RIP EDDIEBOYINLA
Thread started by DeKadenzy at 08.13.13 - 6:29 pm

We have lost one of our most colorful and much loved ridazz in the history of MR. Eddie boy passed away 8/6 at the hunington hospital. He didnt let anyone know he was sick and I didnt find out till today. The hospital will not give anymore information on what caused his death. He had no family.... just us. Lets dedicate a ride to his memory. Hopefully (and yes he rubbed some the wrong way) we can just appreciate the best of riding with EDDIEBOY and love who he was, just like i came to love him. I WILL MISS YOU

EddieboyinLA was one of the first people to start running a night of mechanical work at the Oven by himself back in the 2006 or 2007.

He had a very hard life and for a time, when he was able to make enough to survive, he was able to share the basic human decency he was able to maintain throughoutt the massive trials his life put him through.

He was a certified CISCO router tech, and could do large scale networking work - but his prison record kept him from getting hired anywhere that needed people with his skill set.

He made his own electronics for his bikes.

He survived for years with some serious illnesses and found the time to volunteer at the Oven for at least 2 years straight - teaching others and being part of the team.

He broke vises he snapped tools he soldered broken circuit boards together and he designed his own dynamo powered headlight with a battery and cell phone charger built into it.

You will be missed Eddie.

He definitely was a genius at electronics. He picked it all up when he was in prison.

That one time after he smashed himself up good during a crank mob, I picked him up from the hospital and hung with him for a bit. He really came across as a tough crazy fuck, but when you got to know him he was a real sensitive soft heart. A really smart guy.

GONNA MISS YOU CRAZY EYE EDDIE !!!

He was a lot of ridazz first (or second) friend on rides, including this rida. Always was willing to help. With his passing a good chunk of MR has also gone with him. He was truly one of those people that believed and put into practice the NO RIDA LEFT BEHIND way of MR. I remember still seeing him at Polo a few weeks ago. That was his new thing... coming by and hanging out on Wednesday nights. Never gave us an inclination he was going through something... altho he was calmer than I'd ever seen him, almost like the fire had gone out. This really breaks my heart. Ride in Peace big fella.

Here's my memory of Eddie. It's from way back when. I was stopped at the head of a group at a red when Eddie comes cruising through looking like be was going to jump the light. There was cross traffic approaching and I yelled at him to stop.

He did, and then gave me an ultra-crazy glare look like he was seriously going to cut me, but he hadn't decided where yet.

After a few moments being burned by those eyes, I told him to go easy, that I was just looking out for him. He thought about that for a moment, then eased up.

"I saw the car, man," he said. "I don't need you yellin at me."

The light turned green and he rode ahead of me. I called out "I yell because I care, Eddie."

He turned back and looked at me with those mad eyes, but there was a big smile slow them.

Rest in peace, Eddie.

Just like you July, he was one of the first ridazz I met and always made me feel welcome when I didn't know anyone. Every time I saw him on a ride, he'd always nod hello and even to the end, made me always feel welcom.e

I'm really sad to hear that he's passed on and with him goes one of the more colorful ridazz. He covered my ass one night. Some locals were hassling me and he went up to them and said a few words and they left me alone. Thanks Eddie, I was scared shitless until you came up and helped this new ridazz.

Sad that I'll never see you again on a ride. I will always miss you.

Damn. Im holding back tears reading (an feeling) all the love that everyone including myself had for eddieboy. And im also holding back tears knowing how beautiful this community is for cherishing a wild ass soul like eddieboy. In perhaps only this loving accepting community eddieboy found a family where the rest of the world shunned him for whatever troubled past he had. No rehabilitation program, no govt reintegration program no non profit could ever have provided the stability and love that this group provided him even when he acted a fool. I would see him on rides and being his loud colorful self and ebing stoked thinking about how stoked he seemed on life when he was with everyone of us. He knew what he found with all of us was love and acceptance and i think it changed eddie's life. eddieboyinla had so much love to give in return too. he was always ready to protect a rida or help a rida out. always stoked.

What a larger than life character. I wish i wasnt on the other side of the earth right now i would come join in the celebration ride of eddieboys life.

If what i read on fb is true that he is being buried in a mass grave or by the county because he had no one to account for him well fuck that, lets throw down some money and get him creamated and spread his ashes somewhere special. He was a troubled soul abandoned by the world but not by us.

not only because Eddieboy was one of those people who just completes...or completed, fuck...a ride but also because all this shows what a beautiful strong community we are.

