Spoke Card Archive
Thread started by

I am a graphic designer and assemblage artist as well as a life-long cyclist. I am currently working on a series of assemblage sculptures inspired by L.A. bike culture.
Apart from these activities, I am also creating a Midnight Ridazz spoke card archive, to document our activities and preserve the wonderful and varied designs people have produced.
The collection will be used for exhibitions and documentation of the L.A. cycling community.
If you have created spoke card designs or organized a ride, and have a spare card you can donate to this project, I would love to hear from you.
In return, I will put you on the archive’s mailing list and alert you to any activity of the archive such as exhibitions and publications. I will also mail out periodic updates.
I would appreciate as much information as you wish to provide about the rides-ride name, date, name of the card designer/artist(s), approximate number of riders, Route map (if not on the card), unusual weather and incidents, etc.
I know traditionally that one must participate in a ride to earn a spoke card, but there is no way I can attend every event and this should be a comprehensive (as much as possible!) collection. I would especially appreciate cards from past rides.
I am starting the archive with the cards I have collected since last December. Here’s what I have:
Crank-mas, Dec. 2006
Ride of Silence, Fullerton, May 2007
The Dark Century I, June 2007
The Dark Metric Century, Aug. 2007
The Dark Century II, Aug. 2007
The Zombie Ride, Aug. 2007
The 10 Bridges Ride, Sept. 2007
The Halloween Ride, Oct. 2007
LA 2 SD, Nov. 2007
Destino, Nov. 2007
Mail your contributions to:

Anyone who knows me will know that I am serious about this, and not out to scam the ridazz.
Thanks for your consideration!

On the same lines of documenting stuff, I run a website of vintage Skateboard Park membership cards mostly from the 70's. Anyone here familiar with old skate pros will recognize Alan Gelfand, Steve Cabalero, Christian Hosoi, Steve Alba, John Lucero, Mike Folmer, Gator, and hundreds of random skaters with jacked up 70's hairdos.
If you have any of your old cards, please scan them and email them to the address on the site.

I don't have a digital presence for my art work. I am terribly old school. I do have two cycling related works in a show in Santa Ana right now. There is a reception Saturday from 6 to 10 pm.

When we made the "Noche 1" cards, we created special ones.
Silver stars,Black Katrinas,White Katrinas but mostly some with written quotes..did anyone get one of those?
deesimple11.30.07 - 2:20 am
reply
Color "TOY RIDE" NELA route is actually a pic of a figurine that was made and photographed for the card..
Thanks to Celeste who also hooked up Raymond's vision for the "Noche Ride 2" design on T shirts and card.

No stars or quotes but a couple of white Katrinas and a few black ones. The special ones where suppose to determine who will have a chance to hit the pinata at the end.

was thinking, maybe it will be a good idea to add with the spoke cards you send. who created the art work on the card.
I'm going to put down a note with all the ones I sent that I know who designed them, who drew the original picture, who creative idea each one would be(because that as far as I can go on photoshop). Even Mil size.
J. Borfo will get credit on lots of these.

The cards will not be returned, yes. I am asking for donations, hopfully from ride organizers and others who have extras left over.
All cards will be recorderd in a spread sheet and stored in the archive for future exhibitions, documentation, etc.
User1, if you are who I think you are, you had a nice wheel full of cool spoke cards. Hang on to those. If you have extras, then please consider sending some to me.
all I want is the extras, ma'm. Just the extras.

I have given a lot of the spoke cards and small flyers from bike rides I've been on since late 2005, but if you're really going to use this stuff to make an archive (for others to see and study), then I'd be glad to hand over the stuff I've collected.
I have a stack of spoke cards and other ride flyers at the Bike Oven, just stop in on a Tuesday or Thursday night and I'll hand the stuff over.
Ask for Josef.

@CT - awesome project!! I've been thinking aboutt this since I started collecting spoke cards years ago from messenger races!! When I came out here and saw MR handing out spokecards I was stoked!! are you looking for MR spokecards in specific or all spoke cards from rides and races in LA?
I would love to see something about the history of the spoke card as well in there... maybe someone else has more info - but from my understanding spoke cards (in their current form) were given out at messenger alleycat races as a way to identify racers with their manifests, and also as a small memorabilia...

wow! i was just going to start a thread called "scan your spokecards" and then this thread caught my eye...
i was also thinking it would be sweet to have an archive of every single solitary spokecard ever produced for any ride, ever.
an ambitious goal, but I think we could pull it off...
i was just sifting through a huge pile of spokecards that i've collected over the past couple years and i will scan them and post them in a photo gallery....eventually.... i have a pretty big pile....
ingipet07.7.08 - 4:47 pm
reply
I am sure there has probably already been one at some point before I started riding but, if not, there should totally be a spoke card show at the Bike Oven or somewhere. I would totally love to see a big grid of spoke cards covering some walls.
If others are interested, I am totally willing to help in whatever way I can to MAKE IT HAPPEN.
theroyalacademy07.7.08 - 6:23 pm

i got inspired and scanned every single spoke card i had in this pile...which is all i've got for now....
the folder is 25 MGs and even zipped it's really big...so emailing or posting might be out of the question.... i'll post them in the photo stream SPOKE CARD ARCHIVE
