches at the site of cop car. Which rolled up to us in the parking lot. Shows that there's somewhat a more responsible group of people around. Or something like that. Anyways, props for not getting all wimpy.
brad,
good ride! we had to bail a little early since one of our guys needed to catch the train. it was great to be out. 1st ride i have done in awhile. i know the effort it takes to put on a ride so a big thanks again.
So here's the deal for the March Ride With No Name....
The route's set and it's really good. This is a collaboration with Mr. Rollers and we're gonna be riding by old punk rock clubs and hangouts from around 1977-1982 or so....We'll stop at a few for a few moments and some we'll just ride by or point to where the building used to be....Some have been demolished, 1 was set on fire, 1 is about 100 feet from O-20 (you probably didn't know that)...
Old punk rock playlist. Give me a couple of bands from the era so I get an idea. I'm not well versed in the punk stuff. Joy Division considered early punk?
Just received the booklet (each rider gets one) Mr. Rollers designed for the ride this Friday. It's really great....music will be primarily Punk bands from L.A. pre 1982.
We ask that you stay behind the music. It's a chill paced ride. If you don't know the route, please don't ride ahead of the pack.
Barleye, will probably have to miss this one. Lame, i know. It sounds like a good one this month and the booklet/cd/spoke card you got working sounds cool.
Walking down the street and I'm looking for some
I see some broad walking and I wanna cum
I got a big one and gotta need a release
I started grabbing her but she slapped me
Come with me, and fuck me, I want to cum
Don't tell me you bleed, it's not going to stop me, it's just a bluff
Drank a couple beers and smoked some buds
My cock started rising and I wanted some fun
So lift up your dress and I'll lick your mess
Don't be shy and I'll eat your pie
Come with me, and fuck me, I want to cum
Don't be a tease, drop your jeans, it won't hurt
Come with me, and fuck me, I want to cum
I need a release, I need to fuck, but I'm not in love
Can't get a gig till ya scared some muff
I can't ever seem to get enough
I haven't got laid in a hour or so
Hey you, how bout a blow
Come with me, fuck me, I want to cum
I need a release, I need to fuck, but I'm not in love
So I assume the music will include all the bands featured in "The Decline of Western Civilization." Germs, Fear, Black Flag, X, Circle Jerks and Alice Bag Band.
i have a gg allin belt buckle. i know everything there is to know about him for the most part.
they wont let you play your ipod, so i wouldnt bother bringing it. barleye is very deadset on what music gets played on his rides. believe me, ive tried.
About this ride: We will be riding past many old punk rock landmarks around Los Angeles and briefly stopping at a few. These are places we've ridden by many times without being aware of the history that dwells right under our noses. The booklet each rider will receive contains the addresses of these locations and several others in the vicinity, as well as some information about each. Check out the booklet before or after the ride. If your interest is aroused, further research and exploration awaits you.
Hopefully in the future, you can say to another rider, "Hey, that's where The Masque used to be."
For maximum enjoyment, Please do not ride ahead of the pack! The music is a vital element of this ride.
Morrison Hotel (1246 Hope Street): Morrison Hotel is in downtown L.A., a dirty and dangerous area. Today the large multistorey building is a hotel again. Ray Manzarek accidentally "discovered" the Morrison Hotel at the end of 1969. The next day The Doors went there, together with photographer Henry Diltz, where he shot a series of photos. The famous window used to be on the left hand side directly adjacent to the entrance, where photos printed in "The Illustrated History" were also shot. The entrance decorated with mosaic ornaments still exists. On the outer wall one can also still recognise the non-functioning neon sign of the hotel. See many great photos of The Doors inside and outside the hotel on Henry Diltz's CD-ROM "Under The Covers".
the doors are arguably the first punk rock band in LA. jim morrison's theatrical stage presence definitely influenced a generation of performers. looking at the germs, gun club, and iggy pop etc. you can definitely see a desire to be jim morrison.
read "we got the neutron bomb." it's a series of interviews with the founders of the la punk scene. i believe the title of the first chapter was "they all looked up to Jim."
and then of course, there's the X- Manzarek connection: ray manzarek produced the first 4 x albums, and their first album includes an amazing version of soul kitchen played 3x faster
and i'd have to disagree with your assessment of Iggy being influenced by the doors much, if at all, he was doing his own thing independent of the Doors in the late 60s, too.
and i saw Robby Krieger play with the Muffs, but the ride is about LA punk from '77 to '82, not LA punk's influences.
I saw 1 metal show at dancing waters around 1989 or so. ...it was HARDLY DANGEROUS, now known as james brown's ex wife's band. it was an all girl metal band.
Oh silly me! I forgot this was a punk rock theme. Fuck it, I'm rolling by there tomorrow night, on my way to this ride. It's a dangerous part of town, wish me luck!
Here's the screamers stuff i have. some is really crappy quality.
If I cant Have
The Scream
It's a Violent World
Vertigo
The Beat Goes On
Punish Or Be Damned
Government Love Affair
Magazine Love
Go Guy
Sex Boy
Peer Pressure
LA Punk
She's The Girl
dig. i'm iain. you know me. i dont know if those are the same recordings i'm thinking of. i have the two cd set of live recordings. there are also two sets of studio recordings, but the rights got all tied up. we'll have to set up a trade.
ive got no use for drugs
i never get high
i want to shoot a cop
i want to see him die
rollin through the sixties
were a whole lot of fun
where a lot of these pigs
forgot how to run
i dug out my old punk rock jacket but it was even more ripped up than i remember (ripped up by nazi skins at a show, tru story) so even w/ safety pins it aint wearable