WE CANNOT LET HIM BE THROWN IN SOME MASS GRAVE OR CREMATION OR WHATEVER IT IS THEY DO...WE ARE HIS FAMILY. LET'S BAND TOGETHER AS WE HAVE SO MANY TIMES BEFORE AND MAKE SURE HE GETS A PROPER FAREWELL.

For what it is worth, I just did some quick research. #1 piece of advice seems to be to go nowhere near a funeral home for cremation. Talk directly with a crematory for 'reasonable' pricing. The county officials may have some recommendations for low cost cremation, as even that option can run to thousands of dollars if we aren't careful. It's a very worthy goal, and I'm betting this community will oversubscribe, but I'm sure there's a bike collective that could use a donation in Eddie's name if there's a surplus, so let's make that happen.

I once gave Eddie a Ride all the way to his place in Pasadena at 3am after he was too drunk and tired to ride. He humbly declined but was super thankful for the ride. After that he would hit me up to ride but we lost touch after I left SoCal to go to school in Oregon. He called me once after I left and I decided to keep the voicemail as a reminder to ride with him after I graduated....

I graduated in 2011 and stayed in OR an extra year until April 2013.

I'm sad I never had a chance to ride with him one more time.

I don't know what to say. The dude was clearly technically and mechanically savvy, ambitious, eager to be of service, etc. yet there was somehow no room for him in the society he was born into.. Go figure, huh?

But rather than dwell on how fundamentally screwed up THAT is, I think I'll just keep in mind how lucky he was to find a community that did have room for him, even if it wasn't always an easy fit. He sure seemed content when I used to see him hanging by himself at Echo Park Lake in the early afternoon, smoking weed and enjoying the view, waiting for some MOM Ridaz event that didn't start until, like, 10:00 or some shit. Ride on, eddieboyinla.

Very smart Sam. Funeral homes are fucked up like that.

Lets get a price from county on cremation. Keep it no frills and have a ride where we can spread his ashes somewhere special to eddieboy.

Simple cremation, with no fancy casket (that would just burn up anyway) and ashes returned to the family = about 600 bucks at the place in the South Bay that I used when I was in that situation a few years ago. More like 900 if you want it "expedited" (inside a week). Either way they handle all the arrangements with the hospital, transportation and all that. Just throwing that out there as a figure for comparison. This was at a combined cemetery/funeral home/crematorium--no middleman.

Do we know for a fact that nobody he's related to is stepping up to claim his remains?

From what I have heard Eddie has no family to claim his body, We should start trying to figure out how to claim his body and give him a funeral. I don't want to disrupt any plans that may have already been made for him but I fear that the only family he had was us and we should do what we can to make sure he gets a proper burial/cremation so he can rest in peacel.

ITS HARD TO TYPE IN ALL CAPS AND ITS EVEN HARDER TO DO WHEN CRYINGi

I MET EDDIEBOY ON THE PILLOWFIGHT RIDE #1. HE HAD THIS CRAZY CROOKED EYEBALL AND A CERTAIN WAY OF HOLDING YOUR ATTENTION EVEN WHEN YOU WANTED TO RUN.

WE BECAME FRIENDS AND SMOKED WEED AND RODE TOGETHER FREQUENTLY. ONE TIME AFTER A LOT OF DRINKING AND TOO MUCH PARTY HE STABBED ME ON A TRAIN IN PASADENA.

EDDIE WAS A FREQUENT GUEST AT BIKE POLO IN NOHO AND EAST LA.

EDDIE WOULD SPEND AN HOUR FIXING YOUR WHEEL IN A BAD NEIGHBORHOOD AND RIDE WITH YOU FOR MILES JUST BECAUSE HE LOVED MIDNIGHT RIDAZZ.

HE WAS AN INSPIRATION TO ME AND TO MANY OTHER PEOPLE, ITS SO SAD THAT HE DIED ALONE.!

LETS DO WHAT WE CAN TO MAKE HIS FUNERAL/MEMORIAL/CREMATION AN ACCURATE REFELCTION OF HIS LIFE .....

