Oh! It's a ride to Ann Suma's show in Santa Monica.
Now I actually read the whole thing about the ride.
We will ride from The House of Spirits in Echo Park to Track 16 Gallery in Santa Monica for the closing reception of photographer Ann Summa's show of Los Angeles punk rock photos, taken in the late seventies and early eighties.
Info on the show here: http://www.track16.com/exhibitions/ann_summa/index.html
Bands currentlly scheduled to perform at the event include:
HUMAN HANDS
MIKE WATT + MISSINGMEN
PHRANC
CHAIRS OF PERCEPTION (Formerly the URINALS)
DEADBEATS
We'll also be handing out maps of L.A. punk landmarks and limited edition spoke cards.
This event will be well attended. We'll roll at 5:30 pm sharp (not bike time!) in order to get to Track 16 for the 7 pm start. If you can't make the start, join us along the way. Route subject to change . . . hey, it's punk rock!

I'm planning to make this one.

Weirdos, Plugz, X, Germs, Bags, Dils, Alley Cats, Eyes, Zeros, Flyboys, Plimsouls, Dickies, Minutemen, The Last, Go-Go's, Phranc, Black Flag, Fear, Black Randy and the Metro Squad, Suburban Lawns, Gears, Simpletones, Wall of Voodoo, etc.
You get the idea . . . remember, we're talking pre-'83 here!

Excellent band list, Rollers. I can't think of any you missed.

Yes, I was surprised too. Last time I saw them (think, when?) they were called "100 Flowers".
Maybe they're trying to set a record: the same band with the most names?

Yes . . . we should have a soundtrack for this ride. I wonder if Big Bike Dan will be along?

I agree with limefly. Let's coordinate to make a few playlists and give them to Dan. I don't know how to get in touch with him as I'm new to the rides. I have an ipod mini which should work fine if we are only going to have L.A. stuff. shavedmonkey at roadrunner dot com
By the way, I saw the Deadbeats recently at the Masque anniversary recently at the Echoplex and they were amazing. The Eyes were also better than when I was a kid. Sometimes 30 years experience can be a benefit if you play punk rock.
shaved monkey11.30.07 - 8:03 am

Hey Shaved Monkey, I was at that show, too! I agree, The Eyes were especially good; hard to believe I saw them almost 30 years ago. Where has the time gone? Ahhh . . .
The 15th promises more of the same.

However can put together some stuff on a Ipod, please do so, it will be much appreciated. I'll work on contacting BBD.

Several people have expressed interest in putting together playlists or contributing tracks - thanks! Big Bike Dan has confirmed his attendance on this ride. I vote to keep it strictly LA bands. Like someone said above, if you open it to other groups, it's going to be like opening a can of worms. Not that I have any experience in opening a can of worms, but I can only imagine!

I have an MP3 CD on its way to Big Bike Dan. It has Germs, Screamers, Weirdos, Flyboys, Negative Trend (49 songs). I kept it in the time period and L.A. bands.
All of my Dickies, Eyes, Bags, Deadboys, X, Controllers, Allleycats is on vinyl only. If anyone has these please get them to Big Bike Dan. I plan on hopping on the ride somewhere near my house halfway into the ride.

Thanks for doing that, 'monkey . . . that's the kind of stuff we're talkin' about! A lot of my stuff from that period is on vinyl too, no time to convert it right now. I imagine BBD has a few tracks he can add if neccessary, although 49 songs (even punk rock) should fill a good amount of time.

I just thought I would let you know that I have some of the stuff that you guise apparently only have on vinyl, already ripped and ready to go.

Hey PC,
Great stuff! I have the Screamers and Germs covered, but the Rhino 39, X Early stuff), Eyes, Dickies, Middle Class and anything else Mr. Rollers and Dan doesn't have will be a fine addition. Do you have "Disneyland" by the Eyes or "I Slept In An Arcade" by Black Randy?
shaved monkey12.9.07 - 10:05 pm
reply
I'll have to check on "Disneyland," but I've definitely got the Black Randy. It was part of the Hollywood Sleaze Ride playlist.
PC12.9.07 - 10:14 pm

I have "Disneyland" by the Eyes on cassette, if anyone can transfer it to digital. Yeah, great song-"blow up Disneyland!"
Playing that in public now could get someone arrested, but in 1979 it was funny.
I also have "I slept in an arcade" by Black Randy and the Metro Squat on vinyl. Thats how we listened to music back then.

Black Randy: I Slept In Arcade
Man, I love that song.
I've got Disneyland on MP3 if it's still needed. FYI, the Dangerhouse Vol 1 comp is on eMusic.
And someone mentioned Monitor earlier. Anyone have old tapes of New Wave Theatre or the DVD reissues? One of them has Monitor doing a great version of their creepy song "I Saw Dead Jim's Shade". I'm sure it's on youtuber, too.
See ya at the show.

I don't think the Monitor performance is on YouTube, unfortunately. I think I would have found it if it were.

I happily stand corrected!
PC12.10.07 - 12:08 am

Now, can you find me the performance by Little Itch? They had a song with these lyrics in the refrain:
Los Angeles is the mother
But her arms won't keep you warm
Her arms are the outskirt freeways
They'll never keep you safe from harm...
It boggles my mind that that song was never a hit, even within the punk scene. Just the refrain would have been good bumper music for a local radio talk show.
PC12.10.07 - 12:17 am

Not to be picky, but Ch3 is from the OC i believe and the Minutemen were from Pedro. How exclusive are you trying to make the permissible bands?
And since we are in a sharing mood here, i thought i'd share some photos i've taken of Ch3, Redd Kross & The Nymphs (yay Inger)
Redd Kross

Well, my general idea was to have music from bands that played in L.A. from roughly '79-'83, which is the period covered by the photo show we'll be riding to. The Minutemen were definetely part of that, plus there's a big photo of them in the show and Watt's Missingmen are playing that night, so bring on the Minutemen, yes!
Great list PC, if you have away of getting some of those files to BBD that would be most excellent.

Pedro is LA. And there was a lot of crossbreeding and intermingling between the OC, LA and Hollywood scenes. LA punk was definitely a car-based culture; piling into somebody's car and driving 30-40 miles to see a show every weekend was a very common thing.

Rollers, that was so cool! Perhaps in the spring it would be fun to put together a ride that went to some of the locations you identified. Maybe a weekend day time ride or something.