Recent collaboration with Shepard Fairey
The collaboration I did at the end of last year with Shepard was done with four separate Bad Brains photos of mine we composed into one piece. All agree this one came out great.
It will officially be released on the Obey Giant and Bad Brains websites simultaneously March 26th (possibly a bit earlier for the hard core fans of the Bad Brains on their site) . The print was made as a limited edition of approximately 400 hand numbered copies, all are signed by Shepard, myself and all of the original Bad Brains!!! If you want one you better keep your eyes on those sites for the moment it's released because they are sure to sell out within a few hours.
yeah you can for sure ride back with us. we will probably not be going through the park though.
http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/for-mike-kim
the end point is semi relative. you will see plenty of people on bikes and blinky lights and whatever else to let you know that you are there. or if you get lazy you can ride the train with liz and i. i think we are getting on at universal around 8:30.
Bloom's General Store at the start of the ride closed for good 2/28/09. They were kind enough to sell beer to us before the ride. If you drink at the start point, PLEASE make sure you don't leave bottles or cans around the area. I'll bring a large trash bag and leave it for someone to recycle.
And once again, sorry to sound like a broken record, but please do not ride in front of the pack. The music will begin at the start of the ride.
maybe liz will be ok with riding through the park with a big group of people. we took san fernando the entire way back from stephs party a few weeks ago and i was scared to death of being hit by a speeding mercedes.
That was just one awesome group of people tonight!!! Me and tallcans were talking about how there was just a shitload of all the regular ridazz out tonight. Would have been the perfect ride if BBD hadn't totaled his bike.
Hope you're feeling ok in the morning Dan!!!
Thanks barleye and rollers, great job on the book, the route, and the playlist!!! Thanks Harry for towing the trailer and thanks iain for corking that one prick while we were heading back east.
And thanks to danya, matt, KiMS1, and rbi for towing this old fuck through the park once again. And, shit, I met more people tonight than I have in ages.
And one last thing, after all that hippie love shit:
youth gone mad! thats who it fucken was. i remember trying 2 find that when i was doing the playlist 4 the hollywood sleaze ride a couple years back but i couldnt find that shit nowhere
What a great time I had. You are all so f@#%!N awesome.
It was so great to be out with everybody again.
Seeing the whole Valley crew together. Great talking with Danya about the future of the SFV. Loved how some smelly guy pointed out that a few of us all hung out the same club 20+ years ago and it took bicycles to bring us together and know each others names and become friends. Talking with FUzz and having him bring up some of my in the "closet collecting dust" political passions. Meeting some new face to place with old thread names with. Alfredo and Larry you are both awesome. Hanging out with everybody at Arbys after BBD fought it out with the pavement. Yeah he got a couple of shiners but you should see what he did to that asphalt. Nobody noticed what Dan did to the ground because they where too concerned with Dan and amazed with the Culture Jamming taking place on the Arbys sign. Officer Hwang harassing us and abusing his authority with RB (although RB claimed he was doing his job). Having people light fireworks off in front of RBI (life is funny that way). All the girls being so pretty. And just riding. It's been too long. Brad I have something to tell you before you go camping. Much more to mention, but the music is playing. Thank you for the night everyone.
hmm knowing there was a group of Valley riders making the trek down for this last ride would have definitely make me want to come. I'll keep an eye out next month
which first hill? the climb up western to los feliz? no, there are other ways to get up there. i suggested taking sunset or hollywood all the way to hillhurst and then taking hillhurst to los feliz, but no one wanted to do that.
"Officer Hwang harassing us and abusing his authority with RB (although RB claimed he was doing his job)."
Was Hwang his actual name? I didnt see his badge.
Here's the thing that goes over people's heads all the time when talking about what is and what isn't "police harassment." In cases like this where we actually were breaking some laws, there is a trade off that allows a cop to negotiate using small time harassment like methods such as the ones employed by this particular cop to get what results they could not otherwise get had we been legally biding our time....
were we loitering on private property - yes
were we drinking in public - yes
were we vandalizing the business - yes
based on all those yeses the cop could easily have wrote us petty tickets and so forth.... sure, we could stand up for our rights and fight the tickets and win because it's hard to prove any of us INDIVIDUALLY were doing any of these things (save for loitering on private property) we probably would have gotten off. but that is a LOSING proposition none the less! I simply dont have the time or energy to go to court to fight these things. its not worth spending my value-able time to "stand up for my right to loiter and drink at an Arbys"
on the other hand, when the cop asked me to delete the photos I took of the vandalism he was bordering on my rights as a photographer and an artist and at that point I was willing to put up resistance to it because in that sense I hadn't broken any laws and to me it was worth fighting for the timeless memorable photographs I had taken. He recognized that his request was not legally binding and he probably indeed knew that he was bordering on real harrassment and all he could do at that point was to threaten me with letter of the law scrutiny as I rode away. I chose instead to walk my bike away.
today, thanks to my capitulation I am able to ride on without having a future court date to think about and waste my value-able time defending against a loitering on private property charge.
I've actually met this cop once before. He pulled over a bunch of wolfpack riders who blew through a light. he didnt write them a ticket. that's a fair trade for not giving this cop too much of a hard time this time around. we will inevit-ably see each other again. I hope he gives me a break next time too.
in my mind the trade off was perfectly fine.... IF I had not been doing any of the wrongs and IF no one I was with had been doing any of the wrongs.... THEN maybe putting up a fight would be worth it.... but given the facts on the ground we basically got a good old talking to, and the cop was being pretty much cool about it. it could have been worse.... I'm comfortable with that.
No doubt we got away from that clean. And you handled that situation w/ the photos really well... The sergeant really got pissed when you asserted your rights on the pic and then he started looking for the bicycle license (which you had) and then... after we started walking away he tells a cruiser that pulled up to keep an eye on you and basically try to write you up on anything they could.
Man..
yes yes yes! that ride WAS AWESOME!! thanks for the ride arc style education on punk rock venues in LA. what a fucking great idea and great work on the Zine Rollers!
is this when the cop was telling people to get off the road after BBD biffed it?
btw,