I read the news on my phone before I got out of bed this morning. And I cried for an hour. Then I brushed my teeth, and cried some more. EDDIEBOYINLA was family. He was always friendly. Sometimes he got upset because he thought people were being mean to him. He was a sensitive guy. At first glance, EDDIEBOYINLA could be intimidating, but his loud, happy voice and smile and the positive things he said and his warm demeanor made you forget about your first impression in an instant.

EDDIEBOYINLA was everywhere. I can't remember where I met him....he was everywhere, all the time. Pasadena, DTLA, Echo Park, Crank Mob Park. He'd be at all the rides and I'd see him on the train, rolling up to polo with that godawful techno blaring, or somewhere else around town. Back before the ride calendar flourished, EDDIEBOYINLA would make sure there was a ride happening if a Friday night came around without anything posted. DTLA FRIDAY RIDE was one of the best, because it was all just a bunch of misfit bike nerds who just wanted to ride with some friends.

EDDIEBOYINLA taught us all things. He taught me that there's a place for misfits, that there are people who will befriend you even if you don't meet society's standard of normal, that NO RIDA LEFT BEHIND was a real thing, not just on rides, but within a community that gave a fuck about each other and was loving and forgiving and didn't care about the bullshit status quo and valued people for who they were, no matter fucking what. He was intensely friendly and enthusiastic. Yes, he had a hard life, and part of what he taught me (us?) was that sometimes you just have to let it go and appreciate the good things and smile, big, and do your damn thing. If that's riding the heaviest mountain bike loaded with lights and music and chains, then cool, do it.

It's tough to find your place in the world. MR is made up of so many misfits and oddballs, who are kooky and brilliant and damn the world if it shuns them, MR will embrace them all. It always amazed me how EDDIEBOYINLA found MR after all the other things life presented him with, and how stoked he was to know and ride with us all. Those DTLA Friday rides, man...I was always so happy that he wanted to get everyone together to ride, without a route plan, just because --because it meant I could be a part of that, be with people who held no expectations or pretense but to just have a good time riding and drinking and smoking and being out in the night and damn the rest of the world. He was a regular at LABP, one of our honorary members no doubt. He'd cheer and heckle with the best of them, showed up to our first tourney and took a bunch of upside down pictures and filmed the most epic match of all time, the 18-on-18 game at the rink. Do you remember that? EDDIEBOYINLA did. He came out to DTLA polo and then to NELA when we moved there, always totally stoked for us and totally sincere and real. Sometimes he'd catch you off guard and say something really insightful and sensitive and even though he had his own toughness he could break down anybody's walls and have them smiling in a heartbeat. He was misunderstood by many, but loved by us. I don't know if I'm rambling yet, just...fuck...be happy, share your weed and your beer, and ride your heart out, because that's how EDDIEBOYINLA would have wanted it.

Thank you Louis and Brad for checking up on our friend. RIDE ON EDDIEBOYINLA.

What a special dude.
He told me how his mom gave him some money to get bread from the store. He stole the bread and bought a flashlight. That night he couldn't stop flashing his flashlight on and off under the covers so after a warning his mom just stomped the flashlight to pieces.

the next day he worked and worked to try and figure out how to make that flashlight work again and as he told it to me, that was his start in working with electronics.

A lot of people float in and out of the bike scene, but Eddieboy was truly a lifer.
A hardcore ridaa with ridaa ethics before he met us and till his dying day.

How do we go about this? PC, you've had experience with cremation before could you contact them and see what we need to do? Does anyone have experience with getting a body from the city? I do not. I can give money or handle a honey-do list if I someone wants to make one but I have no experience in this realm. How much time do we have before the city interns him, and can we intervene even though we're not family? I know it's macabre and all but I get the feeling that if we don't act fast we will lose this chance for proper closure.

