2nd Annual "Bike Instead of Work Day"
May 12-16, 2008 is celebrated around the country as Bike to Work Week and on Thursday, May 15, 2008, local cyclists will converge on Hollywood and Western in a demonstration of cycling solidarity.
The Hollywood and Western Pit Stop is hosted by illuminateLA and will offer refreshments, swag and encouragement to cyclists from 6 am to 9:00 am followed by a ride to City Hall.
There will also be entertainment and
Hollywood Pro Bike Shop will be offering bicycle tune-ups, all of which will serve to prep the crowd for a ride downtown to "Bang the Drum" at City Hall where we will deliver the Cyclists' Bill of Rights.
Invited guests include Mayor "But I don't look good in spandex!" Villaraigosa, Deputy Mayor Jaime "Hummer" de la Vega, City Council President Eric Garcetti, City Council President Pro Tempore Wendy Greuel, Councilmember Tom LaBonge and our good friends from last year, Deputy Mayor Larry "I'll ride with you in '08" Frank and Caltrans 7 District Manager Doug "I love cyclists" Failing.
This year, after City Hall we head to the
Los Angeles Neighborhood Initiative at USC for free lunch (gotta register online) and a panel discussion on LA's bike plan featuring Erik Knutzen of the
BWC, Lynne Goldsmith of the Metro and...us, the cycling community!
It all starts at Hollywood & Western in the early hours, goes to City Hall and then to USC. Join us for a day of "Biking Instead of Working!"
Bike to Work Day is intended to encourage the cycling community to keep on riding, to educate motorists about cyclists rights to the road and to urge our leaders to support the cycling community with appropriate enforcement.
Last year's ride,
the resulting video,
and some more pics.

LAST YEAR WE PRESENTED THAT BANNER, AND THAT FAKE MEXICAN, DID NOT EVEN COME DOWN THE STAIRS, BUT I SAW HIM 'PEEKING' OUT THE WINDOW, TRYING NOT TO BEING SEEN BY US. MAYBE HE GREW A PAIR, I ESPECIALLY LIKE HIS HANDLING OF THE MAC ARTHER PARK INCIDENT, DID YOU SEE HOW MANY SHOWED UP THIS YEAR ACROSS THE COUNTRY.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT.
DO YOU REALLY THINK HE'LL REALLY HONOR OUR "BICYCLE BILL OF RIGHTS" ???????
I'M MEXICAN, SO DON'T EVEN THINK I'M RACIST, ALL OF MY TRUE FRIENDS FROM MEXICO, ARE ASHAMED OF THE LOS ANGELES MAYOR.

For those of you not interested in the Los Angeles Neighborhood Initiative (LANI) Lunch and Panel at USC there is always Plan B:
As I recall from last year, Rev. Borfo has a bar tab open at Phillipes. Just identify yourself as Rabbi Borfo, Father Borfo, Monsignor Borfo, Friar Borfo or some such variation.

We've got to start a "Bike AS Work campaign" to get some jobs added to the field of bicycling here in LA.
I'm thinking that the MTA should fund some sort of initiative that will somehow pay us all to ride our bikes....
we could also start another big biking organization in town and pay ourselves with it???
(livin the dream)

Velorution - this Thursday!
A swarming mass of cyclists converging and also uniting over a series of very clear objectives....
Flexing our political will, which I believe is stored somewhere between the hips and the ass....
Perhaps also in the calves? Or the Knee-cap?
anyhoozle, I'm excited!!!
also, the muscle between my hips and my ass really hurts today.
forward bends!!

So I was in Woodland Hills this evening and I rode the bus back to the Red Line station and I walked down to the platform and I see a woman with a bike and it looks like Meghan from ALC
Team Midnight Ridazz.
I say hi, then notice that she's holding a bike and I'm not. I realize that my bike is still on the bus! I run, I catch up with the bus, I get my bike and I still make it back to catch the train over the hill.
So I'm indebted to Meghan for reminding me "Never, ever let go of the bike!"

At the risk of looking like a total whore for my blog, I got a bunch of images from this ride up at LA Streetsblog. I would have just put them here, but I can't figure out how to load more than one image at a time to the message boards...

Yesterday was a lot of fun, I don't usually make it out for the group rides, so it was cool to get out on the street a little. Every cyclist should try it, it's just a different experience biking in LA when there's a mob of you.