i don't mean to talk shit but when them kids were taggin the street sign a block up from where BBD fell, i was the only one giving them shit and no one backed me up on that. actually, everyone looked at me like i was fucking insane.
it was quite a while after bbd fell.... we were all horsing around on the tables outside arby's and basically loitering and fucking with the sign like bored teenagers. hahah. it was great for a laugh but then the popo rolled up. sure, the cop was being condescending to us, but we deserved it for horsing around on someone else's property.... no big whoop.
as for the kids tagging and no one backing you up... I'm going to guess that it depends on how you approached them... was it more of a "you dumb motherfuckers" or was it more of a "hey guys, that isnt cool you are burning the spot for all of us"
I think Roadblock has it right about voicing our annoyance at the tagging without escalating the whole thing... I and a few others around the corner were yelling at that kid too, and one of his friends got a little chest puffy with us. I'm not really jazzed about a disagreement turning into a fistfight, so I'll try to keep my hot head in check. Thanks for putting things in perspective, Roadblock.
Thank you to everyone that did the Beyond and Back ride with us. I've had at least 20 people either email me or tell me in person Thanking me for a great ride or saying they heard it was a really great ride and they were sorry they missed it.
First off, this ride was easily 80% / 20%...maybe even 90% / 10% in Mr. Rollers' favor as far as contribution, accuracy, and flow. He designed the booklet with around 24 hours of time put into it. He'd been to most of the clubs, knew the locations, had books and knew of websites for research, and put 150% of effort into this ride. I supplied him a list of 1300 punk songs and he whitteled it down to L.A. Bands from 1977-1982...even went as far as digitizing a bunch of his old vinyl for the playlist.
Quoting Mr. Rollers: "It's very hard to have any objective sense of the strengths & weaknesses of a ride when you're involved in putting it on." Absolutely true! We just hear what people tell us and It’s motivation for me to up the ante and keep the routes fresh and hope everyone has a good time.
Thanks Mr. Rollers for the time and efforts you put into this ride. It couldn’t have went down without you….
Check this out..….The photographer of the stage dive photo on the spoke card from around 1981 or 1982 is Edward Colver and he just happened to be at the start of the ride visiting a friend in the area. He signed my spoke cards and posed for a photo with me.. Yesssss!
Ed published a table top book of his work. Http://www.edwardcolver.com
Thanks to you, Brad. You're being very modest about your responsibilities and contributions to this ride. Yes, I've had the concept for this ride bubbling in my mind for a long time, but it took you and RWNN to make it happen. It was a pleasure working with you.
I'll also second the thanks to Harry for bringing out the trailer and pulling that beast - it really gave the ride the atmosphere it needed. I'm sorry you all couldn't hear every note of the playlist that Barleye put together.
The truth is that most people that attend these types of rides have very little conception of the amount of planning and effort that goes into them, but it gets done because it's a labor of love.
I tend to be an idealist when I plan something, so the reality is often a let-down that falls short of my expectations. In light of that, it's gratifying to know that people enjoyed this ride and got something out of it.
I haven't really seen anyone post up on BBD condition, so I'll do it. I talked to him today and he said the worst is his wrist. He said he can move it, it seems like a sprang wrist. Putting ice on the affected areas of him after going down, the shoulder and his wrist really helped. He's just sore now.
He said he hit his head on the road, and if he didn't have his helmet on, he would have had some head injury. I hope you guys are seeing the light, yeah?
His bike is fucked up but he's been working on another, so he'll be back soon. He almost made it to the Crank Mob ride is what he told me. So considering how hard he went down, looks like it could have been worst.
I hear this is a good chill ride and every one is cool but i had 2 co workers go (Girls) who said peeps where beeing rude and in there own groups and ingorant. is this true is this like a crank mob ride?
the february ride had a few bad apples. they usually keep to themselves, but one almost hit me going fast on a downhill. i yelled at him and he made some macho comment. whatever, this is one of the chillest and funnest rides. if this is going to be an expansive and inclusive rides, we're going to ride with people we don't necessarily like. we can just be the better example. kids will be kids, always.
This ride was really good. Excellent route, good pace, themed, super chill atmosphere, and on top of everything I really didn't notice anybody that was hammered out of their mind or causing problems. This was probably due to the lack of liquor stops, only one at the very end.
Besides Big Bike Dan crashing I would say it was very much ideal as far as rides go.
this is coming from the valley hermit that never comes on the bigger rides.
the reasons why i think its an awesome ride
1. the age. most of the riders are in between the age of 23 to 48. something like that. not too many younger kids going around acting like hooligans. and teh youngers ones that do come out are respectful.
2. lack of liquor stops. im a huge fan of liquor stops but im starting to realize that rides are a lot more fun when it revolves around riding instead of getting sloshed.
3. the older riders keeping the younger ones in check. some kid fucks off, someones gonna yell at you.
4. the crowd. most of the people on this ride are true angelenos. we've been raised here. not too many transplants. i think we appreciate our city more. what was really cool about this last ride was that it was like a history lesson about my home town. thanks again barleye and mr rollers and to everyone else that helped.
the liquor stop was the 7-11 at the 14 mile mark of the 25 mile route.....just after the starwood. hardly at the "very end" of the ride.
there wasn't supposed to be a liquor stop. since we were intending on stopping at a few other spots but traffic was chaotic in hollywood so we didn't have anyone speak at "the masque". it was mostly for the girls to use the restroom either at 7-11 or the mexican joint next door but they were dicks and didn't let anyone in. I sent a few over to French Market across the street and they had no problems using the b-rooms there.
This was the 5th Ride with no name and each has had 2 liquor stops. last month was on whittier and indiana, then a 7-11.
next month will be a ride to the southern portions of east l.a. and into vernon. it's a great route with 100% flat ground. 1 stop at a huge convenience store in an industrial part of town that happens to sell liquor. not sure of the second stop yet. gonna do the route with louis and figure it out this week.
I AM COMING TO THIS RIDE! COME HELL OR HIGH WATER I WILL BE THERE! For some reason, the 3rd Friday tends to bestow misfortune upon me...Well I'm not putting up with it anymore!
kims - I was using a 50mm 1.4G Nikkor with my D90. Speakin of which I need to untrade Mikey with his 30mm Sigma lens because I miss my 50mm. That lens is sharp as hell!
Thanks for the compliment though! Definitely a few of my all time favorite shots :)
your 50mm 1.4 is AF-S? can shoot on the d40? Very sweet lens... and very sweet lens.. i got the 30mm and yes.. it's kinda soft. Would love to use the 50mm.