I WAS RIDING ALONE TRYING TO CATCH UP TO RWNN A FEW YEARS AGO WHEN I SAW A GUY ACROSS THE STREET RIDING AROUND LIKE A MANIAC THEN JUMPING ONTO THE SIDEWALK, STOPPING THEN FLIPPING HIS BIKE OVER TO FIX A MECHANICAL IN WHAT SEEMED LIKE 5 SECONDS TIME. I YELLED TO SEE IF HE NEEDED HELP BUT ALL HE YELLED BACK WAS “I’M LOST”. AT THIS POINT I STILL HAD NO CLUE WHO THIS STRANGER WAS AND IF I COULD OFFER NO MECHANICAL HELP, I WAS GOING TO BE ON MY WAY AS I AM NOT THE BEST PERSON TO GIVE DIRECTIONS. I HADN’T SEEN EDDIEBOYIN LA FOR ABOUT A YEAR SO IT TOOK ME A WHILE TO RECOGNIZE HIM IN THE RAIN ACROSS THE STREET (HE DIDN’T HAVE ON HIS LIGHTS AT THAT POINT AND IT WAS PRETTY DARK OUT). WHEN I FINALLY REALIZED IT WAS HIM, I TOLD HIM TO FOLLOW ME GUESSING HIS DESTINATION WAS THE SAME AS MINE BUT AFTER A FEW SECONDS HE YELLED HE WAS OK AND LIT UP AND I WAS ON MY WAY AGAIN. IT WAS ANOTHER FEW YEARS UNTIL I RAN INTO HIM AT THE OVEN AND HE LOOKED COMPLETELY DIFFERENT, I THOUGHT HE WAS GOING THROUGH WITHDRAWALS OR SOME CRAZY SHIT BUT I HAD NO IDEA HOW TOUGH HIS BATTLE TRULY WAS. HE WAS THE KINDA GUY WHO WOULD SIT NEXT TO YOU IN ANY ALLEYWAY ANY TIME OF NIGHT AND CHILL UNTIL YOU FIXED YOUR FLAT OR OFFERED TO DO IT HIMSELF. My first recollection of Eddie was around 2006. He was on the Gold Line heading back to Pasadena having just come from a Midnight Ridazz ride. He was arguing with the guy he brought (his cousin?). His companion wasn't too thrilled with the ride, but Eddieboy had found religion, he spoke the gospel of Midnight Ridiazz. It was like I was witnessing a pentecostal moment, flaming bicycles may as well have appeared above his head.

Like people have said, he was family. He was One-Of-Us. He was the poster child of this place where everyone can belong. Proof that we are more than our worse moments, proof we are all connected, that we are all in this together.

Let's honor his memory this Saturday. Let's bury our dead when the time comes.

i refused to answer him when he said "hey white boy!," but i always had a beer for him when he tried his best to look me in the eye and say hello.

he was one of the sweetest crazy fucks out there and like many, one of the first people to make a real impression on me when riding. on my first critical masses, he was always a head figure leading us to stops, scolding people for trash, and just having a good old time.

the first time i talked to him, i walked up to him in the area outside the downtown ralphs and offered him a beer from the pack i had just bought. he asked if he could have two. i handed him a second. he asked for a third. i kind of chuckled and told him no. he thanked me for the beer and said it was a nice sign of respect for a new rider to make the offer.

i always appreciated that exchange.

i had no idea how much time i would end up spending with him after that night. from every ride i showed up to to every downtown polo night i sat around bullshitted at. he was the type of guy i'd probably look away from as i passed on the street, but our community made me realize he should have been given a hundred more chances in life than he ever got. if there's an afterlife, i hope it has sidewalks.

I met him a few times a long time ago, on the rides of course. He had a way of commanding attention without drowning in ego, how he rolled was how he lived; rolling on the steel breeze. He was friendly, out spoken, and he had a crazy look in his eye, a look not of insanity but a piercing gaze that made you question your motives. The first time I met him, he was part of a smoking session and I asked if I could take a toke. He responded with "Put in 5 and you can". As he passed the weed around, I calmly took a joint out of my pocket and lit it, took deep puffs and I passed it to him. He said "Thanks brother. That's better than a five". I took a liking to him that night.

EDDIEBOYINLA, YOU WILL BE MISSED!!

Im not able to remember what ride we met on, but probably sometime around the year 2007 or 2008. He rode a heavy mountain bike with wide handlebars. Even back then he did have a lot of electronics attached to his handlebars and a stereo that bumped kind of bad techno music. I would see him on rides, helping other riders, fixing flats, and yelling on the rides. He was always friendly to me, and always a pleasure to talk to. This bums me out.

After a late into the night valley ride, Eddieboy and Big Bike Dan came over to my house to crash. They stayed in the front room. I was sleeping and Dan says, hey Sexy you might want to come out to the front room. I came out and my 80 something year old Dad was walking around naked. Eddie was smiling and talking with my Dad.
I was mortified and ushered my Dad into the bathroom to get dressed. After I got my father dressed, I came out to apologize. Dan responded "oh that no problem Sexy" Eddieboy blurts out "Man, Pops got a big a dick". We all started busting up.
Whenever I saw Eddie after that he would ask me how my father was doing and always got around to reminding me of the size of my father anatomy. I think if Dan wasn't there, my Pops would have remained naked until woke up on my own.

