Routes to Work
Thread started by Mr. Raymond at 01.26.07 - 3:06 pm

After a brief conversation the other night, I'm interested in finding out everyone's route to work whether you bike, walk, drive, ride the bus, or fly.

POST YOUR ROUTE TO WORK HERE!

Perhaps you'll find a few people you can ride with, or maybe someone can help you begin biking to work. Help out your fellow ridazz. Even if you're not going the exact same route as others, I'm sure slight changes can be made or you can at least have someone to ride with for a majority of your trip to work.

Hyperion near Trader Joe's, down Rowena, left on Fletcher towards NELA, then right on San Fernando and I'm there.

I can also go down Los Feliz then hit San Fernando from there.

I've got a 12 mile ride (one way).

7:30 am I start in El Sereno and take Huntington Drive all the way to Duarte. I come home at 5:30.

Anyone go that way too?

And someone please get Dingo a job.

Nice route Borfo -- I did the reverse of that for about a year (Duarte to downtown LA.) Huntington rocks.

Now I'm doing Koreatown to downtown -- I take James M Wood in, and Olympic home.

Good thread. I would love to see some folks out there.

santa fe > olympic > fig > pico > la brea > venice > grand blvd > circle > main st > colorado > 2nd > wilshire > 5th

or

santa fe > vignes > chavez/sunset > la brea > wilshire > 5th

just depends on my mood....

Cool. Glad to see some participation. You're bound to come up on a few people that go the same way.

How about those of you that aren't biking to work? I'll take a day off to help you get in the swing of things, and so you can have some company on your first ride to work. Let me know.

rchavez80@yahoo.com

I know most of you people have to travel to work, so lets see more of your routes to and from route no matter what type of transportation you're using.

I knew we were neighbors but I never really looked into it. I'm headed out the door but I'll post my route tomorrow.

Did you know that Royer goes all the way through to Vanowen (via Hartland)? You cross over two small bridges that bridge the gaps but it might vary your route at times. I'll post that as well. Zoom in, in hybrid mode and you'll be able to see at least one of the bridges, the other is at the north end of the West HIlls med.center on Royer, but trees obscure the bridge on gmaps.

well to get to school/work: I take spring to about 9th, 9th to about flower, flower to jefferson. I'm all about one way streets.

I count my girlfriends place as a regular commute too, because I do it often enough. that would be main to sunset/cesar chavez. Sunset to Vermont, vermont to franklin, franklin to beachwood, then 42/18 it all the way up. Or the red line to Hollywood/vine if I'm feeling lazy.

I work really weird hours and only have three miles to cover. Combine that with changing my route daily to and from work as traffic signals deem makes posting my route virtually impossible. I could make a map and scribble all over it with my alternate streets...

Besides that, I'm Behind the Orange Curtain, where the percentage of commuter cyclists to cagers is far lower than Lost Angeles.

Right now I carpool with the wife from Tujunga to Pasadena, but this summer I hope to start riding while she (a teacher) is off for the summer.

14 miles, mostly downhill so I shouldn't get too stinky until the return trip, when it won't matter, but how to you guys deal with riding v. work clothes?

Also, do you use a backpack or a saddlebag for things like laptops?

I guess I have a couple of months to figure that out, but practical advice'd be cool.

boyle heights to sherman oaks, so i take the 30 to the redline to the orange line/156 and then back after work. last night though, i got to make the ride back from noho, it was a little twisty and i was following, but i think it was chandler, lankershim, that bike path, california, a left, then los feliz?, then riverside, then san fernando, broadway, spring, chavez, (it'll feature the lariver path next time i would suspect)

To work, MTA bus from Altadena to City of Hope in Duarte - then ride up to Huntington Drive and go east as it turns into Alosta, then down Citrus into downtown Covina. (8.5 mi ride)

Back home, ride up Citrus to Arrow Highway, east on Arrow to Buena Vista, north on Buena Vista to City of Hope in Duarte - jump on the MTA bus back to Altadena. (9 mi ride) I take a different route back home because I hate riding westbound on Huntington over the San Gabriel River in the dark - bad pavement, no lights, a narrow bridge with only a three foot high barrier, and cars blazing beside you at 60 mph. Its okay during the daylight when you can see the pavement.

Bellman,

I ride to work in a different set of clothes, then when I arrive I use the bathroom and change so my work clothes don't get dirty on the way here. Of course, I've got a short ride so the sweat factor isn't a big deal. I know a lot of people that shower at work, but of course that is only an option if showers are available at your job. If not, I suggest bringing your work clothes in panniers, in a bag on your rack, or in a back pack, and taking it easy on your way there so you won't be all sweaty. Some shower-fresh powder could help to if you need to freshen up a bit.