lol. that means i'll be riding the toilet all night tonight. at home. unless i figure out a way to prop it up on my bike and be able to maintain my balance. any suggs?
nvm scratch that. if you have food poisoning u need to take an anti-biotic and poop all ya want! it's getting the bad bacteria out. and drink a lot of water so u don't get dehydrated. and also drink poweraid (not gateraid) for electrolytes imbalance.
lol. that means i'll be riding the toilet all night tonight. at home. unless i figure out a way to prop it up on my bike and be able to maintain my balance. any suggs?
July. I feel you.
But the way you said it. haha
Chynna would be proud
Hey Barleye that route was really sweet. Was great riding on some new streets and meeting some new people. we need a ride to go through the south side more often.
Hope both parties are ok after that bike crash in Vernon.
hey guys... i was one of the ridazz that went down. it was me and this guy, Geo. both of us were sent to County hospital. I'm doing okay. luckily, no broken bones or concussion....just a really swollen face and bruised lip. my right eye is swollen shut. (i feel like i got chris brown'ed or su'in...lol)
geo, on the other hand, is in worse condition than i. he had just recovered from a previous injury...and now (from what i heard thru a mutual friend) has a broken shoulder, broken ribs, sprained ankle and his bike is totalled. i feel really bad for him cuz that's his main form of transportation. =(
i really do feel bad...and i want to do something to help him out. anyone know where/how i can help him out with at least getting a new bike? i don't know what he had, other than he was riding a fixie.
thoughts?
btw, thanks to everyone for all the well-wishes via text messages, calls, FB & Twitter. and of course, thanks to everyone who was there to help us out too!!! totally <3 the MR community! you guys rock! <>
OMG AL!!! I couldn't stop thinking about that last night too! (dayam motownphilly! lolz)
thanks for the love... i'll send the love onto Geo as well. (he's in good spirits...just bummed that he's gonna be out of commission for 3 weeks to heal.)
Brad.. Louis... Harry.. and others that helped... great freaking ride!!
On that last leg heading into downtown.. I was in the middle and trying to catch up to Harry to enjoy the sounds (cause my battery died)... but hell... you got legs of steel hauling the trailer... big ups Harry!!
Damn Kat, hope you're feeling better. I don't know Geo, but I feel for you and hope you are better too. I didn't have any idea how serious the accident was when it happened. I was under the impression it was a scrap and bruise type of accident.
Good ride Barley, and a nice route. Wish we could have finished the route, but had a train to catch back to LB.
Thanks for your well-wishes and concern. I'm doing okay...the swelling has been slowly going down and I'm FINALLY able to open my eye without using too much effort. (It's been swollen shut since the accident on Friday night.) And yeah, when it happened, I thought I'd be able to get back on my bike and keep riding. But after I tried to get up, I knew that my night was done. =( I got my bike back today from Danny Zuko and it's okay....just need to get the front wheel fixed.
Geo lives pretty close to me...in north LBC. I told him that I'll plan on visiting him soon. If anyone is interested in going with me sometime this week, please let me know.
Thanks so much for the ride last night. Whoa--I'm still beat! I had an awesome time--music was great. Thanks to Louis for helping out, as always..and F'in Harry for bringing us great music! Guys, you rock!!!
great ride! Cool meeting you brad. I was the guy with the dogtown shirt on. funny thing every time i were that shirt i end up at the dogtown projects scared that im going to get shot.
I just wanted to give a big THANKS to the people that stayed and helped me out when my chain fell off (that's really scary on a fixed gear... luckily when my back wheel jammed, I just skidded to a stop, and nobody hit me from behind.)
JB, Revolutionary, Kuby and somebody who's name I don't know... you guys are the best! Thank you!
what I dont find funny are the people that ride fixed no brake and use their shoes to low them down. not only is that stupid and dangerous to the riders around them, it fucking smells!
yeah i agree with you on that one funanu. i saw more kids WITH brakes using their shoes on the back wheel to slow themselves going down those hills than using their actual brake levers. darwinism, trends, etc.
We scouted the ride in a car and didn't notice the "inclines" would be tagged as "hills". We agreed that they wouldn't be a problem and to go with the route as planned.....We're always trying to keep the routes fresh with different spots to stop at that aren't used on EVERY OTHER RIDE....with that said, we had to from one area to another that unfortunately had some small "hills" but the upside is that they were the smallest of the hills east and west of the route.
The block party detour was unexpected and that took us off the route and up a few hills on I think soto that weren't planned. the route at the point was flat. we had to improvise.
Thanks to everyone that came out.
Note to the kids that keep riding ahead....Please just ride behind the music.
Oh, yeah, forgot to mention... there were more train track encounters in this one night than I've ever encountered on all the rides put together (on my ride down to the ride I encountered a few as well) and almost fell on more than one occassion. Other than that... no complaints here.
I love the new grounds we've been covering thanks to this ride.
1. Great route! Enjoyed the new streets and areas.
2. Stay behind the music, please! The guy who pulls the trailer works hard enough as it is, give him some respect. Show up Monday night to WP if you'd like to prove you're fast.
3. Hills and tracks are inevitable - learn to ride up hills, learn to ride down hills safely and under control. Learn to negotiate train tracks (you'll be seeing more & more of them around town). Hint: slow down and give yourself plenty of room to change your angle of attack.
Great ride Friday! Loved the route and areas we rolled to. Always liked going East, Lincoln Heights and in Vernon. Too bad I had to cut off my riding to catch a train, would have loved to finish the ride.
This ride had the biggest turnout by far this last Friday. I think even bigger than any S&S ride. But by the time I cut out, which was at the second stop, seemed like we lost ALOT of the ridazz. Just wondering if there was any accidents or any people dropped or anything like that?
If anyone happens to be a slower rida, they need to get at the front of the pack when it starts. This way they don't string out the ride. Saw alot of riders just lagging at the back not really trying to get with the pack. This puts people at risk. The people that are corking are being pressured to get off the fuckin road cause of you guys! Hardly anyone realizes this.
BARLEYE! amazing ride, man. I have to say that was the most pleasing route I've been on in a while. Thanks again.. and the last stop was an amazing surprise! I never knew that spot was possible. i was contemplating the quality of rides last night, and just cant be happier that we live in the most fun city in the world. Thanks again.
I thought this kid reminded me of a cross between the fresh prince of bel air and woody allen...i had to record the freestyle sesssion...and hes actually not that bad
NOTE: The ride will be starting at 9pm this Friday and going forward to accommodate people taking the last train home....they can ride a bit more then cut out if need be.