There is not much I have done to be embarrassed about in my life to where I wouldn't want to look someone in the eye. Eddieboy was in trouble (as I remember) facing a third strike for allegedly pulling a knife on a security guard at the Metro station. I don't know exactly what happen, but he needed people to come and vouch for him and testify if they where witness to the episode. I told him I would come down and help him out. I told a friend of mine (who has proverbially taken bullets for me in the past) what I was planning to do, he was dead set against and persuaded me not to help Eddie out. My friend felt I was putting myself at big risk for a guy I ride with.
I never came through for Eddieboy. I didn't see him again for around year after. He was cool to me, but I couldn't really pretend like he was pretending that I let him down. I had to tell him how embarrassed I was that I said I would help him and didn't. He gave me forgiveness. It was genuine. Luckily the charges got dropped and he didn't have to spend his last days behind bars. He told me nobody else came through either, but it was cool with him because they never prosecuted him. It may sound cold and uncool for me to say this. Yes we may have accept him but when it came
time that he needed help we as a community left him behind.

I know it customary to say Rest in Peace. As I knew Eddieboy he ain't about resting. He was about partying and having a good time. He wasn't just that, he was very helpful and willing to be of service. The first time I meant him I was out by Ubray's and stop over at his pad. Eddieboy decided to man the bikeoven on Monday night by himself. Josef must have a good judge of character to open his garage to some dude none of us really knew. I didn't know what to make of him when I meant him. My first impression was that this dude is kinda crazy. Turn out he was crazy, in a good loving way. He was a good man. I'm glad I got to know him.

Tear it Eddieboy, have a good time partying where ever you are at and say Hi to Pops for me!

Yes. See how all the different groups came together, we have not all gotten along all the time. That was an immense pouring out of brotherhood, sisterhood, and riderhood for everyone who set aside their plans to celebrate one of our own. Good to see old faces, perhaps more grizzled and gray than before, but young at heart, all of us.

Thanks!

OH MAH GAWD.

OH MA..

HAVEN;T BEEN ON THIS SITE IN FOREVER AND THEN I HEAR BOUT ALL THIS AND THAT..

EDDIE EMBODIES A WORLD OF EARLY EXPERIENCES OF MIDNIGHT RIDAZZ THAT I HOLD SO SO SO SO OH SO EXTREMELY CLOSE TO MY HEART.

THERE IS NO WAAAAAAAAYYY I COULD EVEN BEGIIIIIIINNN TO DESCRIBE THE PHENOMENON OF THOSE EXPERIENCES AND HOW GREAT THAT MAN FIT INTO IT.

MAN..

IF I COULD SIT IN A CIRCLE WITH EDDIE BOY CHYNNA STILLINE ANDRES MARCUS B.RAD COECOE ANTOINE ROADBLOCK AND A MILLION OTHER PEOPLE IN 2013 FROM 2000-SOME OTHER TIME OF DIMENSION I WOULD TRADE THE WORLD FOR IT. SO IMPACTFULL THAT TIME AAAAAAAHHHHH IT;S BIG AND LARGE AND YOU GET IT!!!! I KNOW YOU GET IT!!!

YOU GUYS TOTALLY GET IT. I LOVE YOU.

One of the few Ridazz regulars who brought a smile from Glo Ride (the old ones when Mark Ryden the glo'rider was alive) to the last MR ride in the valley. I didn't realize he passed away until I logged in today :(

I'm always going to remember his laughter at some MR rides. Somehow he loves to reply in ALL CAPS as if it was stuck in his keyboard since he first logged in MR. It would seem like some contrast of personas, but the more I've known Eddie in rides and on the board, the more i'm talking to eddie as we all are.

Eddie's death is the biggest shock i've gotten today. Some of us haven't logged in MR in months or years like myself. I feel like in Eddie's spirit to keep us all together, we'd have to reach out and say hello to each other. In the board, in the rides, and in the road. Even if we have an Eddieboy in us reaching out in all caps.

I will miss you Eddie. Ride strong in peace with Glo Rider.
