FBI
Thread started by studiodrome at 12.20.07 - 3:42 pm

I was questioned by the FBI today, for taking photos of a nuclear power plant a few months ago. They mentioned the patriot act and asked about environmental activism and bicycling. they had a stack of papers about me, it was pretty interesting. I recommend not taking pictures of nuclear powerplants. having the FBI knocking on your front door then showing up at your work with lots of info on you is nerve racking.

That's crazy!!

Years ago I was a reference for some people who were getting security clearances. They called my house, and when they couldn't find me they went to my department and started asking around about me. I eventually learned they were looking for me from a professor.

I did an interview with this guy and it was bizarre. He was casual and then out of nowhere he would deliver a zinger. It would be like:

"So do you ever hang out with X outside of school"
I answer "blah blah blah"
"Ever go out for a beer or something with X"
me = "blah blah blah"
"Did he ever advocate the violent overthrow of the government?"

WHAT??!

how did i handle them?

I was not a smart ass. I was very calm and answered most of their questions. Some i wouldn't but i gave them good reasoning behind this. They were as cool as they could be under the circumstances, but they were also very serious.

Under the Patriot Act since you are dealing with National Security you do not have the rights you do with the police. The entire thing is very odd and didn't seem for real.

I met them on the street across from where i work. there were two of them in two separate unmarked cars. they ask you many questions that they already know the answers to. then they show you a beautiful file with tons of info they have on you, and pictures of you from who knows where.

That's the one somewhere near Phoenix if I'm not mistaken.
That place seems like it's out in the middle of another desert, so someone must've snitched you out.
If they worked at the plant, understandable.
If they were a normal civilian, find 'em and give 'em the "pineapple" treatment.

the subject is pouring a strange viscous substance thats smells of vegitable oil into an opening on the side that is normally reserved for petrolium based fuel. While the vehicle's emmisions have a very distinct odor they seem to be lacking in many of the toxic compunds that are normally emmited by petrolium based vehicles. This could indicate a serious threat to national security and deserves further investigation.

I strongly recommend taking pictures of whatever the fuck you feel like taking pictures of. The best way to deal with these lunatics and their attempts to create a lockdown culture is casual civil disobedience. Don't make a big dramatic thing of it, but live your life as though the wingnut rules didn't exist. Eventually they'll have so many files that they'll choke on them, and they'll all be meaningless anyway.

"I strongly recommend taking pictures of whatever the fuck you feel like taking pictures of. The best way to deal with these lunatics and their attempts to create a lockdown culture is casual civil disobedience. Don't make a big dramatic thing of it, but live your life as though the wingnut rules didn't exist. Eventually they'll have so many files that they'll choke on them, and they'll all be meaningless anyway."

I concur... but do it anonymously if possible. It adds to the confusion.

or better yet ... use a film camera with no film.
That will really fuck with them.

Ha, well you are allowed to take pictures of the nuclear powerplants. It just means you might have the FBI knocking on your door. The Palo Verde plant in Arizona is the largest in the country and in a very remote location.

It is important to read the Patriot Act.

Never, ever talk to the FBI. Ever. Except to say, 'Please send your questions to my lawyer.'

Very Orwellian experience there. It makes me wonder how many people that show up to these rides are there to gather information? Despite my opnions on mixing politcs and bikes, it is the way things are going and it would not be a big leap in logic to think that some government agency has been keeping tabs on the bike scene for some time.

Of course putting your ideas on the internet makes it accessible and able to be documented (ctrl c anyone?) by anyone that wants to.

There is a program called echellon that is ran by our government that intercepts e-mail, faxes, and cell phone calls. The feds take this stuff and filter it, looking for buzz words like "bomb" or "attack" and then look further I suppose.. I read up on it a while back, some of my info may be fuzzy on the subject. Regardless, it's something to think about. How much of this information gets cataloged for "future" use? Scary.

For a brief time, many moons ago I was involved with a girl that was militant Vegan. She went to protests etc. They were in my opinion skirting what the government would deem "dangerous or terrorist" activity. I felt it was pretty harmless, but what ever... The thing was is that they talked about all this crazy crap like bombings, killing people etc. Not that I took them seriously, but someone could. It's just talk right? Well, they would send e-mail back and forth to each other with this kind of stuff going on. If one were to read some message in a strangers e-mail, how easy would it be to take it out of context?

I imagine they monitor this site as well. I figure at some point, an undercover agent from local, state, or federal government has gone on most of these rides to see if they pose a threat. All you need is a computer and a bicycle, it's that easy.

Paul.

Oh my god, it's just like that episode of The Twilight Zone, where everyone in a small town starts to suspect each other of being an undercover alien being....