support the local businesses.....At the start point of the ride are AY CARAMBA (mexican food) and Wertshigkeiahgifaidealeia (sausages). Both are really good.
HAD a fucking blast time on this no name ride!!!
it was my first no name too!
plus thanks to the guy who was giving out the spoke cards! appreciate it!
sad to see that one guy eat shit tho.. :(
Twas a kickass time, nice route, great seeing so many people who thought I came back from the dead or something.
I made a separate split from South Park at the end to go retrieve an incapacitated field agent on the other side of the 110.
Aside from that, the night went off without many serious problems.
Damn yeah we need info on this assault. Hard to believe this happens with all the ridazz around.
Otherwise, great ride again Brad. We had a minor mishap with some drunken rida crashing, but that's all the miscues I saw. Great route, awesome turnout, and very good job planning it. The spoke card is definitely a keeper. Really nice job on putting that together too.
Thanks again for keeping the ball rolling after S&S gave up the slot. That's turned out to be a really move for all.

hey guys, it feels nice to be mentioned here. Yes I'm the guy that crashed. Got six stitches and fractured my nose into three sections. but all seems to be ok.
Yeah, your face was bleeding pretty good there for a minute.
I am happy that your brain is still OK after the hit you took to your head.
Did you land on your face or something? I heard you hit the back of the parked car and went flying over your handlebars, doing a full flip before hitting the ground.

