What's the fastest you've ever ridden? Are those speedometers the city post up around town good for bikes too ? Cause i get some bogus numbers..

I've done 47 on the Stadium drive. I had a cyclocomp and i can assume its accurate. Routinely hit low to mid 40's out in Agoura when I ride with my brother.

53 mph downhill. On flat land 40 mph with a tailwind 33mph without. I once road my bike 80 miles in three hours and four minutes.

58mph on the tandem - down Hwy 154 in SB. We were completely spun out. Stoker nearly killed me for it, but I was unable to resist - "couldn't risk overheating the brakes, honey!"

I did 52mph down the south side of Sepulveda Pass on my old Centurion at night without lights on. I just went for it and checked my speedometer max speed after. I couldn't believe and somehow still don't. I think all of these tells of fast speeds make me believe it now. It was the first time going down that hill, and I went for it 'balls out'. Never again do I go that fast. I ride on the breaks on the down hill. Even when I go past 30mph, I get kinda freaked out.
The scariest I ever did was 37mph going into Westwood westbound on Wilshire with heavy traffic. I've done it more time then I care to remember. I would going in between cars with the speed of traffic, cars in front of me and cars in back of me, riding as fast as them. It always comes to that moment when I think "if I fall and crash, there is no way the cars behind me will stop in time not to run me over". Fear overcomes me, and then I'm riding uphill in the door zone and its all over. Saying I'll never do this again. Then it comes to the next time ....I'm on Santa Monica and Wilshire, after having to wait more then two minutes for the 720 bus, I say, "this is stupid, I can ride there faster, and save the fare" then it happens again. over and over and over............................

62 mph down an unnamed hill on the city/state line between Plastow, NH, an Haverhill, Ma, on my old Schwinn LeTour. I blew by a cop with a radar gun (which later confirmed my speedometer) at about my highest speed.
I reached the bottom of the hill, where i was waiting for the rest of my group, the cop rolls up and was totally incredulous, saying "I didn't know bikes could go that fast."
He then lectured me about riding safely and drove off. After he left, the rest of my group (which was riding a sane 30 mph down the hill) rolled up not knowing about the cop at all (the road was barely 2 lanes, and twisty as fuck).

I ride a fixed gear and the other day I hit a nice steep hill on the way to work and when I got to work, this is what my cyclocomputer said:
Whack!!! MY computer was strait trippin'! It was more like 33.... I want a refund!

take your wireless computer and go by one of those security alarms that are at clothes stores. You know the ones that set of the plastic tags on the clothes. That or where you have the sensor that opens the automatic doors at retail stores, and see what it does to your computer.

Day 1 ALC - I was on Zuko's specialized and his computer said 49mph which he later states his computer displays 5mph slower than the actual speed.

87 mph when I left my Garmin on when I loaded it on back of the truck. That was the same day I averaged 62 mph.

All the wireless computers I had have been a joke. Sometimes it showed that I was going 30 something miles an hour, and this was on my folder on flat land. I finally decided just to scrape them all and enjoy the day regardless of how fast or slow I was going.

No I did calibrate it correctly. I even used the most accurate way of doing so. which is to measure out the length the wheel traveled to make one complete revolution. The computer some times worked great, other times I wondered wtf????

thats not how you calibrate any ive ever owned. you choose the wheelsize (700x23 for you im assuming?) when you set the date and time.
then you make sure the magnet is in the correct place on your wheel, making sure it lines up against the correct place on the part that attaches to your fork.
then you make sure that last part doesnt wobble around when you hit bumps.

I have been racing for years and the fastest my BICYCLE computer has ever said was 74MPH, 2 years ago at a race called www.everestchallenge.com. There are stretches of downhill you can haul on for minutes without coming out of a full tuck.
74 mph was a full over the wheel tuck and speed building from about 45 out of a corner.
I REALLY WANT TO HEAR HOW YOU GOT TO 81mph.
BIKE? TIRES? WHEEL? AIR PRESSURE? AVERAGE DOWNHILL GRADIENT FOR WHAT DISTANCE COVERED?
I DON'T BELEIVE IT AT ALL!!!!!
I have the experiance to back this up, pro racer for about 4 years.

starting in malibu and riding towards agoura hills. the last hill that you go down before you get to the 101 is where i went the fastest. i dont have a garmin so i cant tell you what the grade of the incline is, but its steep and long.

Been there about 1 million times. I don't recall a stretch anywhere on KANAN valley or beach side you can get average gradient that will create that speed.
Did you have a 55 or 56 front chainring.
You wheels are not even aero. You are not getting speed like that without a full tuck and somewhat aero wheels.

No thanks....no racing for me.
I don't think I've recorded my top speed on a bike. The little plastic clip that connects my bike computer to the handle bar is broken....has been for a long time. I used to try to think I was a fast rider, but not so much anymore. I jettisoned the concept because it is a matter of perspective, and once attained, easy to lose. Maybe, you could go as fast as rbi if you had a skin suit and one of those pointy helmets....I don't know. Hey...remember to bring a tie dyed shirt, or at least some brightly colored clothes to the ride. I guess you would also be in keeping with the theme if you wore natural hemp clothing...or caharrt pants.
I like to do these things:
grow tomatoes.
ride my bike to places I've never been before.
hang out on social rides.
read books in the air conditioning at Barnes and Noble.
Go on bike trips to places like Portland, San Diego, Deep Creek Hotsprings.
My bike needs a new cable and cable housing for the rear brake.

Have you ever been on a nowheeler? Riding nowheeled, you don't have two awkward spinning things at both ends of your bike---wheels just inhibit a true feeling of connection with the bike...like it is an extension of your body. So, try riding nowheeled...it's unlike anything else in the world.

Just to give everyone some perspective, I remember picking up a Velo News at Bud's bike shop several years ago. The cover displayed a cat 1 elite racer all crunched up under his seat and on the drops, flying down a steep decent. The cover line read, in ginormous font, "63 MPH!!!"

I mean, I"m not talking Bonneville here. I'm talking reagular road racing bike on a regular course. But, I don't have a perfect memory, so I could be wrong. I am not naysaying anyone's top speed, either. It's just that some of them are really fast. I've more than wound out my bike at 52 X 12, and I wasn't even close to those speeds. Maybe it's just the Masi slowing me down. hehehe