As for your laptop, I think it would be best in your backpack so it doesn't absorb so much shock from the road. Strapping it to your bike rack may jolt it a bit hard.

You should definitely ride to work once summer hits, or get the wife to bike with you to work and leave the car at home. You've already got an advantage over most of us cuz you've got a live-in riding partner.

what are the chances of having a commutazz ride?

what would that ride be?

all the commutazz but one ditch work for the day, and meet up at one commutazz workplace and ride home with them

one lucky person each ride gets to be the person to go to work while the rest ditch to ride with you

too crazy to do in the day? but then again i don't think the turnout would be all that large.

but it might be fun

24+ miles, 2+ hours one way, no showers at work.

boo hoo ;-(....

On the other hand, the 445 picks me up 2 blocks from home and drops me 1 block from work in about 1.25 hours. Could be worse.

I presently work from home so my current ommute is mute, but here's how I used to get some of my previous employers:

Silver Lake to El Segundo:

This past December I had a temp gig at DirecTV and the drive was killing me, taking upwards of 90 minutes or more to go like 20 miles to get home at night. I never got a chance to bike there, but on several occasions I left the driving to the MTA via the No. 4 Sunset Boulevard bus that I'd take from Silver Lake to Hill and 7th Street downtown. Then I'd walk a few blocks to the 7th Street station and get on the Blue Line to the Wimington Avenue stop in Watts where I'd board the westbound Green Line train and get off at the Aviation boulevard station and walk the remaining half-mile.

Encino to Mid-Wilshire:

In May of 1997 I totaled my car and for several months after that alt-commuted via bike, and Metrolink and Red Line.

From my Burbank Boulevard apartment in Encino I'd bike north about 6-7 miles to the Northridge Metrolink station where I'd catch the downtown-bound train to Union Station. From there I'd either bike across or secure my bike up in one of the bike lockers the MTA had available and take the Red Line to Western Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard where I worked a block away.

Encino to the Los Angeles Zoo:

This was something like 12 miles one-way, but it was all bike across the flatlands of the Valley from my Encino apartment east on Burbank into Van Nuys then up to Riverside Drive and shoot that the rest of the way to Victory Boulevard and into Griffith Park.

As an alternate (and waaaay before the Orange Line was born) I could bus it the entire way via the No. 154 all the way to the Burbank Metrolink station where I'd pick up the downtown-bound No. 96 that stopped right in front of the zoo.

Mt. Washington to Brentwood
Thread started by Velomama at 01.28.07 - 12:32 pm

I leave around 8:30am from the comfort of home to work. This is the route I take. ( its 16 or 18 miles one way ) Need to arrive b4 11am.

Marmion Way to Figueroa
Figueroa over the bridge becomes Riverside Dr.
Riverside Dr. to Fletcher
Fletcher to Griffith Park Blvd
Griffith Park Blvd crossover to Hyperion
Hyperion to Fountain
( take 5 minute break )
Fountain into West Hollywood
Fountain to La Cienega
LaCienaga to Franklin
Franklin to Larrabee St.
Larrabee to Santa Monica Blvd
Santa Monica Blvd into Beverly Hills
I sometimes ride through the residential streets, dirt path along Santa Monica Blvd, or the alley which ends after a catholic church on Bedford St. to Elevado
Elevado to Wilshire Blvd
( take a 5 minute break to enjoy the birds in the park. Sometimes I'm entertained by caged commuters dressed to the "T" suffering in miserable traffic. Not the scenic drive I like.
Continue on Wilshire Blvd into Westwood
Wilshire Blvd to San Vicente
San Vicente into Brentwood
San Vicente to Montana
Montana and Bundy and the office hours begin ! W H O A A A A!

O R A L E ! for pedal power! I love LA !

Depending on my boss' mood, I might get to leave early like 4pm. Y E A H, and I'm back on the saddle again. : )

Anyone else commute through Griffith Park via Riverside Dr? My route is roughly:

Los Feliz Blvd to Riverside Dr.
Left into the Park onto Crystal Springs Dr.
Around past the Zoo and onto Zoo Dr.
Zoo Dr. to Forest Lawn
Left on Forest Lawn into Burbank

I ususually leave Los Feliz around 8:30an but can leave earlier or a little later. Return trip around 6 or 6:30p. Sometimes for variety I take the longer route home through the middle of the park (especially when there's a full moon and the coyotes are out :-).

It's a nice easy ride, but super dark at night this time of year, bring a light.

i do a few different things during the the week
but my most comon route is super basic
Start in thai town, ride hollywood east, merge with sunset, then left on e.p. ave. can't be more that 5 miles.

The other day I worked in Santa Monica and rode my bike back on olympic in friday rush hour traffic. It was OK, but needless to say I got bullied a bit in century city.
(anybody have any recomendations for riding between e.hollywood and santa monica?)