Thanks again for coming out....The hand signals worked well for turns...i looked back a lot and people were passing them on to the rest.....I have about 10 spoke cards left that i'll bring with tonight to the soulsticylce in case someone didn't get one. Sorry to hear about the bat and nose incidents....we didn't get word of the bat beat down until the 2nd stop. People cleaned up after themselves....i had a good time...thanks again.

Barleye!
I got the spoke card with the "photo finish", if you still have a "gas mask" version, I'd like one for the spoke card archive.
I'll look for you tonight at Soulsticycle.
Great ride last night, I got to catch-up with a lot of friends I hadn't seen for a while.
The baseball bats incident is very desturbing. Maybe we should form a "lost patrol" of 12 or so ridas to stop with any flats so we don't leave just 2 or 3 to deal on their own. Especially when we roll through sketchey areas, which covers most places we ride in!
I landed on my forehead first then my nose did the rest of the job.... At least my teeth survived, I don't remember exactly how I crashed but I didn't feel any pain until last night after I got home from General Hospital.
The only thing that hurts more than my nose is having lost my first spoke card!....
Hey no way joe I'm glad that you are OK. I thought you broke your nose. I was one of the people who went across the street with you and were telling you to sit down.Take it easy it sounds like you got a concussion, too. What did they do for you at General?
I haven't seen many bad crashes, but in the year that I've been riding, yours has been the worse. I saw the entire thing happen, it was really scary. I felt bad, good to know you're doing okay. Lots of people ate it that night.

Im one of the guys that got there bike stolen. It was two hispanic guys that came up to us with bats and took our bikes. We called the cops after and luckily were able to get my friends bike back but the guy that stole mine got away.
There was alot of bad riding that night. I can't remember how many times I was buzzed by a ridazz. I finally lost it once after getting buzzed about five times. Told this fucker off and as usual it was "why you harshing my mellow dude?" Fuck! These assholes thinking their speed demons racing through the pack has got to stop.

