that whole shitty walk complex has been the bane of the area. they BLOCKED the 101 N from connecting with the 134 east way back in the 60's. there has to be something we can do to push this bike path through along the river that would be the SHIT!

After reading the article it looks like the city has a lot of leverage here - Universal is looking for approval to put in a large residential complex. Not that I want to see that happen, but it seems like giving up a few feet of river access would be a small price for them to pay for that.
Also, I'm surprised that the phrase "eminent domain" hasn't been mentioned.

About a month ago I read another article in the LA Times about extending or finishing the bike path south of Fletcher to the Arroyo. The reason it took them years was that they had to negotiate with each owner along the river and one in particular who was holding out and took them to court.
They had an easement already but technically it was for flood control only not for bike path. They ended up paying a few hundred bucks each parcel owner and 2K to the guy who took them to court. I think he wanted 20K.
Right now, I believe the back entrance to Universal is the easement/service road. It's public property and Universal has been using it exclusively for themselves. As for Spielberg's "office" by the river, it's a fuckin trailer.

The city should institute their "eminent domain" right. A bike path is a public transportation project that could ease traffic and pollution for the whole community and provide an alternative method for commuting.

The beauty of Universal saying that, their 'rich and powerful' can have "their offices" in front of the River, but everybody else, has to go away from that area, just for their 'rich and powerful executive's' security.

With that in mind they are trying to enclose the whole area including the river off to any kind of pedestrianism. Now can you imagine a bike path running through there precious private enclosed community? F-that let's boycott Universal and make the pubic aware of there planed exploitation of the LA River.

I don't think the city ever gave up their rights to eminent domain rights. That would be the dumbest move ever along the river. Looks like what happened is that Universal just built right up to the river's edge.
map!
The LATimes article also stated;
"Although the river was lined with concrete decades ago to protect against flooding, narrow strips of land along both sides have been preserved as rights-of-way for maintenance workers. City officials hope to use those strips to build a bike path on one side of the river and a pedestrian walkway on the other."
Now any money that is used to fight this should be compensated by the losing party. I really don't see this as a bottomless pit as some have suggested.
If Universals excuse is that scripts will be thrown over a some fence, then what prevents someone from spending a buck or two to just mail the script like any sane person would do? Which script are you most likely to get to the big wigs?

Universal right now only cares about short term buck. They don't even care about the future of the backlot. If they build the thousands of residential units they want to build, that will eventually kill the backlot as the residents will start complaining about the noise from filming etc.
They want to sell riverside apartments with view of the golf course. If they build a wall between the housing and the bike path they will lose the view. If they don't put a wall then all the criminals who ride bikes (you know who you are) will have access to their precious community.
I say;
No to the residential community. Keep the movie jobs in LA.
Yes to riverside bikepath. Set a goal of 10% of Universal employees to commute by bike or pay $1,000/employee per year fine.

As far as a bike path along the river within the Universal Studios boundaries: The reason why it won't happen is the Technicolor building sits right on the edge of the river - (so they can pretend they don't dump their chemicals in the water). Other than that, its a straight shot through. You're just talking about money. Its all about the money. But I think you can play the political card with the whole environmental thing. Ask Alex Thompson to translate what I'm trying to say he is now an expert on Borfoisms.
Joe Borfo02.27.08 - 2:21 pm

Last time I walked through there I looked down at the river and Technicolor and Universal are storing a ton of shit on the path next to the river. They're basically getting free storage space, right?
toweliesbong02.27.08 - 2:37 pm
reply
When I worked on the lot, I used to jog down River Road all the time. If memory serves, there's a dirt area between the road and the river that's likely wide enough for a bike path (and there's space along side Technicolor too if they'll give up using it for junk storage).
That scripts-over-the-fence notion must be a joke. Everybody there knows all unsolicited scripts get sent to the legal department and returned, unread to the submitter. End of issue.
If they're really worried about security and high-profile producers, why on earthy would the want to re-route the path into the middle of the studio?
Spielberg has the Amblin compound (not a trailer) and it's pretty well fortified with private security. But security ain't the issue, it's just NIMBL-ism (not in my back lot).
Marino has a great idea. How about hanging a huge banner on the east side of the Lankershim overpass so all the employees can see it from River Road?
And it might not be a bad idea to befriend the

Teaming up with the homeowner's association is a great idea. Just make sure they like the bikepath too. Dare I suggest supporting Tom LeBonge? He may not be your favorite city council member, but he was quoted in the paper supporting the path. If his office gets a lot of letters or e-mails in support of the path, it could help. Definitely use the environmental angle and the overall plan to re-green the LA River. THAT's what's different from the 60's when Universal blocked the freeway. Eco-friendliness is now mainstream and if you can make Universal look like the crabby neighbor keeping the city's children from enjoying a ride along the river, that would be something. There are so many ways to make Universal look bad in this situation. How about pointing out that they're just being greedy in trying to divert the cyclists UP to Citywalk to sell them stuff? And I agree with Mr. Rollers, the path could be very useful if it goes farther and has multiple access points. I don't think it's the most important "bike project" in town, but it is worthy of attention (if it's done right).

I think it ha to do with how the path leads up to this area on both sides. over by forrest lawn there is no place for a bike path on the north side of the river because of the way the tributaries run. and again right at lankershim where there is another connecting tributary. you could build a couple bicycle bridges but, there's not a whole lot of money to do it....

Up to Citywalk then back down adds about 400 feet in elevation gain to what might otherwise be 20 feet downhill! No matter how it's graded, that's a non-starter for families like those who use the other parts of the bike path.
A river doesn't flow uphill and down again... unless it's in a siphon. NBCU would build such a siphon, but it's not for siphoning water...
Bridges? OK, but NBCU should pay for them if they don't want the bike path on the side of the Los Angeles River they adjoin. I would hope they, not we who pay taxes, paid for the road bridge which connects Cahuenga to Citywalk. Remember when Barham was the only bridge over the 101?

Who needs actual scripts? Just get some sheets of paper together that you were planning to recycle, write "SCRIPT" or "SCREENPLAY" on the first sheet and staple 'em together. The point is to demonstrate how absurdly stupid and self-absorbed Universal is, not to actually give them real scripts. Hell, I was thinking of collecting all the old phone books I haven't actually recycled and scrawling "SCRIPT" on those. Don't waste your time trying to gather up actual scripts. You have better things to do.
As for contacting La Bonge's office, you might try his valley office instead of downtown.

from now until they allow the LA river bike path to continue along the riverfront from Downtown to Canoga Park I hereby commit myself to interrupting every NBC news reporter that is non emergency / police related with this question that I happen to run across. I urge my fellow members of the cycling community to do the same.

how about rides dedicated to finding those "on the scene entertainment reporters"?
I want to play fair though, I wont interrupt them if they are covering "real actual" news which is not very often but sometimes they do.

That's fucking great!!!
If I finish my project at the end of this week everyone will have a chance to ask this question. If I don't finish my project I'll probably be fired.

Hell, lets make some scripts that just repeat the question over and over.
Hell, maybe I'll go in to work late one night and print many copies of that great script on NBC Uni's own printers.
D'oh, did I really say that?

towlie you rule dude. we gotta make this "media event" completely newsworthy so the more useless content the more likely the media will show to cover it.

hahahah, I'm so disconnected here. i'm in burbank, not a lot of stuff here since most people have moved to Universal City.
hmmm, maybe I should remove my pictures in case any of my co-workers are reading this thread. this pisses me off to no end so i'll help out as much as possible.