It was once the squad car rolled up to the two guys the one with my friends bike just stood there and didn't attempt to run and the other one rode away.
I did brake my nose and punctured it. Thanks you so much for caring, I went to General the day after and they worked on me for like about 3 hours and waited around for another 3. I didn't want to take an ambulance because of the expense but I got my sister to take me to the EMERGENCY room on Saturday morning.
6 Stitches and my Nose is fractured into three parts, on Friday they are going to straiten out my nose and remove the stitches (I hope all goes Good).
I hope to join you great people some time soon.

The July RWNN route is 20 miles.. I can't stress this enough...PLEASE STAY BEHIND THE MUSIC....There are turns that you will miss if you ride ahead of us.......Stay with the pack....if you stop to help someone fix a flat, move to a lit area....I'll be handing out route slips so if you need to cut out early to catch a train or just wanna bail, you can figure out where to do so...
This ride has been drama free and I hope to keep it that way.
1st stop is at a Ralphs at around the 9 mile mark...bring water to hold you over unti then...
2nd stop will not be at a store...but there is a liquor store across the street a block away i think....
Be safe, don't swerve, call out holes in the street, stay to the right...just don't be an asshole...have fun and the ride is leaving at 9pm....NOT BIKE TIME.

i'm giving out route slips......I always yell out to anyone on the side of the road "everything ok?" or "need any help?".... I recommend doing the same if you see someone...I met Louis, Dingo, and Sexy all on the same night just stopping to help with a flat....
to rant for a second....on "the practice" eugene defended a guy against manslaughter of a teenager...the kid asked how he can repay him...he turned to him and said THE NEXT TIME YOU SEE A 10 YEAR OLD KID....PRETEND HE'S MINE.
When you see a stranded cyclist, pretend it's you and offer to help out. strength in numbers.

And i think even if people say they are ok a couple of people should stop anyway just to have more strength in numbers. I think five people including tthe person with the flat is a good number to get to the next stop.

Music trailer person. I have a question.
I asked you about a particular song and you said
it was "Afternoon" by modest lover. I can't seem to find
them or that song anywhere.
Do I have the name right? or do you have a
link to some info?
And great ride as usual fellas.
My vote for most solid ride.
i always dug ROADRUNNER...i even went as far as calling klos and kroq asking what song had the lyrics "with the radio on" and "i'm in love with rock n roll"
they had no clue...then Al ^ was playing it on sfvcm and i checked out jonathan richman and the modern lovers the next day ....hooked ever since...

There are no liquor store or market stops on the ride this month. It worked well on Ladie's Night last week and there's less drama when people aren't drinking as much. 2 stops.
BYOB, water, soda, etc....
There are turns at the bottom of some downhills so please stay behind the music trailer or else you will miss the turns. We will (hand) signal turns 1/2 block before them.
I'm really looking forward to this ride. So much so, in fact, that I'm staying home from work today to get over my cold JUST SO I CAN MAKE THIS RIDE. A-yup.
i am.. i live off fairfax and oakwood... but ill be riding down to venice and fairfax to meet up with the westsiders.. or head over to CM park if i have time.. depends when i get off work
I was going to skip this, well all MR rides because they have become rolling drunk frat parties IMHO..... I'm not saying that people shouldn't drink... that's kool with me, since my first MR ride back when, people have had various beverages etc... but it was more about being a cyclist, having fun etc.
remeber when people knew what to do when they heard someone shout out Midnight Ridazz... see ya tonight.
no liquor stops: bring your own whatever it is you drink. If you have to use a bathroom, grab a friend and find a quiet place :)
That's the only negative about not stopping at a market...but the trade off is less drinking meaning fewer jackasses meaning fewer crashes (hopefully).
on the 4th street bridge, when we come to the end of it, we're taking the exit on the left before it starts to go downhill and making a left on mateo.
on 4th street in mid city at the bottom of a slight downhill, we're making a right on Hoover.
Try to remember these 2 turns and STAY BEHIND THE MUSIC.
The music trailer and I will be leading the ride so if you go with the pack ahead of the music, you're probably gonna end up going the wrong way. If you don't know what I look like, click on my profile.

I'm resting up tonight, but I'll be on the polo court tomorrow. -------{}
Bertha thank you so much for the ride home last night!
Thanks Lance for rescuing my tooth, and everyone else for making my birthday such a fun night to remember!
Fuuuuuuuuuuuck! I wish someone had taken a picture of me missing my front tooth! Would have been awesome for Hooray For Crashes! Did anyone get a picture??? If not, damn. Also....uh....did anyone see how I fell? Did I hit something, or just lose control? I don't know what happened, I just went from riding one second to hitting the ground the next.
I won't be leading the RWNN or even riding this Friday. Harry and some friends of mine will be leading the ride with their own route they have made. Sorry for the short notice. I hope everyone has a safe and fun time on the ride and please stay behind Harry and the leaders.

There is going to be one long hill.
I HATE HILLS. But this one is gradual and zig zaggy and it's doable. You'll feel good about yourself after you do it. If my fat ass can ride it it's not that bad. Harvey, who is 100 years old rides it every day but a noob on cruiser may not be able to make it. And noobs on fixies who don't know how to go down hill may hurt themselves.

That Marino is a prophet! I will forever now bow down to this divine spirit.
Man I came this close, |<-->| to getting some killer shots of those fixie ridazz going down. I was thinking as I was rolling up to that curve, this is the spot I need to stop and watch what happens. All the sudden there's one sliding in front of me, and one behind me. Not sure how they missed me, but they did. I thought for sure the one in front need the ambulance after I saw him face plant into a car wheel! But the dude was up and walking after I turned around.
We need more rides with hills! But make sure we're off to the side, so we can watch the show, yeah?

At Daly and Griffin I rode through a pile of metal scrap/nails? in the intersection and got a flat. Ironically the only flat I've gotten in the last 1 1/2 years happened to be on the RWNN...the one time I didn't lead it. I went home after that.
That guy didn't know WTF he was talking about stupid shit it's all good he hit me then I got held back by the homie when they set me loose he hops the fuckn gate it's all good imma do what I have to do why his homies got to back him up he couldn't talk for him self he dosent know what his ass just got into

does anybody remember the exact route we rode from silverlake park to that park in hancock park? i'm trying to map this ride out but i was too drunk by then to remember the route hahaah
for the most part that was the route. i changed up a going thru chinatown nd the ending we took olympic into DTLA.
thanks for coming out again. I gotta say thanks to a few people. BIG BIKE DAN and an unknown dude helped my good friend fix a broken chain right at the roll time of 9pm...and some dude BRYANT really stepped up and helped guide the ridazz and was vocal about calling out turns just being way cool the whole night...and I thank him for that...
If you took pics on the ride, please post them over there <--------
such a fun ride!!! it was my first no name ride and I've been to many rides... shout out to everyone who went to under the 6th street bridge to keep the ride going all night...
A few people asked me who otis is re: the spoke card. He was my dog that passed away a few weeks ago. My gf wanted him to be on the spoke card so voila....."my name is otis"
I hate to bring up the negative experience of last nights ride but it should be noted as word of precaution for everybody. While crossing Adrmore at Western we stopped to wait for a clearing to Western. The ride started across the street I had to pee and saw a closed down strip mall on the other side of Western. So I stopped and relieved myself. When I finished peeing everybody had passed, the ride moved on. I got back on my bike and started riding up the street. I noticed about five people hanging out in their front yard, I didn't think anything of it, just more people out checking out the ride going by. Then boom, I hear the fence swing open. I look back and see out of the corner of my eye and hear somebody start running after me, I hear what sounded as a stereo typical cholo yell "get back hear puto"! Needless to say I just went into flight mode and booked up the street. It was uphill to the next street which was 11th, there was a few people from the ride hanging at the corner. I didn't look back until I had turned on 11th and saw that the person wasn't chasing me anymore. I don't how much effort he put into chasing me. He might have tried, he might have given up as soon as I got the lead on him.
I would hate to see what would have happened if I got a flat or was not strong enough to out ride his run. It could of happen to somebody that couldn't have gotten away or didn't know better, who knows how that could have resulted. I do know by the way this person came after me and the tone in his voice it was not friendly.
Yes the route was great, but ever since the Neverland ride, I know for myself I have been uncomfortable about going on rides that go into lower income neighborhoods that have higher street crime rates. This was a somewhat close call. Be careful out on rides. Don't stop by yourself. Have a group of friends stop with you when you have to.
Fuck that sucks. You mean around Ardmore and Olympic? I think that's where the dude kept yelling at us for an Aerospoke, we were towards the back of the pack, we thought it was funny at the time. He was tweaking hard or something.
Damn! It's been over 10 years since I moved from Ktown and riding my bike as a kid... as long as you got west of Western... it was all good. Glad you made it out ok. I had a flat down on pico and the 10fwy... by myself... no other cyclists passing by. Then someone w/ a fullsize floor strapped to his backpack showed up and helped me out. I forgot his name... this was back in 06 but I could still remember his face. I've never seen him since but man he was a godsend. We definitely need to watch each others back... Btw.. thanks for waiting for me load my bike sexy awhile back in dtla... I really appreciated that!!
My mistkae <---(that is intentional). I looked at the map and it was Olympic and Ardmore, not Western and Ardmore. If you look at the map it was the first or second house past the parking lot where that guy came out. Thanks for the support, I was expecting USER1 to make some asinine comment about how stupid I am or that I can't ride 20 miles.
